About Dr. Batiste
Dr. Columbus D. Batiste is a board-certified Interventional Cardiologist and Regional Chief of Cardiology for Southern California Permanente Medical Group. In 2010, Dr. Batiste sought to break-the-cycle of prescriptions and procedures as the sole management of chronic disease and began promoting a long-term solution for his patients through nutrition, stress reduction, and exercise. In 2016 Dr. Batiste led a group that collaborated with Samsung Technologies and developed a virtual cardiac rehabilitation program utilizing a Samsung wearable. Since its launch the program, which applies the principles of lifestyle, has treated over 15,000 patients. Understanding that the health of an individual is uniquely tied to their community, Dr. Batiste collaborated on the formation of a non-profit organization called the Healthy Heart Nation. The mission of Healthy Heart Nation is to improve the health of the community by narrowing disparities in education, business, justice, and ultimately health otherwise described as social determinants of health. Dr. Batiste is a passionate advocate for lifestyle lecturing across the nation and internationally on the power of plant based nutrition. His anticipated first book entitled SELFish: A Cardiologist Cure to A Stressed and Broken Heart is expected in the spring of 2023. Bonnetta Adeeb is the founder & president of STEAM ONWARD, Inc, a non-profit 501(c3) organization in southern Maryland, as well as the projects: Ujamaa Cooperative Farming Alliance (UCFA) and Ujamaa Seeds. UCFA is a collective of emergent and seasoned growers who cultivate heirloom seeds and grow culturally relevant plants for food, healing, and textiles. Ujamaa recognizes the need for increased diversity in farming and the seed industry, and the need to provide more opportunities and support for growers from historically oppressed and marginalized communities. To this end the UCFA is working to bridge the gap between prospective growers and seed companies. In addition, she works with the Cooperative Gardens Commission to distribute free heirloom seeds to communities in need serving 300 seed hubs nationally. January 12, saw the launch of a new Black Indigenous led project. Ujamaa Seeds is and online store cultivating and distributing culturally important seeds to increase diversity in the seed industry. Providenza Rocco, JD MSW, MBE is committed to highlighting the systemic injustices that have prevented thousands from freely enjoying healthy food option. Enza has made a life-long commitment as an ally to learn accurate history and work to identify, dismantle, and decolonize systems of oppression that continue to devalue and limit opportunities for growth in dense, disparate, and urban places like North Philadelphia. During the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, when food insecurity peaked as supply chains were stressed, Enza’s training as a social worker enabled her to address nutritional scarcity and connect individuals in Philadelphia and in counties surrounding Philadelphia with food and other life-sustaining supplies including baby formula, dog food, and diapers. Since 2017, Enza has been working with Farm to Families, a food insecurity program that brings organic, local fruit and vegetables to North Philly residents at low- or no-cost. About Dr. Mulpuri
Dr. Lakshman (Lucky) Mulpuri graduated from the University of Michigan and Wayne State University's School of Medicine. He has served as managing director for the 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization Auntie Na’s Village in Detroit, President of the Plant-Based Nutrition Group (PBNG), and is currently the Chief Executive of PlantsNourish. He has been intimately involved in policy initiatives spanning the local, state and federal levels particularly focused on communities of color. He also developed and implemented the first-ever mandatory plant-based medical curriculum for all 300 1st year medical students at Wayne State. Dr. Mulpuri's work has been featured in VegNews, Forks Over Knives, and numerous newspapers and television stations. As a community activist and a doctor, he is a strong proponent of the benefits whole-food plant-based nutrition has for the community and the patients he serves.

About Dr. Christina Schiavoni, PhD
Christina M. Schiavoni is Grassroots International’s Senior Communications Coordinator. A longtime food sovereignty activist, she was involved in the founding of the US Food Sovereignty Alliance and the Food Sovereignty Prize and the establishment of the Civil Society and Indigenous People’s Mechanism of the United Nations Committee on World Food Security. She has worked in partnership with social movements across the globe. She holds masters and PhD degrees from the International Institute of Social Studies in the Netherlands. Her research, based in Venezuela, focused on co-generation of knowledge by and for social movements. Passionate about the intersection of communications and movement-building, she is excited to contribute to Grassroots International in this area.

