Table Mountain is an iconic destination for South Africans and tourists alike. The national park that stretches beyond its slopes form the perfect playground for hikers, trail runners, and cyclists. In October 2017, though, the peaceful mountain park became a hunting ground and both predator and prey were human. The Showmax Original documentary, Original Sin: My Son The Killer is a tragic and fascinating deep dive into the murder of Andrea Venter. In addition to the themes of domestic violence, stalking, and intimate partner murder, the documentary also explores a mother's pain in acknowledging the role she may have played in her son's crime and her own tragic past. The Showmax Original Tracking Thabo Bester took viewers behind the public furore around an escaped convict and the glamourous doctor who allegedly aided him. In this companion podcast, I speak with two of the contributors to this compelling docuseries (well, three, if you count me...) to take a deeper dive into some of the unanswered questions. In 1997, a shocking intimate partner murder shook the country. The victim had feared for her life and then been killed with an axe in her own home. The offender was known, but it would be the outcome of the case that, even today, is questionable. Introducing the "So What?" podcast
If I say “Ruda Landman” I’m pretty sure that for most South Africans the Carte Blanche music and Sunday nights come to mind. For years, Ruda was, along with her colleagues at Carte Blanche, the source of hot topic reporting and important insights, and just because she’s no longer on the show, doesn’t mean that incredible journalistic brain has stopped assessing the world in its unique way. Considering her husband JP Landman is political economic analyst, I’m pretty sure the big issue delving continues to this day in the Landman home. Imagine what that dinner table conversation is like! Well, the Landmans thought their dinner table conversations were pretty interesting too, so they started recording them, and now, it’s a podcast!

The first 11 episodes were literally recorded around their dinner table so you’ll hear a little difference in the audio quality when they move into studio conditions, but the conversations and insights are incredible throughout. I highly recommend finding the So What podcast wherever you listen to True Crime South Africa and get that familiar voice back into your ears. When a police officer was arrested for a string of "killsurance" murders executed on her own family members and loved ones, South Africa was aghast at the enormity of the killer's deeds and the coldness of her crimes.
