  • Hey Pomcats! It's been a woolly, witty and wonderful nine years with you all, but it's time for us to hang up our headphones and say goodbye!

This last episode of the Pomcast sees Lydia and Sophie reminiscing about their recording adventures and special moments, and it of course has to end with the favourite feature, 'Top Three!' Plus, it wouldn't be a Pomcast without a special guest interview, so the gals interview each other (finally)!

A huge thank you all our wonderful listeners and to the Pom Pom team for all your support!

Although the Pomcast is ending there is lots to enjoy from the world of Pom Pom! To be kept informed with all the latest updates, delightful titbits, and treats, we recommend signing up to our weekly newsletter!

  • Hi Pomcats! We hope you’re having a great summer? The Pomcast is currently on a summer break, but we’re bringing you a bonus episode to enjoy! We’re talking to Naomi Polonsky, an assistant curator at Murray Edwards College in Cambridge and learning all about the current exhibition ‘What Lies Beneath; Woman, Politics, Textiles’.

We were lucky enough to have a private tour of the exhibition and have a chat with Naomi afterwards about the art works and creating the show. This episode is the recording of our interview with Naomi where we find out about the exhibition and the Woman’s Art Collection, the largest collection of modern and contemporary art by women!

The exhibition is on until 28th August, but if you can’t make it person, you can take the virtual tour online at womensart.murrayedwards.cam.ac.uk. Thanks so much to Naomi and to Laura Mosely who organised this visit for us!

  • Hey Pomcats! Those lazy, hazy days of summer are just around the corner, why not take a little break and put your feet up with an episode of Pomcast?

This episode we’re talking about the cultural delights of the Hayward Gallery, as Lydia and Sophie had both recently seen the work of Louise Bourgeois which is on display there. A must for any textile and sculpture lover! Meanwhile Lydia is working on her own artworks for her MA project and hoping she can fit in some sewing plans with the Saguaro co-ord set by Friday Pattern Company.

It’s no surprise that we’re totally jazzed about the newest issue of Pom Pom Quarterly! We talk about some of the patterns we’re hoping to cast on, including the Keswick wrap and Streamers jumper. We’re also looking forward to trying new techniques with the Lateralis socks and Lackadaisical mitts. Speaking of, don’t miss out on our exclusive anniversary merch which features the mitt daisy motif!

Thanks for listening! We’re taking a break from recording  for the summer but will be back in August with the next season of the Pomcast!

And now you’ll get to know her latest design Paragon which graces one side of our super bumper double cover anniversary issue 41! We loved having a chat with Sylvia learning all about her knitting life and inspirations, the importance of reflecting her African heritage in her designs and of course all about Paragon!

  • Hi Pomcats! Welcome back to aural knitting space that is the Pomcast! Wind those skeins and dig out your stitch markers and join us for another chat episode.

We start this episode with a somewhat detailed description of coffees and beverages and then chat Sophie’s adventures in clay and Lydia’s sewing studio set up. Knitwise, Lydia has been continuing to enjoy her adventures in intarsia, while Sophie has made the ever so cosy and warm Skyhill mitts!

It’s been on the horizon for a while, but we are just so excited for Pom Pom Quarterly issue 41! We chat a little bit about what you can expect, and want to remind you to mark your calendars for the previews on 27th April! We’re also giving you some behind the scenes information about our recent sock book shoot! This publication will be similar to Ready Set Raglan, and we were delighted to work with sock aficionado Rachel Coopey on this project.

Do you love stationery? We feel there must be an overlap with those that love knitting and those who delight in luxury pens and drawing tools? Well, for Lydia this certainly is the case and is enjoying her new Caran D'Ache Neocolor crayons. And for Sophie, she is reviling in the glamor, drama and fun that is the latest season of RuPaul’s Drag Race. And of course, the episode ends with our thoughts on two perhaps lesser known museums, the Shell Museum and the Pencil Museum.

