  • Sequoia Schmidt. Wow- where do I begin? How can you possibly give just a one paragraph intro to someone who has had such a unique and full on 33 years of life.

Let’s start with the cool stuff:

After being born and raised in Napier, Sequoia set up her own publishing company in Texas at 16 and has written best-selling books. She also likes to do extreme stuff in her spare time, like base jumping, skydiving, mountain climbing, silence retreats.

Then there’s the less glamourous stuff:

A tumultuous childhood with family dynamics that can only be described as complicated which saw her end in foster care and ultimately moving to the US to the care of an incredible grandparent. Then losing her dad and brother to an avalanche on K2 in Pakistan in 2013 and going on a mission to find their remains. We discuss how these events reshaped her life and led her to explore her fears and resilience. And the lessons learned from her past (oh, and I forgot to mention a lifetime ban from the Warehouse in Hawkes Bay).

There is a lot to unpack with the Sequoia Schmidt story, and there is no way we could do it justice in just one podcast…but we do unpack a lot. I loved this chat and I hope you do too.

  • Brodie Kane was one of my first guests when I launched my podcast early in 2022.

Since then, we have got even closer and have become running friends. So, this is her second appearance on the podcast- but this chat is very different to the first one because my very talented mate has now gone and written a book about her life experiences- the good the bad and the ugly. Oooh there is some ugly in there! The books awesome by the way- "Woman Uninterrupted"

Brodie is an open book, she is forthright, opinionated and outspoken so nothing was off the table- we cover some crunchy topics here including the public backlash she experienced as a reporter on TV, her redundancy at the start of the pandemic and how she dusted herself off and bounced back, an abortion she had in her 20s and her decision to speak about it publicly. And lots of fun stuff, including her relationship with her parents and her time in the army before getting into media

This chat is a celebration of resilience and self-acceptance from a woman I am lucky enough to call a good friend.

  • Marc Moore is the founder and creative director of the fashion brand Stolen Girlfriends Club.

Marc launched Stolen almost 20 years ago and is still going strong, surviving the pandemic, the GFC and all the other challenges small businesses must face.

Some of the stuff we cover includes how his brand was born almost 20 years ago and the steep highs as well as the very deep lows of growing a fashion business:

How it became popular with some A list celebrities, including Miley Cyrus and The Weeknd, who wore one of their tops onstage for a performance with Taylor Swift.

Also, we get into some deeply personal stuff, including his early years in Raglan being raised by a solo mum and his confusing relationship with his dad, the late Marc Hunter from the rock band Dragon.

This stuff is hard to talk about so I cannot thank Marc enough for being so open to sharing such personal and vulnerable topics.

Before doing this episode, I knew Marc in passing and I always thought he was a cool guy. Now I know for sure he is. I hope you guys love this episode as much as I did.

  • Cori Gonzalez Macuer, one of New Zealand’s most popular comedians. Also, a very talented actor- probably best known for his work in Wellington Paranormal or the Taiki Waititi and Jermaine Clement movie “What we do in the shadows.”

Whether you are familiar with Cori’s work or not, I think you’ll like this conversation. It’s a rollercoaster ride of emotion, humor, and introspection.

We explore his early years in Chile, his 21-year career in comedy, his mental health battles, the suicide of his father, the sting of criticism, the fallout from controversial jokes, his relationship with his daughter Freddy and why Academy Award winning actor Adrian Brody is a big dick.

  • On September 25, 2007 William Pike was taking a mate up to the top of Mount Ruapehu. The two climbers made it to a little hut called the Dome Shelter then shortly after, in the cold and dark of night, the mountain erupted.

As a torrent of rocks, water and mud streamed down and smashed into their shelter, William was crushed and trapped and left fighting for his life.

When he woke up in hospital, his right leg had been amputated below the knee.

The medical staff who worked on him called his survival a miracle.

After multiple surgeries and a full-on rehabilitation, William learned to walk again with a prosthetic limb – and what he’s done with his life since is nothing short of inspirational. After escaping death, he has most definitely been making the most of life.

This is part of the incredible William Pike story- an absolute masterclass in resilience.

    Hope you like it.

  • MICHAEL HURST

When it comes to acting in NZ there is very little this guy has not done.

