The analysis done in Ways of Seeing has become so canon that it's hard to believe it was ever radical. Berger argued for idea that fine art, specifically post-renaissance European oil painting, with some exceptions for real genius, has historically been first and foremost a vehicle for symbolizing and justifying wealth, and that this has has profound effects on how we see wealth, power, capital, and of course, art.
We discuss our reactions to the book, and how some things have changed in the 50-odd years since its publication.
The editing on this episode is a bit rough at times, we're still figuring that out. Thanks for listening! Hit us up @yousufferpod on twitter and gmail. -
This episode is about the book Capitalist Realism, a critical text which examines and challenges the assumptions underlying some of the economic and political realities of modern life since the late 1970s.
We decided to try a new format in this episode, with a separate lecture-style summary about the book before we sit down to discuss it together.
If you've read Capitalist Realism and don't want to hear the summary, skip ahead to 17:35. -

We discuss Females, by Andrea Long Chu.
This is our first episode, and could be better. We'll be experimenting with planning and preparation and recording for the next few.
Thanks for listening! And apologies for misusing the word "frisson" in the intro. We'll do better next time.
