A joint escape very early in the war, they spent a month trying to steal a boat to cross the channel before giving up and heading south through the recently occupied France, where they caught a boat to Oran, taking the long way round to safety.

Sgt Cyril Rofe tried to escape from pretty every one of the fifteen POW camps in which he was held, and succeeded more than once without getting home. However, when he did eventually escape, he was to join the Polish partisans before making his way across one of the bloodiest fronts of the war to reach safety.

A repeated escaper, who even managed to get married in occupied Europe while escaping, Jones eventually managed to get away from a working camp. Making rapid progress, he made his way onto a Swedish ship, reaching Stockholm less than a week after his final escape.

A merchant sailor, Bird is captured in the Pacific Ocean but imprisoned in Marlag und Milag Nord, the POW camp in Germany for sailors. Escaping to a nearby dockyards, Bird spends more time in the pub than escaping, before eventually stowing away on a ship bound for Sweden, where he was to stay for some time before returning to the UK.

You might have heard of Sgt Pepper, but probably not of his wartime prisoner-of-war escape! Escaping from a working camp attached to the largest POW camp of the war, he chose to remain in Munich for two years, working on behalf of an underground anti-Nazi movement, operating in the birthplace of Nazism. A truly remarkable escape story!

Escaping from Schubin, Sgt. PT Wareing had spent some time in Germany before the war as a member of the German Alpine Club, an experience which would help him in his escape to Sweden, via Danzig.