Michael and his wife, Jennifer Ward Lealand are the definition of an acting power couple. She was even named NZ of the year in 2020.

At the time of recording this they are about to star in a new play together called “In Other Words.”

    (It's on at Auckland's Q Theatre from 3-15 September)

    https://www.qtheatre.co.nz/shows/other-words

This conversation is a small part of the Michael Hurst story.

From moving to NZ from the UK as a kid.

How he fell in love with acting and, in particular, Shakespeare.

We talk about the Hercules and Xena era which made him an international celebrity, not to mention a lot of money. So many cool stories about this era, including his recollections of working with a young Ryan Gosling. And the time he hit Hercules in the head with a sword.

Michael Hurst is an incredibly passionate and enthusiastic guy who has devoted his whole life to his craft, and it was a pleasure to pick his brains for a long form chat like this. I hope you guys like this.

  • The Jackie Robertson Podcast:

Towards the end of 2023, just a couple of weeks after running a half marathon, the very fit and healthy Waikato mum went in for a routine blood test that changed her life.

Jackie was diagnosed with stage four colorectal cancer that had also metastasized into her liver.

For Jackie, who had zero symptoms, this news was extra tough because she is also the mother of a non-verbal son on the autism spectrum.

This is Jackie Robertson's story. It’s not pretty…but it is powerful and inspiring.

  • Michaela Blyde has just recently returned from the Olympics in Paris where she won her second gold medal, playing Rugby Sevens for the Black Ferns

I think this will go down as one of my favorite episodes of all time- just because of her attitude, energy, enthusiasm and authenticity. And just because she’s bloody hilarious and fun to be around.

We talk a lot about her recent Olympic experience, including being drug tested immediately after winning gold and going viral after meeting her sporting idol, the legendary Jamaican sprinter Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce (it's a great story- doesn’t get more Kiwi than this)

We also talk about her upcoming wedding to another Gold medalist, her children’s book, body image, the challenges and rewards of elite training, goal setting, manifestation, journaling and so much more.

Michaela is the real deal- a role model on and off the field. This episode is jam packed with cool lessons and stories.

  • Phoebe Harris is a 22-year-old swimmer who joined the Only Fans platform in January 2022 and since then, she has done VERY well for herself.

Before Only Fans she was on a WINZ benefit. Now, she earns more than the Prime Minister!

So, what IS Only Fans? How much money does she make? How much of a cut do Only Fans take? What sort of backlash and stigma comes with being a success on that platform? What do her partner and parents think of it and much more! Everything you wanted to know about Only Fans but didn’t know who to ask.

In this episode we get to learn a bit about Phoebe, who moved to New Zealand from England as a young girl and fell in love with swimming. And how that has led to an insanely financially rewarding career as an Only Fans creator.

With her Only Fans income she has created a fitness app, become a landlord with three properties, bought her parents their dream caravan and a new car.

She bought her own house at 20 with a $250,000 deposit, she got herself a brand-new Porsche for $340k! She doesn’t drive it all the time though - sometimes she drives her Nissan Navara Ute. And at the time of recording this she had just returned from a first-class trip to Europe.

My goal with all these discussions is to try and get a better understanding of a person and their choices through non-judgmental long form conversation. Thanks for understanding and listening.

Chook retired after 47 years in South Auckland as a Detective Sergeant with three silver merit awards. He now has a book out all about his remarkable life and career called “Unmasking Monsters.”

In this conversation, Chook opens up about some of the significant cases he worked on, including his interactions with two of New Zealand’s most evil men- Joseph Thompson and Malcom Rewa. And why he always thought Teina Pora was an innocent man.

Then we get into your questions submitted on IG: Should police be armed, his thoughts on youth crime and how to fix it, thoughts for young Kiwis thinking about joining the police, one tip for parents to keep their kids safe and so much more.

Chook is a man who has spent his life doing his best to best to keep his community safe and make New Zealand a better place and I can’t thank him enough for his time.

  • Sir Graham Henry (aka “Ted”) is one of the greatest All Black coaches of all time. He left the role with a win record of 85%

In 2011, with a little help from his friends, he coached the All Blacks to a Rugby World Cup win, breaking a 24-year drought.

