This course provides students with a broad scientific education. The basic concepts of the biological sciences, biochemistry, cell biology, immunology, microbiology and molecular biology are emphasised. Knowledge of environmental science, analytical techniques, quality management and bioprocessing are seen as key requirements and these disciplines are studied in detail.

This programme was developed in conjunction with the Irish Institute of Medical Herbalists (IIMH) in order to enable students to study all aspects of herbs and other related medicinal plants. It covers a wide range of subjects, enabling students to appreciate the history and philosophy inherent in the cultural use of herbs.