We were delighted to get to know Ainur better, after admiring her designs in issues of Pom Pom for a while! You’ll know her patterns Dayspring from Issue 36, the Alatau hat design from Issue 31, and Astragal from Issue 30.

We talk about the many hats she wears as a knitwear designer, spiritual sustainability and social media, and her love of garter stitch. Plus she also drops hints about the construction of her design in our forthcoming Issue 41!

Thanks so much Ainur! You can keep up to date with her designs via Instagram @mamasteddybear and on her website here.

  • Hey Pomcats! Get cozy and grab your latest WIP, it’s time for a catch up! This episode we’re catching up with Lydia’s travels stateside as she was recently in Austin, Texas to join Meghan for the Issue 41 photoshoot! Meanwhile Sophie is fresh from seeing a talk at the Crafts Council by Lorna Hamilton-Brown as part of the ‘We Gather’ exhibition.

Photoshoot day is always an important one for the team, and Issue 41 is an extra special issue as it marks our 10th anniversary! We have so much to tell you about the exciting things you can expect from this issue which will all be revealed in the coming weeks. Needless to say, mark your diaries for the pattern previews and pre-order release on 27th April as you won’t want to miss this bumper landmark issue!

We also catch up with what we are knitting! Sophie has the comforting jumper ‘Merywen’ from Ready Set Raglan on her needles and is using The Uncommon Thread, while Lydia is having an intarsia adventure with a self-drafted design. Continuing the theme of stateside travels, Lydia was delighted to visit the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art and see the work of Ruth Asawa which features woven wire sculptures, while Sophie recommends The Well Gardened Mind for an insight into the restorative power of gardening.

If you didn’t know already, Aimee is the designer of the Issue 40 cover star, the Effervescent pullover! We chat about their inspiration behind this design and what crafting means to them. We also learn about the all important Boba Time socks using 626 Yarn & Fiber Company yarns, which started Aimee's designing journey! Speaking of yarn, you’re probably wondering what was that unspun yarn Aimee mentions at the end of the episode? Well for those spinners amongst us, you need to check out Nutiden yarn!

  • Hey Pomcats! We’re springing into the first ‘armchair chat’ of the year - a new working title for the Sophie and Lydia episodes! While the Pomcast hibernated over the winter, we had our own adventures to update each other on. Lydia has delighted in the joys of horse riding, while Sophie launched the maiden meet-up of her volunteer run repair cafe!

Spring is the thing on our mind as we celebrate the upcoming arrival of Issue 40! Floaty and whimsical, abstract and embellished, this selection of patterns will transport you to your yarn-filled dreamland! Shot at the Emma S. Barrientos Mexican American Cultural Centre, you can take a peek at the whole collection on our blog. We chat through some of top picks including Flotti and Cloudbow, which prompts the question to the Pomcats, are you pro knitted dresses? Also on the to-knit list are Leonora with it’s fab use of beads and intarsia detail and the fluffy Cirriform socks!

At the time of recording, we were preparing to make the trip to Unravel, our first ‘real life’ festival in the UK since the start of 2020. So it’s no surprise that the thought of seeing so many Pom pals and stalls of skeins in person has us jazzed! We’ll be sharing the sights and sounds of the festival soon, so stay tuned!

  • Hi Pomcasts, welcome to the penultimate episode of the year! We’re delighted to be joined by guest interviewer Belinda Johnson, a fellow member of the Pom Pom team who had a chat with sound artist Sam Topley.

Before we got to the interview, it was only right that we had a chat with Belinda and introduced her to you lovely listeners. As well as finding out a little more about her role at Pom Pom and her journey through the world of knitting, Belinda mused on the patterns that are currently gracing her needles. These included the currently hibernating Eirys from Ready Set Raglan (just awaiting that final ball of De Rerum Natura Gilliatt!), plus Grainne, which is also from Ready Set Raglan, the delightfully named ‘project cookie monster’! Belinda also lamented the currently frogged Trembita mittens she was working on, but confirms that the pattern is so easy that she’ll be restarting these very soon.

