Join Carlos as he explores Why do we lie to ourselves with Dr. Trivers.
Whether it’s in a cockpit at takeoff or the planning of an offensive war, a romantic relationship or a dispute at the office, there are many opportunities to lie and self-deceive—but deceit and self-deception carry the costs of being alienated from reality and can lead to disaster. So why does deception play such a prominent role in our everyday lives? In short, why do we deceive?
In his bold new work, prominent biological theorist Robert Trivers unflinchingly argues that self-deception evolved in the service of deceit—the better to fool others. We do it for biological reasons—in order to help us survive and procreate. From viruses mimicking host behavior to humans misremembering (sometimes intentionally) the details of a quarrel, science has proven that the deceptive one can always outwit the masses. But we undertake this deception at our own peril.Trivers has written an ambitious investigation into the evolutionary logic of lying and the costs of leaving it unchecked. Robert L. Trivers is a Professor of Anthropology and Biological Sciences at Rutgers University. He won the Crafoord Prize in Biosciences in 2007 for his fundamental analysis of social evolution, conflict, and cooperation. He lives in New Brunswick, New Jersey.

"Simon’s book is a lucid survey of the phenomenon..."
- Foreign Affairs
"Lone Wolf Terrorism is a wake-up call to those who view terrorism solely as a threat that comes from large groups acting through well-organized networks. This mistaken view often leads to the conclusion that fighting terrorism is like waging a war with large military units. Instead it is often more akin to a police action fighting the mafia or looking to catch an individual criminal. Understanding the threat from lone wolf terrorists greatly improves our ability to combat the threat that confronts us."- David L. Boren, former US senator, longest serving chairman of the US Senate Intelligence Committee, and current president of the University of Oklahoma
"Relying on a selective, but broad, gathering of case studies, Simon presents a lively and well-paced overview of a subject that is attracting increasing attention."- John Mueller, PhD, Ohio State University, coauthor of Terror, Security, and Money
"Jeffrey D. Simon has provided a most lucid, concise, revealing, and fascinating analysis of the lone wolf - an intermittent feature of modern terror since the 1880s. Simon, a well-known, serious, and respected scholar of terrorism, examines the various purposes lone wolves serve and the reasons they have become so difficult to deal with. In addition, he develops an interesting and useful strategy to cope with them. Everyone interested in terrorism will recognize the importance of this classic study."-David Rapoport, founder and coeditor of the Journal of Terrorism and Political Violence and author of The Four Waves of Modern Terror: An Essay in Generations
"This book is a must-read for anybody who wants to understand one of the foremost threats of our time. The narrative has elements of a mystery while providing insights into the nature of terrorism and ways to combat it. Jeffrey Simon has done a terrific service to academicians, policy makers, and the general public in this coherent and clear presentation about this important aspect of terrorism."-Richard Sandor, PhD, chairman and CEO of Environmental Financial Products, and author of Good Derivatives: A Story of Financial and Environmental Innovation
From the Hardcover edition.

We chat with Jan Harzan. Jan recently retired from IBM after 37 years in the Information Technology business. Jan’s interest in UFOs began at the age of 8 when he read an article on Donald Keyhoe and NICAP in Argosy magazine. Based on this and other research he and his brother did over the next two years, they made the decision to build a flying saucer believing that electromagnetic propulsion was the key to how these craft were able to travel such great distances. While in the process of doing this, they were visited by a real UFO, no more than thirty feet from them, with no visible means of propulsion other than making a humming noise, before shooting off over the horizon. This event profoundly changed their lives. As a result of this experience, Jan pursued finding the answer to the technology these craft display believing that a breakthrough would revolutionize transportation and energy on our planet. As part of his drive to find the answer, Jan attended UCLA School of Engineering and received his B.S. in Nuclear Engineering. After college, he was hired by IBM, thinking that only a company of IBM’s stature and funding in basic research could solve this problem. 37 years later, Jan is still looking for the answer to how all this works. As a member of the MUFON Business Board Jan has been instrumental in leading MUFON’s Strategic Planning, as well as creating the Case Management System (CMS) used for UFO reporting, tracking, and investigative follow-up. Jan currently resides in Newport Beach, California, with his wife, Annette, and their two children. Jan was named Executive Director of MUFON on August 1, 2013

Join Dr. Carlos and Andy as they discuss resilience for first responders with Dr. Stephanie Conn.
Dr. Conn began her career as a dispatcher/call-taker for police, fire, & ambulance service. She became a police officer, a member of the Critical Incident Stress Management and Peer Support Team. There, she gained valuable experience helping fellow first responders with their reactions to traumatic events, as well as the day-to-day wear and tear of the job.
Her dad was an officer for almost 40 years so I grew up a policeman's daughter. This experience helps me understand what it's like to be affected by the police member's work.
She is also been happily married to an officer for 14 years (and counting!). Again, this gives her another perspective, another source of understanding.
