Interview: Interview: Absolute Superman - Jason Aaron

Can you tell us about your vision for Absolute Superman? How does this series stand apart from previous Superman stories? When starting from scratch, so to speak, was it ever overwhelming figuring out what you wanted to use from the vast Superman tapestry? What themes are you most excited to explore with Superman in this series? Are there new facets of his personality or struggles you’re aiming to highlight? The concept of social class is a strong one in the first issue, why was that so important to this character? To be honest, the social class element made me immediately think of Batman, do you think your Superman would get along with Batman? What challenges have you faced in writing Superman (though not for the first time), a character often seen as the ultimate symbol of hope and morality? What would Absolute Superman think of main universe Superman, or vice versa? The first issue seems to suggest there’s some tweaks to Superman’s abilities, or maybe how he charges up. Was there a trial and error process of figuring out this Superman’s power set?Since you’ve been developing this series more or less alongside the Absolute Batman and Wonder Woman, did the development of those series influence your approach or take at all?Is there a panel or page Rafa blew you away? What’s your thoughts on the new Superman logo?

Interview: Ryan North (STAR TREK LOWER DECKS/WARP YOUR OWN WAY out Oct 22, Fantastic Four, The Rise of Emperor Doom)

Ryan, thanks for joining us on the AIPT Comics podcast for the second time! You’re having the nerdiest of years, with Star Trek Lower Decks/Warp Your Own Way out Oct 22nd, the ongoing Lower Decks #1 out November 13 and Fantastic Four cresting into a huge 2025 year, what has been your favorite nerd thing you created this year?STAR TREK LOWER DECKS/WARP YOUR OWN WAY is a choose-your-own adventure! What is the process of plotting something like this? Anything you learned from Hamlet or Romeo & Juliet that opened the way for new experimentation?About how many “storylines” can someone get out of the graphic novel?Maybe this is sacrilege to ask, but do you have a favorite ending for the graphic novel? Is the STAR TREK: LOWER DECKS ongoing series a direct continuation of the animated show, or taking place at a different period?I’ve heard that Heather Antos is basically an encyclopedia of Star Trek lore – how invaluable was it to have her as your editor on this project.Footnotes, you’re one of the best at them…how does it feel to have them return!?Without spoiling anything, Lower Decks #1 touches on a fun part of Trek’s past. Are there any corners of Trek that you haven’t explored in comics that you’d love to?There’s a lot of science in FF, does Star Trek Lower Decks let you stretch your science legs in different ways? You got to visit with the The Fantastic Four: First Steps cast, how long was the visit and how much did you get to see?Do you get a sense they’re sticking to the comics at all?Considering how much science is in your titles, will The Rise of Emperor Doom also be sciencey, or is it all magic all the time? How would the lower decks crew deal with Dr. Doom? Could they withstand his might?

    Rapid Fire Question Round:

Best sandwich? What's one thing you own that you really should throw out?Apples or oranges? What was your first comic?Have you ever asked someone for their autograph? When do you think your style came into its own? What do you think happens when we die?Favorite action movie?Favorite smell?Least favorite smell?Favorite superhero? Most used app on your phone? If you could have dinner with any three characters you’ve created or written, who would they be and why?You get one song to listen to for the rest of your life: what is it?A genre you want to make more comics in?Describe the rest of your life in 5 words?

David, thanks for chatting with us about Creature Commandos! With multiple Count Crowley titles under your belt and a busy spooky season up ahead with even more comics, tell us: how’d you get attached to this project?Jesús Hervás’ art is so pulpy, what is it about his work you dig the most for this series? It’s rude of us to ask, but do you have a favorite monster in the commandos now that you’ve scripted a few issues? This is an eclectic bunch of monsters, were there any monster types you wanted to fit in, but maybe are saving for later? We understand Zatanna will be popping up in this series! Are you a Zatanna fan, and can you tease how she fits into this tale?Gotcha question: what are your feelings on Bauhaus? You have the unique pleasure of BEING a Suicide Squad member, how might you describe the differences between that team and this one?As an actor and writer, do you read your dialogue out loud to get a feel for each character? No spoilers here, but do you have a favorite moment in Creature Commandos and if so, which issue does it take place in?If a reader wanted to brush up on any horror classics for this series - comics or otherwise - would you recommend any?You also have a story coming up in the DC Horror Presents anthology! What can you tell us about that?