Jessica Carter is a vegan recipe developer and wellness educator on a mission to make plant-based eating more accessible for everyone. She is Director of Programming at Afro-Vegan Society, where she creates, curates, and coordinates digital workshops and resources that highlight how plant-based living can improve the health, environment and communities of people of African descent. She created her plant-powered brand, Love Vegan Soul, to explore global flavors, ingredients, and plant-based traditions. Jessica creates simple and delicious vegan dishes, recipe videos, and conducts cooking demos and wellness workshops across the country - virtually and in-person - to help people make more sustainable and nourishing food and lifestyle choices. Her recipes have been featured on FOX45 Baltimore, Let’s Talk Live, and Good Morning Washington.
She received her Bachelor's Degree in African American Studies from Ohio University in 2009 and her Plant-Based Nutrition Certificate in March 2019 through the T. Colin Campbell Center for Nutrition Studies.

ABOUT THE ECONOMICS OF SUSTAINABLE FOOD
The Economics of Sustainable Food is a new Island Press book edited by economist Nicoletta Batini.
Producing food industrially like we do today causes tremendous global economic losses in terms of malnutrition, diseases, and environmental degradation. But because the food industry does not bear those costs and the price tag for these losses does not show up at the grocery store, it is too often ignored by economists and policymakers.
The Economics of Sustainable Food details the true cost of food for people and the planet. It illustrates how to transform our broken system, alleviating its severe financial and human burden. The key is smart macroeconomic policy that moves us toward methods that protect the environment like regenerative land and sea farming, low-impact urban farming, and alternative protein farming, and toward healthy diets. The book’s multidisciplinary team of authors lay out detailed fiscal and trade policies, as well as structural reforms, to achieve those goals. Visit the book's webpage for additional info.
ABOUT NICOLETTA BATININicoletta Batini is an Italian economist, notable as a scholar of innovative monetary and fiscal policy practices. She pioneered work on the dangers of fiscal austerity and on how to curb debt successfully during financial deleveraging. Prior to the IMF, she was Advisor of the Bank of England’s Monetary Policy Committee, Professor of Economics at the University of Surrey, and Director of the International Economics and Policy Office of the Treasury in Italy. She has handled extensive consultancy roles internationally. She holds a Ph.D. in international finance (Scuola Superiore S. Anna) and a Ph.D. in monetary economics.

Interview with Marvin Hayes, Founder & Director, Baltimore Compost Collective
ABOUT MARVIN HAYESMarvin Hayes has been a youth educator and mentor for over 20 years. His professional experiences include running recreation programming, alternate education youth consoling, mediation services, and youth workforce development. He has a patience and a presence with the youth that cannot be taught in a classroom but has been cultivated by his lifetime of experience. Recently Marvin has been the leader of a community- based food scrap collection service, Baltimore Compost Collective and composting service as a start-up for local job creation. Hiring underemployed area youth, Marvin has helped grow the idea into a service that collects over a quarter ton of food scraps each week to turn into nutrient rich soil for the new growth.

ABOUT LORIKIM ALEXANDER
Originally from Kingston, Jamaica, LoriKim Alexander has dedicated her life to working for social and environmental justice, specifically organizing around justice for LGBTQIA+ Black, Brown and Indigenous Communities. LoriKim’s work in anthropology and as a trained biologist has facilitated her in centering initiatives against environmental racism and for the implementation of environmental education for People of Color around Indigenous ecological knowledge and decolonialism through veganism for the past 25+ years.
Having lived in different parts of the US for three decades, LoriKim now resides in NYC where she continues her work as a facilitator and organizer in an effort to ensure the creation of spaces that center the most marginalized. As a core organizer at Black VegFest, LoriKim supports the work through grant writing, copy writing, project management, speaking, and teaching.

