  • How Neurodiversity plays an important role at work and gives companies the edge

As part of our inclusion mini series I have an incredible woman on the show today - Laura or Loz Shallcross is on a mission for more people to understand what it means to be Neurodiverse and to make workplaces more accessible. She is a Support Team Supervisor at WDH and has worked there since 2008.

Loz has both Tourette Syndrome and ADHD and I have invited her to talk and educate me and you on what life's like and how this can impact career progression and how women especially feel about themselves.

She has taught me so much in this single conversation that I know she will be going on to do so much more to raise the awareness of neurodiversity so that everyone can be treated with the understanding and respect.

We talk tics, language, misdiagnosis, misunderstanding and how workplaces can do so much more to make sure that all their employees feel included and are using their strengths to their advantage!

Employers are missing a trick and missing out on having the best people in their teams! Thank you Laura for such an open and honest conversation - you rock!

  • How your company can and should make everyone feel recognised and included

I am back with an exciting mini series especially for Inclusion Week this year which runs from 25th Sept - 1st October. The theme this year is all about Taking Action and Making Impact, a call to action for everyone in the organisations to do what they can to make a difference for and positive impact for their colleagues.

I talk alot about gender and more specifically the importance of visibility for women's career progression - and I wanted to create something that not only gave me the chance to learn more from incredible women but also to highlight the importance of intersectionality when it comes to inclusion.

  • Why we still need to talk about ambitious women having it all?

I am very excited to have an incredible woman on the show who I met last year. We got talking and well lets just say we didn't stop.

So many shared passions around career progression, gender and the intersectionality's that come with being a woman in work.

Roxann Dawson is a Business Assurance Director and influential senior leader who has a proven track record of developing and deploying business strategy and leadership for quality and business improvement within complex infrastructure organisations.

She has a wealth of experience in Rail, Construction, London Underground, Safety and Supply Chain industries. As well as thriving in a male dominated industries, she is passionate about inclusion and advocates the importance of ‘levelling the playing field’ for all parties.

Roxann believes investment through volunteering is a key building block to making a difference and building a strong network. Roxann is a board trustee and chair of governance risk committee for the Chartered Quality Institute and as a parent is also a diversity and inclusion governor at her local secondary school, keen to use the power of her voice, time and expertise to support others."

Listen in because today we are talking about ‘having it all’ when ambitious women don't want to have choose between their career and family yet so often feel like they have to.

Do you think times are changing?

How does your organisation support this?

Maybe it doesn't or maybe it is making real strides forward in helping parents and especially women to keep the juggle going.

Roxann shares her own personal experiences of being a mother of 3 girls and having an incredible career and what she did and continues to do to make sure that it works for her and that she can have it all. Enjoy!

  • How important is visibility and self promotion in education?

    Takeaways...

How important is visibility for teachers? The potential of a positive impact on education With visibility comes opportunities for individuals and educational organisations and schools

With everything that is going on right now and the teachers and public sector strikes we wanted to re-release this epic episode which focuses on education and whether visibility has a place for educators and teachers - you can probably already guess my opinion on that but I wanted to chat to an amazing teacher Leisa Grace Wilson who is currently the Editorial Director of Teach Middle East Magazine.

We chat about the lack of visibility of teachers especially the work that goes on behind the scene and the reasons why teachers avoid putting themselves out there. We look at the impact that they could actually have on the negative media attention that teachers and education in general often have to face.

If you are a teacher let us know your take on visibility for you or if you know any teachers then make sure you share this episode with them.

  • How to make sure the menopause doesn't impact on women's visibility at work with special guest Julie Dennis

We have an amazing conversation on the podcast for you today! Now

As the title suggests we are talking about the big M - no not money, but something that everyone should have more awareness about and that includes the men.

Julie Dennis runs one of the UK’s leading menopause consultancies for organisations who want to create positive conversations and behaviours around menopause to help retain top talent, impact the gender pay gap and reduce business costs and risks.

She’s spent the past five years working with 100s of organisations across the UK to raise awareness, educate and improve the experience of people working through menopause.

So I wanted to ask her about how she thinks the menopause can affect women’s visibility and career progression.

Do you think it can? Maybe you have some experiences of this for yourself? If you do listen in and then get in touch and share your thoughts.