It was music to our ears to find out that Sam Topley was going to be a guest on the pomcast! Sam is a sound artist and researcher working with textiles to create handmade electronic musical instruments and interactive sound art work. Her collaborative projects explore ideas in craftivism, using DIY fibre crafting to engage new audiences with experimental music making. Thanks Sam!

If you need to be inspired to move some furniture around here is Lydia’s song of the moment: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h-QDjghO4C8

We’re talking about our exciting book projects for next year! Coming in 2022 is our baby and kids pattern book Minipom, which will feature scaled down versions of some classic Pom Pom designs and new patterns too. We’re also working with sock aficionado Rachel Coopey on a sock book (surprise!) which will be akin to Ready Set Raglan!

On the horizon as well is our Spring Issue 40, which is inspired by ‘dreamworlds’ and features lots of dreamy and ethereal designs. The pals also discuss what they're enjoying and watching at the moment!

We also want to hear from you for the last Pomcast of this year, as we’re planning a special festive ‘Ask Us Anything’ episode! Send us and the Pom Pom team your questions about anything and everything, we can’t wait to hear what you want to know! Send us an email via [email protected]. • Hi Pomcats! The kettle’s on and we’ve saved a space for you! Come join us with your craft of choice and catch up on all Pom Pom news and musings from Sophie and Lydia.

So, what have we been up to? Sophie took Lydia’s recommendation from episode 63 and made the trip to see Paula Rego at Tate Britain, what a moving exhibition! Lydia has been navigating a house move, but has squeezed in seeing some live music and has finished reading the latest Sally Rooney novel. The pals also discuss their ideas for starting a repair cafe and are looking for advice, have any listeners taken part in something like this?

We’re also marking our calendars for the pre-order release of Interpretations Volume 8, which will be on 9th November! We were very excited to have received the delivery of this beautiful publication at the UK studio recently. Behind the scenes we’re getting Issue 39 ready to land on doormats and in post boxes around the world, and Sophie has made a start on the crochet cardi Rockmore! She could be playing yarn chicken with this one, but is in love with this intuitive stitch pattern.

  • Hi Pomcats! Autumn is in full swing for many of us, what are your knitting plans this season? Well, what better way to get inspired than to cosy up with our latest episode and enjoy our chat with authors Kiyomi and Sachiko Burgin.

We wanted to hear all about their recent Pom Pom Press publication, Moon and Turtle! This collaborative project between the twin sisters infuses unique and contemporary design details with classic knitwear styles, and features lots of easy instructions to make a custom fit. We also chat about what it was like producing a book during the pandemic, the process of working together and the important meaning behind the book's title.

Of course Lydia and Sophie had to have a chat about what projects would find their way onto their needles next! We give a shout out to the Pokapoka hat and the Zenar socks. A fav amongst most of the Pom team is the cover star Kordy (did you see the swatching blog post here?) and the cosy cabled cardigan Cesium.

  • Hi Pomcats, did you miss us? Well we missed you! After a short respite, we’re renewed and ready to start this next chapter of knit chat goodness. We’re trying a new schedule too, so instead of a monthly offering, you can look forward to a new Pomcast episode every two weeks! We’ll also be alternating between dedicated interview episodes and ones that focus on Pom news and knitting/craft chat! You’ll also see that our logo has had a digital lick of paint thanks to the talented Amy Blackwell!

For this audio offering, we’re getting cosy with Gudrun Johnston and hearing all about her upcoming release The Shetland Trader, Book Three: Heritage. For this collection Gudrun has taken the designs from her mothers made-to-order knitwear business run in the 1970s and updated them for contemporary knitters. This publication has been so thoughtfully researched, with Gudrun exploring the family archives and playing ‘knit detective’ with historical samples, it was a pleasure to hear more about how she put together Book Three.