Absolute Batman #1 out Oct. 9 - Second Printing October 30

The new suit seems to invoke a bat even more, would you say Absolute Batman is far more bat than man?

Scott, in a recent AMA on reddit you said you were a consultant on the Absolute line, how did that first meeting go and how long ago was it?

You also mentioned you and Nick work in your home office every few weeks, can you explain how that has made the process different, and maybe better?

Not to dig into spoilers, but you said Batman is the “small chaos in the system,” is this a book we can connect to our own world given politics, globalization, and ongoing wars?

Nick, did you have a mood board or listen to any particular music when designing the characters?

Nick, positively loved your work on East of West, would you say you’re bringing any kind of futuristic or sci-fi edge to Absolute Batman?

Does it feel important as far as in what order you introduce rogues in this new take on Batman?

Scott, If your run with Greg Capullo was a post 9/11 world version of Batman, what might be the marker of this Batman historically?

What would Greg Capullo Batman think of Nick Dragotta Batman?

If Absolute Batman was a song what would it be and why?

Michael Walsh, thank you for joining us on the AIPT Comics podcast! You’re very busy at the moment, with Nullhunter, Sacred Damned, and Frankenstein all coming out at the same time, how do you find the time?Nullhunter is a bit different with you teaming up with Gustaffo Vargas, what’s the elevator pitch for this one? There are some incredible visuals in Nullhunter, from large-scale action to future tech. As an artist, how detailed are your scripts when you’re drawing the book vs working with a collaborator like Gustaffo? We know Nullhunter is inspired by the Labors of Hercules, but beyond Greek myth as a guide, do you have a world bible for this version of the future? In some ways Nullhunter reminds me of Dune with a big sweeping government in space, what were some of its inspirations? In Nullhunter, you have a way of stripping exposition to its bare essentials. What’s that process like? The Silver Coin and The Sacred Damned have some gnarly monsters in them. Do you ever find yourself pulling out an old sketchbook and dusting off a design when the right script comes along? We had Pornsak Pichetshote on the show a little while back to tell us about the Horizon Experiment, and we love the concept. How’d you come aboard?Switching gears to Frankenstein: What is it about Universal’s Frankenstein that has made this particular incarnation so enduring? With Frankenstein, you take a unique approach from a child’s perspective, was this always in your pitch, or did it come up organically? Fanboy question incoming: Can we expect more Silver Coin in our future?

To start, I’ve loved your X-Men: From the Ashes Infinity Comics, how does the process of writing this differ from conventional comics? You’ve tackled Omega Red, Phoenix, Cyclops, and Polaris to name a few, with 11 issues under your belt how many more adventures can we expect? Can fans expect to see any connections from your infinity comics to Sentinels?Sentinels was a surprise for me, what’s the elevator pitch for the fans out there? If fans wanted to, should they brush up on Sentinel lore or past stories?Favorite cyborg soldier of all time?We just had Hannah Rose May on and Justin Mason came up--they were actually working on Rogues Gallery before he got the Spider-Punk gig--what’s something about his art that really makes Sentinels shine?Solicits tease a “new” enemy, how do you craft a villain that’s new with so many great ones in the X-Men line, did you go overboard with research, or did it just come to you?If Sentinels’ first story arc was a song, what would it be and why?Paranoid Android RadioheadThe November 2023 solicits just came out and it appears Onslaught is on the cover, care to comment, SIR?!You’re a busy guy, Alex, do you have any other projects you’d like to plug today?

Interview: Spencer Ackerman talks his new Iron Man kicking off October 23rd!

