Even after the devastating 1977 plane crash that killed Ronnie Van Zant and other original Lynyrd Skynyrd members, the song's popularity continued skyrocketing. Since its creation over 50 years ago, "Freebird" has become firmly woven into American culture's musical fabric, never fading from ubiquity on classic rock radio.
