  • In this episode we bring you my conversation with Lee Smith about Moral Distress in Education.

    With a few stints back in Canada over the years, Lee has been mostly working in and leading schools internationally since 1996. In Australia, Taiwan, Korea, and China, he has been a Literature and Humanities teacher, curriculum coordinator, vice-principal, and principal. He has been affiliated with Canadian-accredited schools abroad, specifically British Columbia offshore schools, for twelve years. In his current role as Offshore School Representative, Lee acts as the liaison between five BC offshore schools in China and the British Columbia Ministry of Education and Child Care. He started his PhD studies at the University of Alberta in 2019, and is now nearing completion of his dissertation. His doctoral study seeks to understand how fifteen principals of Canadian-accredited schools abroad make sense of morally distressing situations within the context of their own professional identities.

  • This episode features a conversation with Dr. Ryan Dunn. Dr. Dunn was the very first guest on this podcast and I wanted to speak with him again as he recently came out with a new book.

    Dr. Ryan Dunn has considerable experience within education and has advised and collaborated with schools and districts across Australia, the USA and Canada. He has worked extensively with school leaders in Victoria, South Australia, Queensland, New South Wales and Alberta to support leadership development at a system, network and school level.

    As a senior lecturer at the University of Melbourne his work focuses on teacher professional learning, educational leadership, mathematics, and middle level leadership. His latest book co-authored with Professor John Hattie, Developing teaching expertise: A guide to adaptive professional learning design, focuses on the effectiveness of adaptive approaches for school improvement. Ryan recently delivered the keynote presentation for the Victorian Department of Education Principal Forums on leading improvement in complex times.

  • Carolyn Cameron is back in our first episode featuring a previous guest. If you remember way back to episode 18, Dr. Cameron is an educator with over 30 years of experience within the K–12 public school system. As an administrator of a new middle school, she brought powerful teaching practises to her role as a school leader.

    She has presented at local, provincial, national and international conferences on the power of collaboration to lead meaningful student learning within a school community. As a school principal, she was a recipient of the provincial excellence in teaching award. A lifelong learner, she recently earned her Doctor of Education degree from the University of Calgary. Her professional experience includes serving as a leadership consultant for Alberta Education and the Galileo Educational Network. Currently, when not travelling, she works as a sessional instructor for school leadership programs at the University of Calgary and the University of Lethbridge.

  • Last week, we talked about the importance of personal values. We spoke about how as an individual, it can be helpful to list your values. If you have not listened to this episode, please go and take a listen. This week will build on where we left off.
    This week, we shift to the importance of organizational values and the interplay between personal values and organizational values.

    What - The people involved in an organization should know and construct the organizational values.
    Why - The people in an organization need to see themselves in the organization, they need to participate in the selection of what is important. This will lead to better outcomes as people will be happier, make better decisions, work harder, and stay longer.

Rae has worked in education for over 20 years from being an EA to teacher, administrator, Principal, Supervisor, Senior Manager at Alberta Education and now a consultant.   • Armand Doucet is one of the world’s foremost pracademics and teachers in education for this Digital Age. He is a leader, inspirational speaker, coach, columnist, and author. He has spoken to tens of thousands of teachers on every continent and key international organizations. He has received the Governor General Award for Teaching Excellence in History (2017) and the Canadian Prime Minister’s Award for Teaching Excellence (2015) among other awards.

    We need to apologize and during the interview we had some internet connection issues. It is a bit choppy in some spots, but we think it still works. We were both at home, with our kids, so you can hear some familiar noises if you are an early years teacher of children playing.

  • Dr. Steven Katz who is a faculty-member in Applied Psychology & Human Development at the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education (OISE) of the University of Toronto (UT), where he teaches in the Child Study and Education graduate program. He is the recipient of the OISE/UT-wide award for teaching excellence. In addition, he is the Director of the research, evaluation, and capacity-building firm, Aporia Consulting Ltd.

    Dr. Katz has a Ph.D. in human development and applied psychology, with a specialization in applied cognitive science. His areas of expertise include cognition and learning, teacher education, networked learning communities, leading professional learning, evidence-informed decision-making for school improvement, and leadership for system change. He has received the Governor General’s medal for excellence in his field, and has been involved in research and evaluation, professional development, and consulting with a host of educational organizations around the world. He is an author of several best-selling books, including Leading Schools in a Data-Rich World, Building and Connecting Learning Communities, Intentional Interruption, and The Intelligent, Responsive Leader.