This was made even more remarkable on account of a thing called The Henry clause- a rule made by the NZ Rugby union in the late 1990s to make sure Graham would never get to coach the All Blacks after he went overseas to coach Wales.

We talk about that clause and so much more- his early years and how he got together with his soulmate, Raewyn. His self-diagnosed depression which saw him quit coaching in the UK, his 103-test coaching career with the All Blacks and much more.

Sir Graham Henry is a sharp operator, and this was a lot of fun. For me at least. Hope you guys love it.

  • Strap yourself in for a wild ride- my most chaotic podcast EVER!

Andrew Fagan is a kiwi musician. In the 1980’s he was the singer of one of New Zealand’s most popular bands called The Mockers.

Chances are, if you know any of their songs it’ll be Forever Tuesday Morning.

But for a 12-year-old Dom Harvey. He knew every word of every song.

Obsessed is a big word…but that was my relationship with this band called the Mockers. I was a psycho-fan…and I would be prepared fight anyone who dared to disagree they were the best band in the world.

So, to sit down for a long conversation with one of my childhood heroes was something truly special.

This is by far the most unique and bizarre podcast I’ve ever done- Andrew turned up with his own props including a flag, a stool, a bell, a water spray bottle, guitar and amp.

We talk about his life in music, including those years in The Mockers- his recollections of the infamous 1984 Queen Street Riots and the deep impact of losing a bandmate to suicide.

We also discuss in great length his love of solo voyages in the open ocean in small boats.

Then we go deep with some musings on life, aging, mental health and future goals.

Whether you're a long-time fan of The Mockers or new to wonderful world and mind of Andrew Fagan, this episode offers a glimpse into the life of a remarkable New Zealander (who I am lucky to call a mate).

  • Doctor Inia Raumati is an absolute savage- as well as being an emergency doctor in the intense Auckland Hospital, he also an inspirational adventurer who has taken part in ultra-marathon stage runs all over the world that last for a week.

When we recorded this, he was halfway through an audacious goal to complete events on every continent of the world during 2024.

We talk about these events in depth- the level of planning and preparation is, as you’d expect, next level. These runs are no joke…so don’t be fooled by the way he talks about them like they are no big deal!

Then the professional stuff- his time as a medic in Iraq for the NZ army, his time as a volunteer for the Westpac rescue helicopter and life as an emergency doctor- including working in hospital during the pandemic, the amount of violence and anger the staff encounter every weekend and what it feels like when a patient you are working on dies and so much more. It was a fascinating insight into a world I knew nothing about from a guy who has seen it all!

This chat was organized by Inia's fiancé Vicki who is my vet (well, my dogs vet). I thought it would be one for the running nerds, but it is much more than that. Inia is just a super inspiring and positive guy who is living his best life and wants to help others do the same. I loved our conversation and I hope you do too.

  • Ed Byrne has been on the Graham Norton show numerous times, he’s been on the late-night talk shows in America, he’s been on the Celebrity Chase…twice. And now he’s on my podcast. Very exciting for me…not so exciting for Ed!

At the time of recording this (August 2024) Ed is touring NZ with his show called “Tragedy plus time.”

A heartbreakingly hilarious show that deals with the death of his younger brother Paul.

Reviewers have been calling it the best work of Ed's 30-year career. We talk a lot about Paul, their relationship and processing grief with humor.

See him at a venue near you:

    https://edbyrne.com/live-dates/

We discuss his very first tour of NZ way back in the late 1990s where he made nationwide news for trolling a barman- it’s a great story.

Why New Zealand holds a special place in his heart and why Oamaru got a completely different Ed Byrne show to every other venue.

His encounter with Robert Downey Junior when they shared the sofa on the Graham Norton show together and so much more.

I loved spending this quality time with Ed Byrne, and I hope you do to.

  • ABBAS NAZARI

When the Taliban were at the height of their power in 2001, Abbas was 7 years old. By the time he arrived in New Zealand as a refugee almost a year later, he was 8. What happened in between is nothing short of incredible. The fact the Nazari family survived the journey was one thing. But they have done much better than that- they have thrived!

Abbas shares his memories of escaping the Taliban as a little boy with little more than the clothes on his back, being adrift in the middle of the Indian ocean in an overcrowded rickety wooden boat that was most definitely not sea-worthy, in fact it was literally falling apart.