She shares some of her own experiences and strategies and tips that organisations and individuals can do right now to make a difference in their workplace and be better allies.

  • Why being vulnerable is absolutely a strength

    #Takeaways

The power of being an authentic role model that inspires Companies can do more to create a safe space for women from all levels to share stories and experiences Leaders hold back from always sharing because they feel like they need to protect others Peer groups and women’s networks are key to shifting the company culture. Women can have it all - when they figure out what their all is Surround yourself with different people so you can open your mind

Even though this episode was recorded almost two years ago to the day we couldn't resist including it with all of the other inspiring re-releases we have shared again with you!

This episode we have the super inspiring Zandra Moore on the show. Zandra is CEO and Co-Founder of Panintelligence Data Analytics Software Business in Leeds and Founder of LeanIn Leeds 800+ women's leadership network, mum to 2 and football coach to twenty, 15 year old girls.

When you meet Zandra you cannot help but be inspired by her. And that's exactly how I felt a number of years ago. I am really excited to have her on the show as she doesn't hold back.

She is open and willing to talk about things that sometimes female leaders don't often talk about. Women often have to work so hard in their careers that being vulnerable when you are in a senior positions can be difficult. Although vulnerability is absolutely a strength it’s not always viewed that way by others. So many women are inspired by those around them but have often told me that they can’t ever reach those heights. Seeing successful career women as ‘superwomen’ or having to make huge sacrifices in their lives to get to where they want to be.

Isn't it time we start breaking down these barriers to show what the reality is and that if women want it all they have to figure out what their ‘all’ looks like and that anything is possible for them.

“ It’s had it’s hurdles, of course it has it’s never been plain sailing, but when I look back at why I have been able to persist and overcome those hurdles, I had the benefit of somebody from a very young age that made me believe that anything was possible” - Zandra

“ It’s addictive...the more you do for others the more these things walk towards you..givers gain “ - Zandra

“You don't have to be an expert in something to be able to add value or change things or inspire others“ - Zandra

“I want women to hear that message that you don’t have to know everything to get ahead” - Gemma

“People just present the good, they never present the bad. It’s never easy in any role whatever level you are at and it doesn't change whether you are a graduate or a CEO” - Zandra

“There’s such power in the ‘me too’ element of safe spaces and that association with each other” - Gemma

We wanted to raise this important topic again and what better way than to do it with this great episode with amazing guest Michelle Jackson who is now Head of Diversity and Inclusion at Shaw Trust.

    Takeaways!

Barriers facing women at work Why feedback is important Celebrate the achievements The importance of peer recognition Internal Women's Networks (ERGs)

  • How do you know when it is the right time to lean in?

This is such a great episode that we wanted to share it again! Since recording this Kat has progressed her career in so many incredible ways! Go check her out over on LinkedIn and connect with her right here >> https://www.linkedin.com/in/katwellum-kent/

    #Takeaways

Finding your own way of leadership really works How to start making those steps and the importance of building habits with self promotion How to notice if you are playing small through use of your own language The benefits of having an external coach How to showcase yourself rather than sell yourself

On today’s show we are thinking about how you know when it is the right time to lean in? And what I mean by that is starting to think differently about your career progression, how you stand apart and building a self promotion strategy that gets you the results you REALLY want.

As a previous client of mine Kat and I were recently reviewing how far she has come by getting clear on what she wants and the impact that being more visible can have for her own ambitions and those around her. Kathryn is a shining example of a woman who has definitely leaned in to owning who she is and the results speak for themselves.

    Guest:

Kathryn Wellum-Kent is an accountant and business advisor working for MHA Monahans, one of the leading professional services firms in the South West, after spending the first 16 years of her career working at Deloitte.

She is passionate about working with start-up and scale-up companies that have big ambitions, and need support to achieve these, with particular focus on capturing & interpreting financial information needed for their business planning & decision making.

Beyond that though, Kathryn has a strong vision of how the industry needs to change to better support its clients, its staff and the wider community and is using her current role and her network to drive change and challenge traditional thinking. This work was recognised through being named one of the top 50 women in accounting in 2021.

She has also recently taken on the role of finance trustee at a charity based in Swindon called Inner Flame, which is working to support 16-25s not currently in education, employment or training who are experiencing barriers to independence or contributing to their community.