LeeAnn Morrissette is the Communications & Culture Coordinator for The National Black Food and Justice Alliance. LeeAnn is an award-winning filmmaker, nationally published photographer and writer based in Atlanta, GA. Her articles have been featured on Good Food Jobs, Raw on Wheels, Blavity, & Black Girl In Om. Her most recent work, With These Hands presented by SAAFON is an intimate visual telling of the works and lives of 6 Black farmers from around the deep southeastern states showcasing how Black agrarianism is revitalizing our ecosystem, building community and reconnecting people of the Black diaspora with our history. She is committed to documenting & amplifying the stories of Black people reclaiming what it means to live well and free from the wounds of generational land-based trauma.

ABOUT AMY VAN SAUNAmy is a Senior Attorney in the Center for Food Safety's Portland, Oregon office. As part of CFS's legal team, Amy practices environmental and administrative law to defend farmers, communities, and the environment from industrial animal factories, aquaculture, genetically engineered crops and animals, and the overuse of toxic pesticides, especially in the Pacific Northwest. Amy also works to protect the integrity of organic standards and ensure the transparent labeling of genetically engineered foods. A 2011 graduate of Lewis & Clark Law School, Amy has focused her legal education and career on public interest, environmental and food law, earning a certificate in Environmental and Natural Resources Law. Prior to joining CFS, Amy served as a volunteer attorney with Earthjustice working on animal factories on the East Coast, and then litigated complex environmental insurance cases at a law firm in Manhattan. Amy is admitted to the bar in Oregon and New York.

ABOUT OUR GUEST:
Malik Kenyatta Yakini is an activist and educator who is committed to freedom and justice for African people in particular and humanity in general. Yakini is a co-founder and the Executive Director of the Detroit Black Community Food Security Network, which operates a seven-acre farm in Detroit and spearheaded efforts to establish the Detroit Food Policy Council, which he chaired from December 2009 - May 2012. He served as a member of the Michigan Food Policy Council from 2008 - 2010. From 2011 - 2013 he served on the steering committee of Uprooting Racism Planting Justice. He is a co-founder of the National Black Food and Justice Alliance.
From 1990 - 2011 he served as Executive Director of Nsoroma Institute Public School Academy, one of Detroit's leading African-centered schools. In 2006 he was honored as "Administrator of the Year" by the Michigan Association of Public School Academies. He served as a member of the Board of Directors of Timbuktu Academy of Science and Technology from 2004 - 2011. He is C.E.O. of Black Star Educational Management.
He is dedicated to working to identify and alleviate the impact of racism and white privilege on the food system. He has an intense interest in contributing to the development of an international food sovereignty movement that embraces Blacks farmers in the Americas, the Caribbean and Africa. He views the "good food revolution" as part of the larger movement for freedom, justice and equality.
Yakini has presented at numerous local community meetings and national conferences on creating a racially just food system and implementing community food sovereignty practices. In 2017 and 2018 he co-led the course “Food Literacy for All” at the University of Michigan. He is featured in the book "Blacks Living Green," and the movies "Urban Roots" and “Tomorrow”. He has appeared on the nationally televised Tavis Smiley Show and Anthony Bourdain: Parts Unknown. He served as an Institute for Agriculture and Trade Policy "Food and Community Fellow" from 2011- 2013, and a Business Alliance for Living Local Economies (BALLE) Localist Fellow from 2014 - 2015.He is the recipient of numerous awards including the prestigious James Beard Leadership Award. He holds a B.A. degree in Broadcasting from Eastern Michigan University.
Yakini is a musician who plays guitar, bass and dundun drums. He currently leads the Detroit-based band Mollywop! He has traveled to Ghana, Mali, Senegal, Gambia, Cote d'Ivoire, Jamaica, Italy, France, Spain and the U.S. Virgin Islands. He is the father of three and the grandfather of one. He is a vegan and an avid organic grower.
