  • In this episode, host Keith Woodward talks with players Zach Metsa, Sam Lipkin, Collin Graf, and Jacob Quillan for part three of their conversation. There is one topic and one topic only: the University of Minnesota game; down 2-0, and we pick up the conversation from there. Two words that will resonate “Banana Land” (translation: The game is tied finally after outshooting Minnesota in the third period). All your questions about the game will be answered, including the planned celebration Jacob was dreaming about the night before. Fifty minutes of pure hockey talk, it is the voices of four of the six players who were on the ice when the National Championship goal was scored and how it all happened.

  • In this episode, host Keith Woodward has a conversation with the Quinnipiac student athletes about a variety of topics. They talk about how they celebrated, their general thoughts on the game, and more. There's also a great conversation with Christophe Tellier, about how he score the first goal of the Minnesota game, where he outskated three players and Zach Metsa makes a perfect pass, just like he did in overtime. And stay tuned for the next episode, because we spend 50+ minutes on that game -- that’s not a typo! And that’s only about the three Quinnipiac goals.

  •  In this episode, host Keith Woodward talks with TJ Friedman, Zach Metsa, Rand Pecknold, and Aaron Brown, a risk management expert and hockey fan who co-authored a paper called Pulling the Goalie: Hockey and Investment Implications. He’s probably the closest thing to an expert on pulling the goalie that exists on the planet. His 12-page research document has a lot of facts, figures and math symbols, and we thought it would be a lot easier to talk to him. So to answer the question (at least from Quinnipiac’s perspective) about when the goalie should be pulled, Brown speaks!

  • In this episode, host Keith Woodward talks with players Zach Metsa, Sam Lipkin, Collin Graf, and Jacob Quillan for part two of their conversation. It’s onto the NCAA’s, and eventually the Frozen Four. The team gets a chance at redemption, playing the team they lost to last year, Michigan! This time the result is different. They talk about how student athletes respond to the social media world, and you'll hear about the game winning goal by Lipkin in the third period, followed by Metsa scoring to make it 4-2, and the Bobcats win 5-2. And they are off to the University of Minnesota.

  • In this episode, host Keith Woodward talks with three-time All-American Captain Zach Mesta, first year student-athlete and NHL seventh -round draft pick Sam Lipkin, Collin Graf who had an All-American season after transferring to Quinnipiac, and Jacob Quillan, who scored the game-winning goal in over-time on April 8, 2023. They talk about their origin stories in hockey, and how one of them wanted to attend college further down Whitney Avenue (Yale) but was never offered a spot. And then we start going through the season, starting with Zach being named captain and earning the respect and trust of his teammates. We follow up with summer work with Coach B and then the first big test -- North Dakota.

  • In this episode, host Keith Woodward talks with Rand Pecknold. You heard in Episode 1 how Rand was named coach in 1994, and how the program grew under his leadership. You will now hear about the beginnings, as we learn about the pivot points in the evolution of the program. The conversation begins with Rand as a young player in Massachusetts, New Hampshire, influenced by his dad, who also played the game. The conversation then migrates to the first couple of practices in 1994, and you must listen to the story about one of the players. Rand, as the 2023-24 season begins, he has a record of 615-337-103 and currently ranks first among all active NCAA Division I coaches in career victories and ninth all-time, which is impressive, because he started 1-12-1. Yes, he remembers that start.

  • In this episode, host Keith Woodward talks with Joe Dumais, associate head coach of the Quinnipiac Men’s Hockey team. Joe grew up in Maine and somehow made it to Quinnipiac and graduated in the 2006 class. Joe made some stops along the way before starting his eighth year in QU coaching this fall. In Tampa, he was the designer of the play that won the National Championship called “the Jet” and you are going to hear about its design, how often it works (hint: never), and why it worked against the University of Minnesota when overtime started. You are going to love it!

  • In this episode, host Keith Woodward talks to Corbs. Oh sorry, that’s his hockey nickname, lets be more formal. Keith talks with Mike Corbett, the assistant hockey coach and somewhat of a hockey lifer, who has experienced more than his share of dynamic hockey life. You’ll quickly get that sense as conversation unfolds. At one point a middle-aged (hope that’s okay Mike) coach starts to question his role in college hockey after two different programs shut down. He has many roles at Quinnipiac, and is soaking up all the positivity around the National Championship. Oh, and make sure you hear how Corbs knew Collin Graf when Collin was 15; you'll enjoy where the story picks up. And he thinks there's more growth for a very detailed Collin.

