  • Last fall, in the midst of pop culture’s ongoing obsession with all things “true crime,” Netflix’s American Vandal arrived just in time to set social media ablaze with one tantalizing question: Who drew the dicks? Like amateur documentarians Peter and Sam, viewers found themselves enamored not only by the show’s central mystery (uncovering the perpetrator of a costly, phallic prank), but the precision with which the series had satirized the genre itself. In this case study, join the creative team behind Vandal for a detailed look at the series from pitch, to development, to bonafide hit, as they discuss their own influences and fascination with the “true crime” genre.

Season 2 of American Vandal is streaming now on Netflix!

Episode Guests: Dan Perrault, Tony Yacenda, Dan Lagana, Joe Farrell

Moderator: Ben Blacker (The Writers Panel)

  • For LGBTQIA viewers, TV has long been a medium of binaries -- gay or straight; male or female; cisgender or transgender -- but the past few years have seen a swell of characters who aren’t so easily defined. • In the 45 years since Norman Lear faced off with standards & practices over Maude's “dilemma” (a first for the small screen), creatives have been fighting to de-stigmatize the female body and by extension, the right to choose by including birth control and abortion as more than just a "special episode." Primetime and Cable have seen major characters faced with a decision about sex and pregnancy, unplanned motherhood, and even onscreen abortions. While the topic remains a cultural, social and political pressure point, women are slowly seeing their experiences reflected back with urgency and empathy. Listen in as the creatives behind these stories discuss the challenges of tackling women’s reproductive health onscreen, the challenges and successes they experience, and why realistic depictions of choice are still so hard to come by.

  • From the opening moments of CBS’ prestige courtroom procedural The Good Wife, it was clear that Robert & Michelle King had arrived on network TV ready to jolt viewers awake with razor-sharp dissections of political, judicial, and media institutions. For seven 22-episode seasons, the series’ acclaimed writing, production, and performances pushed the boundaries of broadcast expectations, and their next endeavor -- sing-songy, aliens-invade-Capitol-Hill dramedy Braindead — only further cemented the Kings as one of TV’s most inventive and prescient writing duos (giving new extraterrestrial life to ‘80s earworm ‘You Might Think’ in the process). Now, at the conclusion of Season 2 of the CBS All Access flagship drama The Good Fight (with a Showtime series on the way), listen to these writers/executive producer/showrunners for a discussion on what this current moment in news/politics means for creatives, and what makes their singular brand of political observation and dark humor more timely than ever.

  • With Peak TV infinitely expanding the options for networks and platforms, the ""backend"" of television is shifting more than ever towards the importance of ""content ownership."" Historically, there have been major independent studios (Sony, Warner Brothers), and network-based studios (20th Century Fox, ABC Studios), but now there are emerging studios acting as a hybrid between traditional studio and production company, wearing many different hats in creating content that ends up on traditional broadcast, cable, and platforms. Listen to both sides as these executives discuss the current state of how TV is ending up on your screens, and where it could end up next year.
