He remains true to himself, embracing authenticity and transparency in his artistry—a quality that resonates deeply with his growing fan base. His EP, Feels Like Home, is a testament to his unwavering dedication and creativity, showcasing his artistic evolution. In 2023 Nick released his first full-length album, Junior Year, which culminates Nick's musical evolution and personal growth, reflecting on his experiences and showcasing Nick's versatility as a songwriter and performer.

Despite the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic, Nick seized the opportunity to establish his record label, Whiskey Neat Records, and construct a personal studio. With each release, Nick strives to elevate his music, delivering tracks ranging from introspective to upbeat, infused with his signature humor and charm. As he looks toward the future, Nick Hickman's trajectory promises even greater success, fueled by his relentless passion and commitment to his craft.

  • Back in the 1940's, 50', and into the 1960's, the recording studio was rather a simple affair. Typically one or a few mics would be used to record an artist or a band, with all of the members in the studio at the same time. Then in the 1970's, the recording studio changed, and became a structured environment, where each member could be isolated, with a selection of microphones recorded onto multiple tracks.

Things have changed since then, and the viability of the recording studio, and its status has changed dramatically. On the show today is Steve Creech, who is an industry recognized mastering engineer and record producer. He shares his insight with records to the future of the studio, and the up and coming engineer. He shares with us his experience with the difference of perception versus perspective when it comes to the recording studio and its environment.

  • The music business is probably more so like the Wild, Wild West these days, than it ever has been, even going back to the 1960’s. Joining us on the show today is the legendary music industry veteran Charlie Peacock, who is a multi Grammy winner, along with being a multiple genre Billboard chart topping music producer, composer, and recording artist. He has been named by Billboard’s encyclopedia of record producers, as one of the 500 most important music producers in popular music history. He has produced music for film, television, including “A Walk To Remember”, music for “12 Years A Slave”, along with music for the AMC drama Series “Turn - Washington Spies”. He has released more than 27 albums going back to 1982, and is releasing his new album “Every Kind of Uh Oh”. He also has a memoir coming out in 2025 titled “Roots & Rhythm - A Life In Music”.

Also joining Charlie in the studio is his son Sam Ashworth, who in his own right is a notable producer, singer, songwriter, and composer.

If anyone understands the wild, wild west in the music business, it's definitely Charlie and Sam.

  • When it comes to such simple things as communication, networking, and even relationships, there are three basic skills you need to remember. You need to build upon the relationship. You also need to maintain them, and work towards them growing. Joining us in the studio is music industry veteran Lyn Stevens who is an award winning photographer, who combines her love of photography with her passion for music. From that, she has learned the ability to network among industry peers, and shares her insight with our listeners. While on the subject, we also discuss documenting your career with photography, and how important it is in the bigger picture.

Since her days as a producer at WIBA-FM and Morning DJ & Country Music Director WDUX in Wisconsin, Lyn has always had the bug to work in the music industry. Working in radio provided Lyn the opportunity to meet and interview legendary performers such as Merle Haggard, Ray Price, Charlie Daniels, Loretta Lynn, and The Kentucky Headhunters among many others.

After moving to Nashville in 2009, her photography "hobby" started catching the eye of local performers. In 2012, the door was opened as Lyn was honored to have 3 of her photos on display as part of the Cameras and Community in Action Project at The Frist Center for The Visual Arts. Her work went on to be featured in Country Weekly, Billboard Magazine and the Nashville Music Guide.

In late 2014, she was asked by country legends, Little Texas, to shoot the photos for their album, "Young for A Long Time," which garnered her the award for "Best Visual Art" at the 2015 Nashville Independent Music Awards.

She added the title, “International Photographer” to her resume, after documenting a Blues/Rock tour to Australia in 2016 and another tour to Iceland in 2018. Her work has since been seen on television in Australia and in newspapers and magazines throughout Europe.

She approaches photography as a documentarian, based off the strong belief that she is documenting future history, in the present-day moment.

  • It is a significant milestone for the Charlie Daniels Patriot Awards Dinner, which will be held on September 11, 2024, at City Winery Nashville. The awards dinner is a program of The Charlie Daniels Journey Home Project, a 501c3 that supports military veterans, first responders and their families. TCHJHP has raised more than $4 million for these organizations.

Corlew shares his story of how he got into the business, first working at a record store, then becoming a roadie for Charlie Daniels, before becoming his manager for the next 30+ years of Charlie’s career.

  • On this special episode of "Between The Notes" edition here on The Business Side of Music, show contributor Jack Sharkey and host Bob Bender go on a rant, discussing the value of the larger venue concert, and why some acts are having a difficult time selling out these days. Are they (the artist) still viable? Is the cost (and the unpredictable weather when its outdoors) worth going to stand around with hopefully thousands of your closest friends in a partially filled event? Jack and Bob delve into why some acts should no longer find themselves anticipating performing at large venues, when its difficult to put butts in the seats, and the scaling back to smaller venues such as auditoriums or theaters (or clubs) might make more financial sense.... in spite of their egos.

  • The audience is in their seats. The lights dim, and the artist takes the stage. For the next 90 minutes or more, the show goes on without a hitch. But in order to get there, production for the show began to take shape, weeks, if not months earlier. But how does this happen, and who’s in charge? Enter the Production Manager. This individual is in charge of everything from ensuring that the stage, sound, and lights are set up properly for the concert, to the numerous emails and phone calls to guarantee that there are no problems (or mistakes). In many ways, managing a tour is similar to running a business. There are employees and budgets to look after. The workload and responsibilities are extraordinary. And the demands can be overwhelming. Without efficient work practices in place, the stress and lack of sleep make it impossible to thrive in the world of tour and production management.

