In EPISODE 182 OF GROWING OLDER LIVING YOUNGER, Dr. Thomas Weimbs and Dr. Gillian Lockitch discuss the prevalence and management of chronic kidney disease (CKD), which affects one in seven adults in the U.S. Dr. Weimbs highlights the importance of diet and lifestyle in managing CKD, particularly through ketogenic metabolic therapy. He explains that ketosis, induced by a low-carbohydrate diet, can slow the progression of polycystic kidney disease (PKD) by reducing inflammation and improving kidney function. Dr. Weimbs describes the Ren-Nu program, a three-month nutrition and lifestyle intervention for kidney disease patients, which has shown significant improvements in kidney function and pain reduction for many participants. Whether you’re affected by kidney disease, have a family history, or are simply interested in how nutrition and epigenetic strategies can support healthy aging, this episode will provide invaluable insights.
Thomas Weimbs PhD is a leading expert in kidney disease research. He is a professor at the University of California in Santa Barbara (UCSB) where he directs a research laboratory focused on polycystic kidney disease. He received his doctoral degree from the University of Cologne, Germany, and then conducted postdoctoral research at the University of California in San Francisco. In 1999, as an assistant professor, he started his first independent research laboratory at the Lerner Research Institute of the Cleveland Clinic. There, his research on polycystic kidney disease began with the support of a local family affected by PKD and whose family foundation still supports PKD research in Dr. Weimbs’ lab today. In 2005, Dr. Weimbs moved his laboratory back to California to join the Department of Molecular, Cellular, and Developmental Biology at UCSB. The laboratory studies molecular mechanisms underlying PKD with an emphasis towards developing new therapies. Recent research has led to the discovery that dietary interventions and natural metabolites strongly slow PKD progression in animal models. This led to the launch of Santa Barbara Nutrients with the goal to make these approaches available for the nutritional management of PKD.

In EPISODE 169 OF GROWING OLDER LIVING YOUNGER, I again talk with Jennifer Powers PhD, co-author with Luke Comer, of the newly released book, On the Origin of Being: Understanding the Science of Evolution to Enhance your Quality of Life. We explore foundational areas in which evolutionary mismatch between humans and modern society may lead to various diseases and pathologies. In Part 1 we focussed on the importance of accommodating our sleep and nutrition lifestyles in the context of contemporary life, while respecting our ancestral blue print. In this episode, Part 2, we explore the ancient balance between work and rest in the hunter-gatherer lifestyle, realizing that it is challenging to balance productivity and well-being in the modern workplace with the need to reconnect with nature for personal well-being. We acknowledged the evolving science on climate change and the need to balance technological advancements with preserving the natural environment.
Jenny Powers is a mom, a writer, a scientist and an athlete from Colorado. Jenny's PhD is in immunology, but she left academia to be a mom and to pursue a writing career. Up to that point, she had only written scientific journal articles and fiction for middle grade children. The opportunity to research and write on the origin of being with Luke Comer, allowed her scientific training and passion for writing to come together harmoniously.Episode Timeline

In EPISODE 168 OF GROWING OLDER LIVING YOUNGER I talk with Jennifer Powers PhD, co-author with Luke Comer, of the newly released book, On the Origin of Being: Understanding the Science of Evolution to Enhance your Quality of Life. I found this book to be both a fascinating and captivating read, and an intensively researched and reference text. So the overall thesis of the book is that the environment that we live in today is radically different from the one in which we evolved. And the agricultural revolution when we stopped being hunter gatherers, and later the Industrial Revolution, exponentially accelerated the rate of change in our lifestyles. It takes a immeasurably long time for the evolutionary process to occur in the human body and we have not had the time for our bodies to genetically adjust to our environment. This evolutionary mismatch is a key factor in many of the disorders of modern life.
Jenny Powers is a mom, a writer, a scientist and an athlete from Colorado. Jenny's PhD is in immunology, but she left academia to be a mom and to pursue a writing career. Up to that point, she had only written scientific journal articles and fiction for middle grade children. In EPISODE 164 OF GROWING OLDER LIVING YOUNGER with Dr. Samantha Wellapilli, we discuss the limitations of conventional medicine in addressing mental health issues and the need for a more comprehensive approach incorporating spiritual practices and connection with community. We explore the intersections of personal responsibility, spirituality, stress eating, and healthy habits, highlighting the connection between stress, sleep and habits, and the importance of making conscious choices for positive changes in overall health. Acknowledging the dual nature of alcohol consumption, we discuss how self-awareness, mindfulness, and responsible consumption can mitigate negative impacts on the body and mind. Dr. Wellapilli suggests we undertake a transformative journey of reclaiming our higher powersin order to shift from human “doings’ to human ‘beings’. We do this by breaking free of cycles of overthinking, worrying and feeling overwhelmed by all the things we believe we should be doing. And instead nurturing our spiritual health, and tapping into the deeper wisdom of the soul or higher mind.
Dr. Sam left her thriving career as a family doctor in London, because she experienced the pain of living according to the expectation of others, and working in a conventional system that did not allow for the vital spiritual element of each person to be honoured. She spent time traveling and studying in Asia, and the Americas. With support from incredible teachers, she found her mission to help others release their self doubt and old patterns to find their own inner strength and healing. Dr. Sam is an inspiring mentor, who has worked with leading health professionals, corporate groups, and high flying women around the globe. Honing skills through the life and soul medicine methodology, she helps women release old patterns of self doubt to find their spark again.
