Does sperm really matter? If you've been tuning in to all of the posts this week for "Super BALLS Week" you'll know that of course it matters! It truly does take both sperm and an egg to make a baby. Today I'll review the sperm question a bit, and explain why it matters. AND, I'll give you a lot more info about how to improve sperm quality. Here's the thing: I know that guys want to hear what they want to hear. They have selective listening. I'm not kidding when I tell you that I had someone email me recently and say "My husband's sperm tested out GREAT, and when we went over the results with the doctor we heard two different things. He thinks he heard our doctor say that it means he can just keep drinking, smoking, and enjoying marijuana and doesn't need to make any lifestyle changes. I heard something very different, which was that he should still cut back until we are pregnant. Can you help settle this for us?" And while it's an unpopular answer (at least with the guys), my response is: Men should cut back or abstain from drinking, and smoking (marijuana too) if you're TTC. Here are a few of the things I suggest to anyone bringing the sperm side of the equation to the baby making situation: - consider freezing your own sperm for future use when you are young. - get in the best shape of your life if you're trying to conceive. Sperm matters, and men's health is directly related to their sperm quality. - take some prenatal vitamins. Yes, really. Many of the same supplements that I recommend for egg quality also are great for sperm quality. - cut back on smoking, drinking, and drug use. Marijuana negatively impacts sperm. - don't cook your balls: avoid hot tubs, using your laptop on your lap, and other situations that may create high temps for the area.
- find ways to cut back on stress, if you live a stressful life. Mindfulness and meditation are great for everyone.

I started throwing Egg Freezing parties as a fun way for people to learn about fertility. There is humor. There is honest talk. Mostly, I throw them because I want every person to be empowered with knowledge about their fertility. It’s really as simple as that. Egg Freezing parties are safe and surgery-free gatherings of women (and sometimes men) to learn more about the process of freezing your eggs (or sperm). Beyond that, we talk in general about fertility and how every woman (and man) can take a proactive role in preserving theirs.
I started Egg Freezing parties for a simple reason. Older women were in my office struggling with fertility only to wish they had known more when they were younger. Had someone told them to get their fertility levels checked and to consider the option of preserving their eggs they most certainly would have.
I don’t want to hear years from now that women wished they’d known more about their fertility. This is what drives me to throw parties to make sure everyone knows they have options! I’m an egg rescuer, egg whisperer and fertility myth buster!

Today, I’m excited to be joined by two members of the CryoFuture team: CEO and senior embryologist Sean Pae and Chief Operating Officer, Ginger Huang. CryoFuture is a cryogenic lab that stores frozen eggs and embryos in the San Francisco Bay Area, and we're talking basics here: how a cryo facility works, security considerations, and how their lab makes sure that there are no mixups.
I know that many of my patients have a lot of questions about how embryos, eggs, and sperm are stored, and their safety, so we're playing a quick game of "safe or not safe." (spoiler because I don't want to stress anyone out who is trusting a cryobank with their own precious cargo: they'll be safe.)
You'll hear us talk about floods, fire, earthquakes, and how specimens will be safe in the case of a car accident while being transported. You can tune in to learn more about the measures that CryoFuture takes to ensure safety, and how they monitor your cargo in transport. It's a fascinating look behind the scenes of how they handle things!
Thank you so much for joining me, Sean and Ginger! I love working with you and love the care you extend to my patients and anyone going through IVF in the Bay Area.

Professor René Almeling, a Yale University sociologist and author of Guynecology: The Missing Science of Men’s Reproductive Health, joins to discuss the overlooked history of male reproductive health and why it has not received the same medical attention as female reproductive health.
Professor Almeling shares insights from her research on how societal and medical perceptions of male fertility have evolved over time. The conversation explores disparities in reproductive care between men and women, the role of cultural expectations in shaping these differences, and how medicine has historically focused on female fertility while largely ignoring the reproductive contributions and risks for men.
Topics discussed include:
The historical reasons why male reproductive health has been under-researched and underfunded How scientific advancements in fertility have primarily focused on women, despite evidence that male fertility is equally important The long-standing assumption that reproduction is a female responsibility and how that impacts fertility treatments today How sperm health is influenced by environmental exposures, lifestyle choices, and overall health What needs to change in the medical field to ensure men receive proper reproductive careRead the full show notes on my website.