  • In this episode, host Keith Woodward talks about Team IMPACT and Michael Torello, who was diagnosed with Kernicterus as an infant, a type of brain damage that can cause athetoid cerebral palsy, hearing loss, and can cause problems with vision and teeth, and sometimes can cause intellectual disabilities, according to the Centers for Disease Control.
Carolyn and John Torello, and 2023-24 captain Jayden Lee, join the conversation to talk about Michael’s life, legacy, and how his presence has had long and deep connections to the Quinnipiac Men’s Hockey Team. Michael passed away in 2021 at the age of 15, but he left behind an incredible legacy rooted in the power of believing, which was a key part of Quinnipiac's championship season. And if you have ever made plane and hotel reservations from a parking lot after a game, The Torellos have a story for you. And we can’t resist a plug for www.oldbishopfarms.com in Connecticut, where the Torellos have a farm.

  • In this episode, Billy Mecca, Zach Metsa, and Chris Mascali join host Keith Woodward as they talk about the Hero’s Hat. The award was established in honor of those who risked or lost their lives following the terrorist attacks on Sept. 11, 2001. It remembers Joseph Mascali (FDNY/Staten Island 5), father of Quinnipiac alum Chris '05, Jenn '02 and Katie Mascali '14. The Heroes Hat, created by Quinnipiac Director of Athletics & Recreation Jack McDonald, was originally presented to the winner of the Quinnipiac and UConn season series during its first four years from 2001-02 to 2004-05. At the time of the award's inception, Quinnipiac head coach Rand Pecknold said, "It is our hope that the Heroes Hat be a Connecticut sports tribute to the many heroes and their families involved in the September 11th tragedy."

  • Host Keith Woodward talks with Colby Cohen from ESPN, who was on the 2009 Frozen Four All-Tournament Team and awarded the Most Outstanding Player of the Frozen Four that year. This most likely was because he  scored the overtime game-winning goal to win the National Championship in 2009. Hmmm… an overtime game-winning goal to win the National Championship, sounds familiar…. Colby was literally at ice level, and talks about that experience, as well as the game winner, some plays, and who could ever forget the Cohen/Coach impromptu embrace. Okay, it was a hug. Let’s say that hug has gotten a lot of mileage.

  • In this episode, host Keith Woodward talks with Former ECAC Commissioner Steve Hagwell and Senior Associate Athletic Director Billy Mecca about Quinnipiac’s entry into the ECAC, Division I hockey. They also talk about how a new building changed the landscape and helped the university clinch the deal to get into the ECAC league with the likes of Harvard, Yale, Princeton, and Dartmouth, and how Yale played a significant role in the process. And we'll hear from a player on what it's like to play in the ECAC.

  • In this episode Keith Woodward talks with Brijesh Patel, associate athletic director/director of athletic performance. There may be no other person in the Quinnipiac Men’s Hockey program that is appreciated by the student athletes more than “Coach B”. When overtime started during the NCAA National Championship game, John Buccigross on ESPN -- in front of over a million viewers -- said he might be the best strength and conditioning coach in college hockey -- and Coach B's phone blew up. This episode is a clinic on strength and conditioning -- it’s a tremendous listen. The student athletes love him, and you probably will also by the end of the episode.

  • Host Keith Woodward talks with Dr. Devin Markle, the clinical sport psychology coach at Quinnipiac University. As Dana White did with nutrition two episodes ago, Devin makes sure athletes have a clear mind and process all the ups and downs in a healthy way. Devin has the credentials to back it up: for three years she served as the co-director of mindset development at the Mamba Sports Academy (yes, affiliated with Kobe Bryant). She was responsible for training athletes of all ages and levels and implementing mental skills training with individuals. In addition, she helped design the NBA and NFL Pre-Draft Training Program while working with the Mamba Sports Academy. The players love Devin, and you will hear from Captain Zach Metsa and others about how vital Devin is to them. Roughly half the team talked to Dana before the National Championship game. It seems to have worked out okay!