“An important part of leadership is finding your way of doing things rather than trying to be something else” Kathryn

“We have habits that don't often serve us and can be connected to staying small” Gemma

“You’ve got habits and you don’t even realise you are doing them” - Kathryn

“I stopped cutting my legs off before I had even started” - Kathryn

“I really wanted to work with someone who could work with me to help me understand some of the things that were holding me back and achieve what I wanted to in my career” - Kathryn

“All the things that we have worked on together have helped me talk about myself in a very authentic and open way” - Kathryn

“I’m not the kind of person who can sell; I don’t want to feel like i’m selling myself, selling my company - I just want to show people about me and what I am doing and I feel like that should speak for itself” - Kathryn

“You don’t have to throw yourself in the deep end it’s about building up these things gradually” - Gemma

  • How opening the door helps ALL women be seen and heard

The importance of gatekeepers to open doors Why mentoring matters and how reverse mentoring is powerful Black women and visibility in the workplace Systemic inequalities and bias Allies and the skills that are really needed

Today on the podcast we have an inspiring woman who is passionate about breaking down those inequalities that women of colour, black women and those from ethnic minorities face. Lucy Ndlovu is also an advocate for mentoring and believes that it is a game changer.

We talk about the impact of role models and how often as a black woman comes a huge responsibility and the power of reverse mentoring - yes that means a CEO or director being mentored by someone possibly less senior so they can understand their lived experiences which would only serve to benefit them as individuals and allies but also the company as a whole.

Lucy and I also share the impact of gatekeepers and how one man in New York changed Lucy’s life forever when he literally opened the door for her. The story gave me goosebumps. Keep listening, you don't want to miss this one.

“Open the door and then leave it open for others to follow” - Lucy Ndlovu

  • How companies can encourage their women more effectively with special guest Jess Taha.

Re-sharing this amazing interview. Jess has moved on since the first release of this episode and is now the Board HR Director for Mr Fothergill's Seeds Ltd.

    #Takeaways

The important part that companies can play when it comes to women being more visible. The company culture is vital to identify and empower the top and emerging talent. Being able to be themselves allows women to step up and find their own ways to be more visible. Companies need to give women the platform to shine. Organisations need to start by talking to their people. The drive starts at the top and isn’t all down to HR to solve the gender gap.

Today on the No More Hiding podcast I am talking to an amazing and super inspiring woman all about how companies have a responsibility in providing their female top talent a platform to help them be more visible and own their ideas and opinions.

Working Mum. Essex girl. Committed feminist. Jess Taha has spent her career working across multiple industries for a number of household names and most recently with Swan in social housing. Her extensive experience as an HR professional has seen her deal with people, talent and policy and the challenges those bring for women progressing their careers. Promoting, pioneering and advocating for fairer working environments for all, Jess is unapologetically a woman on a mission.

So listen in to this incredible conversation that will give you insights into how companies can support women’s career progression and self promotion and how women themselves can start owning their expertise. Love love love this conversation and could have chatted all day to Jess!

“I got massive imposter syndrome and didn’t feel like I fitted in where I was working...I felt like I had to fit in with that ‘boy’s club” - Jess

“I got into HR because I wanted to fight injustice and I am a huge feminist and I believe in equal pay” - Jess

“As we get older we tend to stop giving a shit about what people think” - Jess

“Part of my role is un-training women everything they have learned as a child about being a good girl, about being accepting about having to fit in and having to please people and wanting to be liked” - Jess

“I am a senior manager in my organisation and I still make sure I have those conversations with people on the ground regardless of their level to really get to know them and that's when you start to realise oh my goodness we have got a good girl on our hands we need to make them more of a rebel” - Jess

“People can look at me and think god she's so confident and actually I am not - underneath it all I am actually just a girl from Essex … and people don’t always know the fight or the struggle I have been through to get to be this confident woman” - Jess

“I am working with companies and these group coaching programmes and what comes up time and time again are all these amazing ideas and opinions and that they haven't shared any of them outside the group” - Gemma

“It’s all about unleashing her capabilities and getting her confidence up. For me it’s all about giving that individual the platform. I don’t do anything she shines on her own. She is amazing” - Jess