Spencer Ackerman, thank you for joining us on the AIPT comics podcast! To start, you’re a Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist, could you tell the audience a little about yourself, and how you got into comics? There’s a lot of “new” with this series, including a new Iron Man armor, a new Iron Monger, was your original pitch to Marvel new new new, or did that come later?I gotta say, JULIUS OHTA has been crushing it of late, especially on his Hellverine series. From an artistic perspective, what are you and Ohta going for? From the first cover reveal I’m getting a steampunk vibe, am I way off?Roxxon and A.I.M. are teaming up, how would you say these evil corps are the same and different? We were big fans of WALLER VS. Zack Kaplan, thank you for guesting on the AIPT comics podcast! To start, The Dark empty Void is out September 11 and it’s your first horror, did you approach this any differently than you’ve done with previous projects? There’s psychology in this series, how much research went into this, and do you tend to research a lot for your projects? It’s obviously also about black holes, when you’re crafting stories like this do you do research on other black hole tales? Do you ever wake up and go “that’s a great idea… has someone possibly already done it?”Shifting gears to Midnight Shadows, a story in collaboration with The Midnight band, themes in this work include escapism and nostalgia, what did the first outline of this look like? Tell us about your collaboration process with the band.Did you find yourself listening to the music when scripting?Did you ever find yourself writing and a song would come on, then suddenly you’d have to change gears in the story? The art team is incredible (Stephen Thompson, Jahnoy Lindsay, Elisabetta D'Amico) with clear 80s inspirations, anything in the book that blew your expectations away?Do you see this OGN as a standalone story, or something that could continue?Anything else you’d like to plug today?

Interview: Pornsak Pichetshote/The Horizon Experiment - The Horizon Experiment: The Manchurian #1 - FOC September 2nd; September 25, 2024

It’s always exciting to have you on Pornsak, but even more so when there’s something new going on in comics we haven’t seen before. Can you tell our listeners what the Horizon Experiment is all about? We understand it started over the debate of Idris Elba as James Bond. Tell us a bit about that.
    - Do you feel that dream movie would still disappoint? Is it inherently impossible for an established IP to take those kind of risks?Something interesting about this project is the notion that it’s “designed to act as pilots for follow-up books if sales merit.” Do you have a number in mind for a series to flourish from a one-shot, and if one of the one-shots does merit a series how will you let fans know?Tell us about your collaboration process with co-editor Will Dennis. Were there any pitches you got but they didn’t make the cut for this first five?Tell us about working with the Dodsons and Jeff Powell on The Manchurian. We’d be remiss not to ask about Absolute Power Task Force VII #4, with a focus on Batman super robot Failsafe! This series has a different creative team each issue, and you’re teaming with Claire Roe on this one, was DC actively accepting pitches for this or did it come about organically?Anything else you’d like to plug today?

Interview: Juni Ba, TMNT: Nightwatcher out AUG 14TH, 2024

Juni Ba, you’re known for so much incredible work, from Monkey Meat, to The Unlikely Story of Felix and Macabber, to The Boy Wonder, incredible cover art, and now TMNT Nightwatcher…thank you for guesting on the AIPT comics podcast! To start, you’ve been building up a nice resume of TMNT work from covers to Armageddon game, the annual issue in 2022… what made TMNT Nightwatcher the right project to launch with IDW?With a few issues under your belt I’m sure, how has it been working with Fero Pe?If you had a mutation, what animal would you want to be?I got a Dark Knight Returns vibe from the first issue, possibly due to the check-in with residents. Did you have any inspirations when scripting this series? When writing a vigilante hero, are you looking to capture a certain level of brutality vs heroism?Speaking of vigilantes, how would you say Nightwatcher and The Boy Wonder are different or the same?Monkey Meat, might we see more of that series? It’d be crime not to mention the incredible The Unlikely Story of Felix and Macabber, which your collaborator on that Hassan Otsmane-Elhaou just won an Eisner! Could you tell TMNT or Robin fans why they must pick this one up?Do you find there’s a discovery of characters even when you have a plan? For instance, did you find you understood Robin better once you got a few issues under your belt, or for that matter Nightwatcher?