  • In this episode, host Keith Woodward talks with Derek Schaedig who was Harvard University’s goalie and recently graduated. Derek wrote an article called “Down but Not Out.” It starts with “My name is Derek Schaedig. I am a goalie for the men’s hockey team at Harvard; I am a sophomore studying Psychology; I am a writer for The Crimson; and in April 2019, I was diagnosed with major depressive disorder, more commonly referred to as depression. I am not immune to mental illness, and neither are many student-athletes.”  This is a real example of what some athletes go through. And Derek had tremendous support from his teammates, classmates, coaches and parents, but there were some moments in his story that could have gone differently. Derek now works at the Mental Health Foundation of West Michigan where he is a program coordinator.
Derek’s resilience is one that you might think about sharing, if you know someone who is struggling. And stay to the end; Harvard beats Quinnipiac in a critical game where the Bobcats have a 6-on-4 advantage late in the third period (by the way Rand pulls the goalie, and it works!) and Jayden Lee scored less than a minute into the power play to tie the game at two with about six minutes remaining in the game. Derek didn't want to bring it up, but we talked about it.

  • Host Keith Woodward talks nutrition with Dana White; yup, that’s right we got Dana White to come on the show… oh, wait not the Dana White who is the President of Ultimate Fighting Championship. The other one. Let’s get back in focus. What’s the best recovery drink? The answer is pretty complicated. There is no such thing as a one-size-fits-all post workout beverage. Dana has lots of jobs and she loves her life. She is the nutritionist for the National Champion Quinnipiac Bobcat Men’s Ice Hockey Team. Okay, we undersold it a little. Dana White, MS, RD, ATC. Which means she has her master’s degree, and she is a registered dietitian & Certified Athletic Trainer. In this episode, Dana discusses the importance of healthy nutrition and how it’s her job to make sure “the boys” eat right. Collin Graf is a believer -- and he scored the game-tying goal of the National Championship game, and you’ll hear from him in this episode. Although not in the episode, Dana used to serve ice cream to this guy named Rand when she was an undergraduate student at Quinnipiac. Keith pressures Dana on what food isn’t great for recovery, and she gives an answer that might surprise you. All that and a bunch of more food/nutrition "talk” with Dana White. • When Quinnipiac University started its men’s hockey program in 1975, there were roughly 800 students on the Hamden, Connecticut campus. In this episode, host Keith Woodward talks with Jim Kennedy, Quinnipiac first hockey coach, who was hired without any coaching experience. And for some contrast to what the “big boys” were doing, Jim Warden, the most outstanding player of the 1975 Michigan Tech championship team, joins the conversation to talk about how he was recruited.
The differences are stark: Jim Warden was travelling all over the country as he was being recruited; Jim Kennedy's recruiting process consisted of going to a “big book” in the athletic department filled with high schools, and then, a form letter. That was just the tip of the iceberg for Division III coach. He dealt with students smoking weed, he collected dimes and quarters to make phone calls when the bus company had problems, and he hadn’t gone over what to do when the National Anthem came on. Bus drivers got lost, and uniforms got stolen. There was a lot of work to do for a full-time painter from New Haven. And Jim Kennedy’s team won the first game, and they stopped at Lum’s for dinner. We’d never heard of Lum’s before, either.

  • In this episode, host Keith Woodward talks with a bunch of players to get a sense of their work ethic and what it took to earn a spot on the Quinnipiac Men's Hockey team. Keith speaks with Jayden Lee, who was s named captain of the 2023-24 team; Anthony and Joey and Cippolone, brothers who started playing in their garage, which they scarred with their pucks and which their mom just fixed last year; CJ McGee, who was in Texas when Coach Pecknold called; and livari Rasanen, who came over from Finland and who had no idea where or what Quinnipiac was (Spoiler: He has a national championship, his brother who went to Boston College…. doesn’t); Noah Altman from California who was headed to Michigan – yup that Michigan – but as a regular student (no hockey); Christophe Fillion and Cristophe Tellier from just outside the Montreal area, came as a package (not officially), but they have been best friends since they were young kids.
Timothy Heinke and Victor Czerneckianair are first-year students who live 10 minutes from each other, and played against each other one-on-one when they were 7 years old. Victor lost. You'll hear these stories and more, as we learn about what drew them to Quinnipiac.
