  • Welcome back to The Success Myth Diaries. Today's guest is Tim Clare, performance poet, author of two fantasy novels and nonfiction books including WE CAN'T ALL BE ASTRONAUTS, which won Best Biography/Memoir at the East Anglian Book Awards. His latest book COWARD a brilliant book about why we get anxious and what we can do about it (one of my favourite books on anxiety). His podcast Death Of 1000 Cuts, a podcast for readers, writers, and anyone who fancies being a little bit happier while they do those things. In this episode we discuss his three success myths around anxiety, achievement and the myth of the finish line. Hope you enjoy.

  • To accompany the launch of my new book, I have interviewed some of my favourite thinkers on the topic of success, failure and creativity — and the most common success myths. Today’s guest is British actor Sian Clifford, probably best known for playing Claire in Fleabag (the toilet scene! The hair scene! The “the only person I'd run through an airport for is you” line! *chefs kiss*) I have re-watched both seasons of Fleabag so many times and it is Sian who I am totally mesmerised by the most each time. She is also a treasured friend of mine (we’ve seen each other through a lot) and I was so lucky that she even agreed to read the audiobook for my first novel Olive, in the middle of a lockdown, no less!) I am a fan of her work on screen but it’s her writing that also has me feverishly wanting more. I am loving her creative love affair with her Substack, rebooting her project Still Space (first born back in 2015) where she communicates passionately and poetically about culture, art, books, stillness and creativity. I encourage you to have a read. Here Sian discusses her three success myths: the ‘then and when’ theory, the myth of busyness and the myth of perfectionism. Also, how winning a BAFTA doesn’t actually mean you’re on Cloud 9 forever — life and pressures continue on in other ways — aka the arrival myth, which she generously shares with us.

  • Welcome to the Success Myth Diaries! A brand new mini-series to accompany my new book The Success Myth: Letting Go Of Having It All which is out TODAY. My book unpicks the 8 success myths, from happiness to money to productivity to celebrity to the idea of ‘arriving’, looking at all the different ways traditional success is marketed to us and how it can take us off track to what really makes us personally fulfilled. To celebrate I am interviewing a selection of people I admire about what success means to them, and I’ve asked them to come with their three ‘success myths’ that we will unpick together.

Today's guest is Chelsea Fagan, a writer, home cook, and the founder of The Financial Diet, and author of debut novel A Perfect Vintage. She is currently on the road from “absolutely terrible with money” to “pretty good with money" and in this episode we talk about Chelsea's three success myths: Myth #1: Endless money will make you happy / Myth #2: Traditional publishing is the only way to feel successful / Myth #3 The four-day week doesn’t work.

Since this episode aired, Bella’s novel How To Kill Your Family has become a UK bestseller, topping the charts for months, if you haven’t read it already it’s a great holiday read, although potentially awkward if holidaying with your family. Hope you enjoy this trip down memory lane with Bella.

  • Hello - this is a replay episode with the incredible Ava Duvernay. In 2016 she was named one of Oprah Winfrey's SuperSoul 100 visionaries, and in 2017 she became the first Black woman nominated for an Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature, for her film 13th. This episode was recorded in 2018, around the time the film A Wrinkle in Time came out (starring a mega cast of Oprah, Mindy Kaling and Reese Witherspoon) which she directed. We chatted about her career, the film and how she changed careers later in the life and how there is no rush when it comes to achieving your creative dreams. I hope you love this episode as much as I do.

  • My guest today is the brilliant author Holly Bourne (recorded in 2021) who started her writing career as a news journalist, where she was nominated for Best Print Journalist of the Year. She then spent six years working as an editor, a relationship advisor, and general 'agony aunt' for a youth charity - helping young people with their relationships and mental health. (TW: This episode discusses rape and sexual assault.)

Inspired by what she saw helping young people, she started writing teen fiction, including the best-selling award-winning 'Spinster Club' series which helps educate teenagers about feminism. When she turned 30, Holly wrote her first adult novel How Do You Like Me Now?, examining the intensified pressures on women once they hit that landmark age, and the book became a Sunday Times bestseller. She now has her second adult fiction book out called Pretending.

In one review of Pretending a reader says: "the book deals with trauma and sexual violence, there is also heart and humour throughout the pages". I feel like this sums up a lot of Holly's work - dealing with tough subjects through a lighter touch that makes her stories feel more accessible and real.

I hope you enjoy this episode and if you did please leave a lovely rating or review.

  • Today's guest (recorded back in 2020) is the brilliant Caitlin Moran! Award-winning columnist, author, scriptwriter. She is the eldest of eight children, grew up in Wolverhampton and she published her first novel at the age of 16. She then became a columnist at The Times aged 18 and has gone on to be named Columnist of the Year six times. Her popular novel How to Build a Girl is now a movie with Beanie Feldstein playing her. She is perhaps most known for her multi-award-winning bestseller How to Be a Woman which has now been published in 28 countries and won the British Book Awards’ Book of the Year 2011. I read How To Be a Woman when I was 21, and like most people it had a profound effect on me and was my first introduction to the world of feminism. Now she has released a follow up book, ten years later, called More Than A Woman, it was so great getting to talk to her about everything thats gone on since HTBAW came out. We talk about the book, why she wrote it, helping a loved one who is struggling and of course some writing tips. Really enjoyed this chat - and hope you do too! If you enjoyed please feel free to leave a review. :) Thank you! xo

  • Today’s guest (recorded back in 2021) is with the amazing Laura Mucha, an ex-lawyer, author, award-winning poet, and speaker. Her first book, Love Factually / We Need to Talk About Love is the result of ten years of interviews with hundreds of strangers aged 8-95 years old across every continent, and it is fascinating. The Guardian describes her as “a fantastic nosy parker”. She is such a talented writer and researcher and I think you’ll fall in love with her like I did when you hear this episode. Her debut poetry collection, Dear Ugly Sisters is out now and her debut picture book, Rita’s Rabbit is out in 2021, so keep your eye out for that!