  • In this episode we speak with Andrew Baxter. Andrew has worked in School Based and Community Mental Health for over 18 years. During his time with Alberta Health Services, he has provided direct treatment for students from K – 12 as well as consultation for their families and their teachers. He currently serves as the Lead for the Alberta Mental Health Literacy Project which is rolling out in school boards across the province. He has conducted Mental Health Literacy trainings across Canada and assisted in other provincial/territorial Mental Health Literacy initiatives. In addition to acting as a consultant to school boards, Andrew provides training to parents, pre-service teachers, health care providers and community partners. Andrew continues to serve on the School Based Mental Health Quality Improvement Committee in Calgary. His educational background is in social work and psychology.

  • This episode features Katherine Mann, Director of Education Services for Parkland School Division. Katherine started her career in 1992 following a Bachelor of Education degree with Distinction from the University of Alberta. Her first year was serving students as a Grade 4-9 French teacher and Grade 8 Language Arts before making the move the following year to Duffield School where she stayed for 12 years teaching a variety of grades and subjects. She led choral and music productions and coached volleyball, basketball and track & field. Katherine then moved into Administration as Assistant Principal and Principal at different schools. Katherine earned her Masters in Education with a focus on leadership in June 2008. She has extensive experience in the areas of Instructional Leadership and has interest in a number of areas, such as assessment and reporting.

  • In this episode we speak with Dr. Jim Brandon, Associate Dean of Professional & Community Engagement and Associate Professor at the Werklund School of Education at the University of Calgary. In his teaching career, he served 23 years in the superintendency in two school districts, worked as a principal for nine years, a vice-principal for four, and began as a secondary social studies teacher.

    Jim works extensively with several of the provincial educational partners in Alberta. He is a past president of the College of Alberta School Superintendents (CASS) and served as its Director of Leadership Capacity Building from 2009 through 2011. His two books and a number of recent papers focus on school system leadership in the Alberta context. Dr. Brandon is also a Life Member of the Alberta Teachers’ Association (ATA), has conducted two recent research studies for the Association, and currently serves on two of its provincial committees.

  • This episode features Etienna Moostoos-Lafferty. Etienna was born and raised in Grande Prairie Alberta. Her family is from the Sturgeon Lake Cree Nation in Treaty 8 territory. Etienna has teaching experience both on and off-reserve, and also in public and Catholic school systems. She spent 4 years working for an Indigenous perspective school with the Calgary Board of Education where she learned the importance of culture and language in Indigenous education.

    Etienna Was called back to Amiskwacîwâskahikan (Edmonton) and has worked provincially as an Indigenous Education consultant helping to develop and implement professional development sessions aimed at promoting reconciliation through teacher education. Etienna has created resources for many provincial organizations which help teachers better understand topics such as Residential Schools, Myths and Stereotypes of Indigenous people, progression of the TRC, Digging into the TQS and LQS Applying and Developing about First Nation, Métis and Inuit people and finally, treaty relationships.

    Today, Etienna works part time consulting and is also the Indigenous Education Coach for Evergreen Catholic Schools. She is completing her masters at the University of Alberta and additionally, has worked as an assistant researcher.

  • This episode features Dr. Jenni Donohoo, who is a three-time, best-selling author and professional learning facilitator with more than 20 years experience in leading school change.

    Jenni completed her doctorate in 2010. Her dissertation focused on fostering metacognition in adolescent students. In addition to her writing and consulting work, Jenni is on contract with the Council of Ontario Directors of Education. In this role she works alongside system and school leaders in order to improve the quality professional learning and collaboration in schools and districts. Jenni has also designed and taught Experienced Principals’ Courses for the Ontario Principals’ Council and Additional Qualification courses for the University of Windsor. Jenni is the past president of Learning Forward Ontario.

    Recently, in an interview when John Hattie was asked about whose work he reads and recommends, he named Jenni Donohoo in a short list of up and coming educational leaders.

  • Our guest this episode is Scott Onuczko, Communication Technology teacher at Spruce Grove Composite High School in Alberta. Scott uses both traditional tools and the latest technology to help students explore their creative sides, enhance their design and production skills, explore interests outside the curriculum and change the world … one personally designed and silkscreened t-shirt at a time.

    Breaking away from the traditional teacher model, Scott has designed his classes around his students' passions, areas of ability and learning needs. He recognizes that in the rapidly changing field of communication technology, he cannot always be the expert in the room, he acts as a guide for students as they solve problems and help each other. He won a Prime Minister's Award for Teaching Excellence in 2016.
