In this little extra podcast I talk to Mike House about his forthcoming Three Peaks Challenge, climbing Ben Nevis, Scafell Pike and Snowdon in 24 hours, raising money and awareness for Young Minds UK.
Along the way we discuss his photography, the Duke of Edinburgh award, his preparations and expectations for his adventure as well as the effects of the pandemic on his students and children in particular.
I'm putting it out a little early to coincide with Mental Health Awareness Week and to give us plenty of time to raise money and awareness for his cause.

Hiking The Pacific Crest Trail // with Chris Townsend
In the very first podcast from Just Up The Trail, I sit down with hiker, writer and outdoorsman, Chris Townsend.
Chris’ book “Rattlesnakes and Bald Eagles” inspired me to move on from single day hikes and mountain days to the bigger challenge of multi-day backpacking trips. I read it one Christmas and by Easter we were hiking the the West Highland Way.
Chris has hiked many miles over the years and written over 25 books about his trips and the outdoors but today he joins me to discuss his 1982 hike of the Pacific Crest Trail, the 2653 mile trail from Mexico to Canada, and the book that inspired me to got out further and longer.
During the conversation we touch on:
How a young man from Lancashire finds out about a ribbon of trail halfway around the world, in 1980.Chris’ first encounter with the heat of desert hikingThe importance of solitude in the outdoors How the PCT defined the next 40 years of his life.A massive thank you to Chris for coming out to play and being the very first contributor to what promises to be a wonderful library of stories and adventure from the outdoors.
A little more about Chris Townsend
Chris Townsend writes regularly for TGO Magazine and has written 22 books on the outdoors, including the award winning The Backpacker's Handbook. His recent publications feature two long-distance walks he undertook in the USA. Grizzly Bears and Razor Clams documents his hike on the Pacific Northwest Trail and Rattlesnakes and Bald Eagles his 1982 hike on the Pacific Crest Trail as well as more recently, Along The Divide in which he walks 700 miles of the Scottish watershed.
You can find Chris’ writings and musings on his extensive blog www.christownsendoutdoors.com and his books on Sandstone Press here.

Welcome to Just Up The Trail.
Before we officially start the show next month. I just wanted to introduce myself and this little project that I'm putting together. So my name is Rob Jones. I'm a hiker. I'm a pretty terrible climber. I love camping. I love being outdoors. I love taking my kids on adventures and now i'm getting into podcasting. for as long as we've been going a I've always tried to turn our trips and adventures and our hikes into stories but after years of telling my story, I want to start sharing the stories of other people's adventures. And that's what this show is.
It's a place to sit down with people who are doing cool things in really cool and beautiful places. Members of this outdoors community that I've felt a part of for the last few years. I want to create a library of stories, of experiences, of adventure, of knowledge, and know how, a place where people can come to hear what's going on in this vibrant and inclusive community that we have in the outdoors
If you have a story to tell, drop me a line at www.justupthetrail.com
You can follow us on Instagram and Facebook.
And you can also sign up for alerts and updates on the website, as we approached the big launch in May.
So please tell a friend about the show, share us on your socials and generally keep an eye and an ear out for us and until then.... happy trails.