Then getting rescued by a big shipping boat called the Tampa and becoming part of an international standoff before finding home in NZ as a refuge.

Somehow, against all odds, Abbas who spoke no English when he touched down here went on to get a podium finish in a secondary schools spelling bee, played rugby (and even claims he taught Richie Mo’unga how to kick LOL). He also got a degree, was awarded a scholarship in Washington DC and now runs his own business.

That’s not all! He’s also an in demand public speaker, and he has written a great book called “After The Tampa.” Which covers his life story in much greater detail than a long form podcast can do. If you love this chat and you’re keen for more, google that.

  • Dame Lisa Carrington is the Greatest NZ Olympian of all time- 5 gold medals and 1 bronze medal over the past 3 Olympic Games. And maybe she will add to that at the Paris Olympic Games.

This podcast is a re-release. It first came out at the start of 2023. I decided to rerelease it in time for the Paris Olympics because it was such a cool conversation.

Also, the podcast has grown so much since it came out I thought there would be a lot of new listeners who are unaware Lisa has even been a guest.

This is such a cool conversation. We see Lisa on TV, usually smiling on the podium with a gold medal around her neck followed by a 30-second sound bite on the news. But I have never heard Lisa be this candid before. Ever. This is a true look into the mind of a world-class athlete. You’ll get to know her strengths, weaknesses, flaws, fears, insecurities, and everything in between.

There are so many cool lessons and insights in this conversation:

The challenges female athletes face, such as maintaining balance between a demanding sports career and personal life ambitions.

Lisa opens up about the rigorous discipline required in her everyday life to be so good for so long.

We explore her early beginnings in Surf Life Saving, the crucial role played by her mentor Ian Ferguson, and the sacrifices required to train at an Olympic level from a young age.

Her reflections on body image and the scrutiny of being visibly muscular.

Then we chat about the Paris Olympics- will these Games be the last time we see Lisa Carrington compete at this level?

This episode is packed with valuable lessons for anyone- whether you want some tips to make your own life better or just learn more about a Kiwi icon.

This was an honor. Anna has done a few podcasts before, but they have all been business related. This is her first ever podcast where we got to learn a bit more about the person behind the jaw-dropping success.

We covered all the important stuff like why she went to see Taylor Swift in Sydney even though she’s not a Swiftie.

Her childhood in Tokoroa and Cambridge

The early years of the Zuru in China

How her and All Black Ali Williams got together and his memorable first impression- what she loves and hates about him.

How they manage to blend families and run a household with five kids, and not spoil the kids. And so much more!

Anna is a total weapon. Not to mention bloody good fun and I really appreciated her time, so I hope you guys enjoy this conversation.

  • SAM CLARKE

On the morning of July 20th 2023, New Zealand was shocked by a shooting at Commercial Bay in Auckland’s CBD.

A man on electronically monitored bail took a gun to the construction site where he was working. He killed two colleagues with a shotgun, wounded seven other people, including a police officer, and then killed himself.

Sam Clarke, a husband and father, was shot that day. But he is not included in that list of victims.

Sam was working his dream job as a member of the NZ police Armed Offenders Squad when he was hit in the helmet by a bullet from the gunman. It was a job he loved, but a job he had to turn his back on because it nearly cost him his life.

This is part of his story.

In vivid detail he talks about the morning of July 20 and how it played out from the perspective of an on-duty cop.

Dealing with a concussion and struggling to reassure his loved ones, he was ok in the immediate aftermath.

  • Teuila Blakely is a total bad-ass and this was such a treat.

You may know her from her work on the old music channel C4, or Shortland Street, Bro-Town, Sione's Wedding or even DWTS or a zillion other things.

But this is less about her career and more about her journey- some pivotal moments that have shaped her personal and professional life.

From the challenges of being raised by a very tough mum, to then becoming a teenage solo-mum, humiliating experiences with racism, her beautiful friendship with her ex-fiancé Oscar Kightely, how she went from McDonalds to movies and so much more. Including THAT snap-chat incident.

Teuila is a genuine trailblazer, and it was an honor to have her share some of the less glamourous aspects of her life.

She is as authentic as it gets and an open book.
