Here we are coming to the end of 2022! Like what the heck? How has this even happened? This year has been a flash, I know we say that every year, but seriously this year has FLOWN BY!
Today's episode is a quick thank you message from me to round out the year. I had planned to release a whole episode about a specific topic but after listening back to the recording and re-watching the video I wasn't happy with either of them and sat there thinking to myself "What are you even talking about here?" hahaha. So, that episode got scrapped and I took the opportunity to record a thank you episode for you all as 2022 has been a huge year for me as The Drumming Barista and in my personal life as Sean.2022 has seen the launch of the Home Barista Podcast, The Drumming Barista on YouTube, and Being invited to fly to Auckland to be a judge at the New Zealand Aeropress Champs, Hitting 2000 followers on Instagram, connecting with so many new coffee and alcohol brands, food brands, international coffee content creators and welcoming so many new people and faces into The Drumming Barista global community. It’s been busy that’s for sure. But, I wouldn't want it any other way.

I hope you are all doing super well. I am so excited (as always) to be back behind the microphone and to be bringing you a new episode of Coffee Break here on the Home Barista Podcast.
Today's episode is one that has taken far too long for me to create and for that, I apologise but Hey, here we are. Better late than never that's for sure. I am talking about how I, The Drumming Barista have trained my palate over the 6 - 7 years that I have taken coffee and being a home barista more seriously than it just being a hobby. As mentioned in the podcast this is a question that I get asked so often and to be honest, I have forgotten how many times I have been asked.
I believe that this episode is one to listen to a couple of times as I share a lot of information on a lot of different aspects of how I have trained my palate and it may be a little overwhelming and or hard to take in the first time round of listening. So, I would encourage you to save or bookmark this episode so that you can keep coming back to it. I also, encourage you to have a notepad and or a note open on your phone, tablet or computer that you can use to take notes when I share my top 5 points for this topic and how once again I have trained my palate to be at the place it is today.

Today’s episode is a New Zealand exclusive as I was the first person privileged to sit down with the 2022 New Zealand Barista Champion - Hanna Teramoto to catch up and talk about her coffee journey of 15 years and how that has led her to be a 2 x NZ Barista Champion.
This conversation with Hanna was so incredible. Her passion for coffee, the industry, and for making the world know that being a career barista is valid, life-giving and a well-respected job is so infectious. Just going to come clean, ever since we have had this conversation it has made me miss being behind the bar so badly.
Hanna’s experience of competing in the barista championships has been nothing short of amazing and full of excitement and that excitement just flows out of her no matter where she is and who she is speaking to. You will hear me say within the podcast that she has inspired me to think about competing in the 2023 barista champs. Don’t hold me to it, but never say never right?
My hope for all of you (no matter if you are a home barista or professional barista) is that you are thinking about how you can take your skill level and love for coffee to another level. For those of you listening who don’t work within the coffee industry but do enjoy a barista-made coffee, my hope is that through this conversation you have been able to gain a deeper understanding of what it is to be a career barista and I hope that the next time you visit your local cafe you fist bump your barista and say thank you.

I hope you are all doing super well. I am so excited to bring you a new episode and the beginning of a new series here on the Home Barista Podcast.
Within this series, I will be sitting down with Cafe Owners to talk about the future of the Hospitality and Coffee Industry. This topic for the podcast has arisen at a great time as New Zealand has reopened its international borders which means more people can visit New Zealand and experience Kiwi Hospitality and Coffee Culture and bring their experiences and culture to us. It also means that Kiwis can leave New Zealand to visit other countries to gain new experiences and a deeper passion for the industry and bring them back home with them. It is a very exciting time for the industry and I am excited to have these conversations.
To kick off the series I am sitting down with one of the coolest dudes I have had the pleasure of meeting this year. He goes by the name Greg Cornes and is the owner-operator of Goodness Gracious Cafes in Auckland. Greg is very vocal on his social media channels around adopting technology and automation within his cafes to help with the flow of staff and customers and to also lighten the load on his staff to allow them more time and freedom to give a world-class service that will keep the customer coming back time and time again.
I am so pumped about this episode and this conversation in particular as the industry is currently going through a rapid change of pace and is heading more and more towards automation out on the floor and behind the coffee bar. Some of you will already know of Logan as he is a veteran of the New Zealand coffee industry and as you will learn in this episode, he started his coffee career at a very young age alongside his mother. I hope you are all doing super well? I am so excited (as always) to bring you a new episode of the Home Barista Podcast for Home Baristas and extra excited as this is the very first collab episode.
In this episode, I am joined by a great friend of mine Jaye aka Your Local Barista NZ on Instagram. Jaye is a barista who works for First Hand Coffee in the beautiful Hawkes Bay region of New Zealand. She has a fantastic story to share about her coffee career past, present and future and I know that it will impact so many of you who are starting out as a barista and coffee roaster.
Jaye also touches on a very personal topic about her losing her sister in a tragic accident. This has helped Jaye dream bigger dreams for herself on a personal level and her career and some projects that have come to life in her sister's name!

I get asked this question a lot. I no longer work as a full-time barista and I still get asked the question, but through a different lens of 'Why, did you become a barista?'.
So, in today's episode, I am opening up that question in greater detail and I am quite excited about it.
I will be going back in time to 16-year-old Sean and my first experience with drinking coffee back in the UK and why I became a barista to help me gain more confidence in a personal aspect of my life that affects me to this day. Then to finish off I will touch on why I wanted to get myself more into the wider industry and how that has helped me shape the relationships I have with many brands inside and outside the coffee industry!
