Mary Denholm is an accomplished runner with an impressive list of accolades. She qualified for the U.S. Olympic marathon trials in 2020 and 2024 after years of training and participating in marathons following her collegiate career as an athlete, which wasn't easy. In today's episode, we briefly discuss her journey to success. Mary is an overall superstar, and I enjoy working with her as my run coach. During our chat, we talked about training, coaching, lessons learned, and her career in training. She is one of the hardest-working individuals I know in the sport, and she's just getting started. Through her years of ebbs and flows with the marathon and everything in between, Mary has inspired me and many others to keep chasing goals, pushing limits, and breaking boundaries. She's currently training for an ultramarathon, and I can't wait to see what she tackles next in her journey! If you're a runner who's hesitant to take a leap of faith and set that next big goal, this episode is a must-listen. It will leave you feeling inspired, motivated, and eager to tackle that stretch goal. The sky's the limit! Kristy Baumann is a Registered Dietitian from St. Paul, Minnesota, a 12x marathon runner, wife and mom to a 2 and 5 year old. She helps runners learn how to fuel properly to support their training and have a healthy relationship with food.
For years, she thought she was fueling well as a runner. But, found herself feeling sluggish on runs, having headaches and nausea after long runs, and experienced stomach issues and muscle cramps on race day.
She was focused on becoming “fat adapted”, always trying to manage her weight to run faster, and followed food rules. Food was constantly on her mind and she had a big sweet tooth. These were all signs of underfueling that resulted in recurring injuries and a poor relationship with food. It wasn't until she began to change her mindset around food, understand the science of nutrition and how the body works that she was able to learn to fuel properly, feel more energized and improve her running.
Now, she is on a mission to spread the message that restricting food and following fad diets is not the answer. Having a positive relationship with food is the foundation of fueling well as a runner.
I had such a fun time chatting with Kristy on the show, and I look forward to sharing the excellent advice, wisdom, and expertise discussed in this show with the world!

Hey there, runners and fitness enthusiasts! Welcome to the fourth episode of the Ask Alli Spin-Off, where we dive deep into training and running. I'm your host, Coach Alli, and I'm here to guide you on this journey to help you reach your fitness goals.
Today's episode of 'Ask Alli' takes a turn after viewing the rerun of the U.S. Olympic Marathon Trials and recapping the race, learnings, and takeaways for all of us to apply to our running training! I share my biggest takeaways and lessons for ALL of us to apply to our runs, to stay process-oriented, and to learn to love the journey, not the outcome of one race. There are some wins to celebrate! Congratulations to three women who made the Olympic Team: Fiona O'Keeffe Wins The U.S. Olympic Marathon Trials in her First-Ever Marathon, followed by Emily Sisson and Dakotah Lindwurm.
And to two men, brothers, and training partners with guaranteed spots on the men's Olympic Team, too! Conner Mantz ran 2:07:48 at the 2023 Chicago Marathon, and Clayton Young tallied a time of 2:08:00 in Chicago.
I am so happy and proud of all of us, of our sport. I am still hysterically crying, just feeling all the emotions and loving how well these people ran their hearts out the way they did today.Thank you to everyone behind the scenes who made today's event possible and viewable for the public. Your hard work does not go unnoticed. We all appreciate it. I can't find a word for how I feel right now because inspiration doesn't do justice. 😭 I hope this episode leaves you feeling inspired and motivated to tackle your next goal, stay resilient, be open to facing controversy, and overcome your biggest fears to eliminate any self-doubt because you can. WE can.
Until next time!