Production Manager and author of the book “The Efficient Hustle”, Lucas Meek shares stories from the road, explaining the inner workings of the touring business, what it takes to be a successful Production or Tour Manager, and everything needed to ensure that the show goes on without a hitch.

  • Upwards of 200,000 songs or more are uploaded daily to many digital providing streaming services. It becomes a crowded field rather quickly, and in many instances, your music can get lost in all of what is often called “white noise”. As streaming catalogs continue to grow in size and depth of music, DSP’s (digital service providers) are beginning to remove music that has had zero impact on listeners. In another words, they want music that will resonate with their audience.

As we continue our annual “Music Biz 2024” Conference Series, in the studio with us today is Gitte Bendzulla, who is the C.O.O. of the music platform, Deezer. Deezer is a French founded, French headquartered digital streaming service providing music for the European, African, and South American markets. France (especially Paris) is considered the entrance to the European music market, and Deezer is at the head of the streaming services providing an opening for new music for the rest of Europe, and beyond.

  • With so many artists selling off their catalogs these days, is there even room for the independent artist that may have a substantial collection of songs to be a part of this new trend? Is that catalog worth money? How does one go about finding out what its "retail" value might be? Lior Tibon, who is the co-founder and CEO of Duetti, dropped into the studio during the MusicBiz 2024 Conference to share what its all about, how it can make sense for the "Indie" artist, and what the potential outcome might be.

  • As a songwriter, it's never been more important to track your songs, and receive payment for your efforts, as it is now. But where do you start, and where do you go to find where the royalty payments may be waiting for you? It's not always up to the PRO’s (Performing Rights Organizations) to find your money and hand it out to you. In simple terms, you need to be paid for what you create. It can be challenging, and require some hard work, but it is worth it if you know how to navigate the various outlets that are available.

There are at least 13 royalty payment portals that many songwriters don’t know about. Such entities as “The Music License Collective” are out there, but if you as the creator of the song don’t know about them, and have the ability to access them, you’re missing out on collecting your money. Nancy Deckant, who is the founder and CEO of Discover Sooner, along with being the co-author of the book “The Songwriters Guide” shares some insight and direction on where you can go to ensure you’re getting all the money you earned
 and deserve.

  • The Music Store. Also known as the social gathering place for musicians to gather at, check out the latest musical gear, purchase their goods such as guitars, drums, strings, and sticks. But the traditional music store is much more than that. Its a locale where musicians both new and seasoned can get together and share their chops, collect new ideas, and exchange phone numbers and email addresses. It's where bands are created. But with the recent announcement of the closing of one of the largest music store chains in the Country, the selection of choices has diminished somewhat. But has it? We still have across the nation and the world, the traditional mom and pop music stores, still opening their doors every day, competing against the online internet based music retailers.

Jack Sharkey and Bob Bender bring another special edition of the "Between The Notes" series here on The Business Side of Music, discussing the demise of the traditional big box music stores, and how its now more important than ever for today's musician to seek out and put their hard earned cash into the local music retail establishments when purchasing new music gear.

  • Celebrating his 30th anniversary in the music industry with his band “The Nadas”, singer/songwriter, and founding member Jason Walsmith joins us in the studio to talk about his career. Jason has spent his adult life as a career musician, storyteller, photographer, traveler, and adventurer.

The celebrated folk-Americana act The Nadas have amassed a loyal and dedicated following over the past three decades for their engaging live shows and distinctive 70s-meets-90s sound. Blending twangy, Stones-era “country honk” with raw, alt-rock energy and wistful, folk-leaning melodies, their music is as alive as it is authentic. Over 30 years of making music together, The Nadas have shared the stage with The Beach Boys, Bon Jovi, Big Head Todd and Barenaked Ladies, been inducted into the Iowa Rock ‘n’ Roll Hall of Fame, sold over 300,000 albums (even in a time when you can’t buy a CD player), earned praise from a wide range of major publications, and written the theme song for their hometown—twice.

During his musical journey, inspired by the case of an old family heirloom that has stood the test of time, Jason has taken the elements of the design to create the heritage designed, soft-sided guitar case created to protect your favorite guitars through all of life’s adventures: heavy dry waxed cotton duck material that is naturally water repellent and durable, a quilted cotton felt interior and features high quality leather and brass zippers.

    Interesting tidbit of information here
Jason’s band “The Nadas” was named “The Best College Band You’ve Never Heard Of” by Playboy Magazine in 2001.

  • As one of 39 kids of the world famous Osmond family (who sold over 100 million records), our guest Nathan Osmond grew up on the set of his uncles TV Show during their heyday. He himself went on to form another generation of Osmond singers, who toured with such 90’s acts as New Kids On The Block, Naughty By Nature, and Colour Me Badd. The son of Alan Osmond, he and his brothers moved to Branson Missouri, where they performed at the Osmond Family Theater. While there, Nathan became influenced by Country Music.

Nathan shares his life story, the ups and downs, his performance in the Tim Rice and music Andrew Lloyd Webber’s production of “Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat”, and wound up in Nashville writing with the likes of Dean Sams (“Lonestar”) Steve Dorf, and Tony Asher. He shares what it took for him to be successful in the music business without relying on the good name of his family but at the same time seeking advice from his uncle and aunt, Donny and Marie Osmond to learn more aspects of the business end of the music industry.