    Rapid Fire Question Round:

Best sandwich? What's one thing you own that you really should throw out?Apples or oranges? What is the scariest animal?Have you ever asked someone for their autograph? What do you think happens when we die?Favorite action movie?Favorite smell?Least favorite smell?Flat or sparkling? Most used app on your phone? If you could have dinner with any three characters you’ve drawn or written before, who would they be and why?You get one song to listen to for the rest of your life: what is it?What number am I thinking of?Describe the rest of your life in 5 words?

When you were last here you teased more would come, and now JUSTICE WARRIORS: VOTE HARDER comes out in September. Congrats! Jordan Morris, thank you for being our guest on the AIPT Comics podcast for the second time!Thank you for continuing the tradition of appearing on our show the day after a Doughboys appearance! Tell our listeners, why’s Youth Group so awesome?Specter Inspectors is one of my favorite comics from the last few years. How’d you link up with Bowen McCurdy?Did you ever do youth ministry? This felt so specific in so many ways. One of the things I love is that this book embraces the idea that there’s no wrong way to embrace spirituality. Was that an important message for you? And how long did it take to come to that, if I can get a little personal? There’s specific Christian and Wiccann weaponry introduced. How’d you come about these and was there anything left on the cutting room floor? Do you have spreadsheets for the rules?A lot of these characters feel deeply realized. Were any based on people you or Bowen McCurdy knew growing up?For a deeply Christian person nervous about picking up Youth Group, how might you pitch this book to them? What contemporary pop songs would be converted into Christian anthems if this book were set today?I feel like some of the characters are learning to ask questions for the first time, and it’s difficult. Was this always a part of the story from the beginning, or something you found as you built out these characters? What comics are you reading currently?

Kyle Higgens, thanks you for joining us on the AIPT Comics podcast! C.O.W.L. was your firs creator-owned at Image, but since that launched you’ve got the Massive-verse roaring, how have you changed working on projects since C.O.W.L. was first launched? Its been 9 years since you’ve explored the world of COWL with Alec Siegel and Rod Reis, why was now the right time to launch COWL 1964?I feel like COWL is a compelling look at the politics of superheroes, under the guise of the 60s, have the current politics of today influenced this upcoming series?Back when COWL vol. 1 came out Entertainment Weekly said it was “"Mad Men meets Heroes in '60s Chicago." With those references dated and COWL 1964 a different project, how might you describe the upcoming series using TV references? For a reader who may think the 60s isn’t their bag, how might you pitch COWL 1964 to them? You’ve collaborated with a lot of great writers and artists, including Mat Groom, Joe Clark and now Bear McCreary & Kid Cudi. Any tips for working with a co-writer?I know you love to play around with different media formats for the Massiveverse, and that's continuing with the audiobook version of Radiant Black. What made an audiobook the best format?

Interview: Gillen Caspar - The Power Fantasy

There’s a lot of moving parts to The Power Fantasy, when did the bud of the story come to you and what was that bud? You’re both no slouches in creating worlds and characters whole cloth, do you find there’s a good method to the madness, or is it truly chaotic in creating a world, characters, plot etc?I understand The first extranormal individuals appeared in 1945, was this a choice so the new world history was post WW2, or does WW2 have some significance on the story? Caspar your work is incredible on this first issue. Is there a character that was your favorite to design? The idea of ethics is a strong theme after reading the first issue, did you find yourselves poking in old books on ethics and philosophy when delving into the points of view of these characters? If you could have a superpower of one of the characters in this book, what would it be and why?If The Power Fantasy was a song what would it be and why?Prince 1999; I understand Rian Hughes is involved with art as well, making each issue a more complex beast. Would you call his inclusion part of a “data pages” approach? Peter Cannon was a masterwork in my opinion, and also a great meta narrative on comics. Are you continuing that trend or other themes with the power fantasy?
