  • Leander Markisch, co-founder of Floy, joins the show. Floy are a radiology AI start-up based in Munich and they’ve already achieved incredible success.

Millions of routine scans happen every year, but oftentimes early signs of disease are extremely difficult for radiologists to pick up. Floy’s solution utilises AI to combat this issue, alerting the radiologist of potential abnormalities in the scan, paving the way to more proactive care.

What’s fascinating about Floy’s approach is their commercial strategy – their direct to patient approach puts the decision to use AI in the patient’s hands. Needless to say, this has been a huge success, with Floy picking up 14% of the German radiology market in their first 2 years.

    We discuss -

    - Leander's background and entrepreneurial mindset

  • Dr Alan Pitt, CEO of VitalChat, Professor of Neuroradiology at Barrow Neurological Institute and serial entrepreneur joins the show.

With decades of experience in healthcare, Alan is hugely passionate about making a difference.

Having witnessed the transition from film to filmless & an early adopter of PACs, Alan has had a front row seat to how technology has changed healthcare - positively and negatively.

Having made the successful transition from physician to entrepreneur, Alan knows what it takes to add real value in the space.

Founding several successful companies - including a successful exit of Excelsius Robotics - and advising many more, Alan understands the pitfalls (no pun intended) that start-ups have encountered over the years & has seen firsthand how tech can often be more of a hindrance than a help.

His passion for helping front-line workers is infectious, his mission of ‘bringing people together to manage the continuum of care’.

Realising how overburdened nurses & other front-line workers are, Alan’s now founded VitalChat who are reimagining the traditional hospital room, augmenting equipment on the ward with video & ambient intelligence to ease the burden

So many lessons in this one - how and perhaps more importantly how not to build innovation for healthcare.

  • Heart disease is the leading cause of death worldwide.

Diagnosis - especially in its early stages - is difficult, costly & time-consuming.

    Enter the power of AI.

Animesh Agarwal has been at the forefront of this burgeoning industry since 2019.

He founded NeuTrace, an AI-driven Cardiac electrophysiology platform - combining huge datasets to identify disease from abnormal heat rhythms. NeuTrace was then bought by Anumana to complement their own cardiac AI product suite, the company now making tremendous strides in the field.

Animesh talks about the new class of AI products that are emerging - products that don’t just improve what humans can already do; but products that do things we’ve never been able to.

Animesh & Anumana have been prolific in gaining FDA approval for their AI-driven products - 2 approved in the last year - and are harnessing the power of generative AI to achieve truly futuristic use-cases.

  • More and more AI products are being built for healthcare, but how are we ensuring safety?

After all, these tools are being used to impact the patient journey and this people's lives - safety and transparency are therefore paramount.

The regulatory guidelines are ever-moving and often complex, posing a tricky problem for AI vendors - how do they build and commercialize a success product in a notoriously challenging space whilst at the same time ensuring adherence to regulation?

This is where Enes Hosgor & his company Gesund.AI come in.

Enes is a seasoned entrepreneur who's no stranger to navigating the intricacies of regulated industries. His journey, from a successful exit with his ML-based company EEme in the electricity sector to learning the complexities of healthcare AI with CareSyntax, has led him to a crucial realization: healthcare AI lacks a robust, underlying infrastructure to ensure safety and compliance proactively.

This gap in the market birthed Gesund.AI, whose chief aim is to provide a secure, transparent platform that empowers AI vendors to validate their products independently and ensure regulatory compliance.

We discuss how Gesund's platform can turbo-charge safe and transparent AI development, their other offerings - including access to diverse datasets - and glean wisdom from Enes's rich experience as an entrepreneur in the space.

  • Angela Adams, CEO of Inflo Health and Kandice Garcia Tomkins, Quality Director at the American College of Radiology, join the show.

Collaboration between AI vendors and the healthcare system is key to implementing innovation in the space.

Vendors often wonder why their product is struggling to gain traction - maybe blaming the product itself, the commercial strategy or archaic infrastructure.

The real problem is the current state of play in radiology departments everywhere. Overworked, burnt out and behind on their schedule, front line workers don’t have the time for new technology. They’re too focused on getting through the day to spend time learning how to use a new piece of software.

Angela and Kandice have teamed up to solve this.

Through the ACR Learning Network, Kandice and the team are working on the ground, hand in hand with radiology departments to help them get into shape, instilling efficient processes and routines that allow them to enjoy their work again - and be far more amenable to AI solutions.

Angela and Inflo Health have developed a fantastic solution for imaging follow-ups, utilising AI to ensure follow ups aren’t missed, the story of which we discuss on the show. Angela has recognised that departments in their current state of burnout won’t be able to enjoy the full value of her product - like they’ve struggled with other tech - so has partnered up with Kandice and the ACR learning network to help radiology departments get it right from both sides.

An important conversation around the real state of play in radiology departments, and an optimistic message of hope for the future.
