  • Has it ever been so dark you couldn't see anything at all, not even your own hand in front of your face? In Chinese there's a very similar expression. In the spirit of Halloween,

let's get a bit dark for this minisode, and upgrade our Chinese from 太暗了 to 暗得伸手不见五指吧!

(Shēnshǒu bùjiàn wǔzhǐ)

Can't see your hand in front of your face

    Vicky's Translation:

Suǒyǐ nǐ zài Shànghǎi de shíhòu, céngjīng qù dàoguò yīgè hěn yǒuyìsi de kāfēi guǎn. Zhège kāfēi guǎn de míngzì hěn yǒuyìsi, jiàozuò Hēi'àn Kāfēi Guǎn. Tā qíshí shì yīgè cānguǎn, ránhòu nǐ jìnqùle yǐhòu, fāxiàn lǐmiàn shēnshǒu bùjiàn wǔzhǐ. Nà rén zěnme chīfàn ne?

So when you were in Shanghai, you went to a very interesting cafe. The name of this cafe is also very interesting - it was called Dark Cafe. It is actually a restaurant, and when you go in, you find that it is pitch dark inside. How do people eat?

Suǒyǐ nǐ chī de shì xīcān, ránhòu nǐ kàn bùjiàn, shénme dōu kàn bùjiàn, zhǐ néng mōzhe chī. Nà zhège cānguǎn de fúwùyuán, tāmen de gōngzuò hěn nán zuò ba?

So you eat Western food, and you can't see anything, you can only eat by touch. Then the waiters in this restaurant, their job is difficult, right?

Zhège hěn yǒuyìsi, jiùshì shuō cānguǎn lǐ de fúwù shēng dōu shì mángrén, suǒyǐ tāmen duìyú zhège gōngzuò huánjìng hěn shúxī, ránhòu duìyú gùkè lái shuō, jiùshì yīgè rén dā zài lìngwài yīgè rén de jiānbǎng shàng, xiàng kāi yī liàng huǒchē yīyàng, bǎ měi gè kèrén dài dào zìjǐ de wèizhì shàng. Tīng qǐlái hěn yǒuyìsi, wǒ yě hěn qídài, xiǎng qù zhèyàng yījiā cāntīng qù tǐyàn yīxià.

This is very interesting. The waiters in the restaurant are all blind, so they are very familiar with the working environment. For the customers, one person puts his hand on the other person's shoulders like a train and are led to their seats. It sounds very interesting. I want to go to such a restaurant to experience it.

  • The Benefits of Drinking Coffee

    The Benefits of Drinking Coffee

Most people drink coffee to keep themselves energetic. But in fact, some people drink coffee to achieve better results in fitness. Many people who work out drink multiple cups of coffee every day. This is because caffeine can improve the body's anaerobic exercise capacity and allow the body to enter an exercise state more quickly. This change may not have much effect on the average person, but for fitness fanatics, drinking coffee can greatly improve their fitness efficiency. However, except for people who work out, doctors do not recommend that ordinary people try to drink multiple cups of coffee a day for other purposes. The human body can only consume caffeine at a limited rate. The caffeine that an average person ingests by drinking a cup of coffee will most likely still be in one’s system the next morning.

    Translation:
Lin Meng: I recently read a book about weight loss.
Zhang Nan: Does it introduce any good weight loss methods?
Lin Meng: No. However, it introduces some common weight loss myths. It says people should not lose weight by eating less. Because if there is a sudden big change in eating habits, people's mood may be affected. Some people become very cranky when dieting.
Zhang Nan: I agree with that. Emotional stability is important for our health and life. We cannot ignore the negative effects of dieting.
Lin Meng: In addition to dieting, it also writes about some common behaviors that are not conducive to weight loss, such as staying up late and drinking alcohol.
Zhang Nan: I know that staying up late doesn't help with weight loss, but does drinking alcohol also affect weight loss?
Lin Meng: Yes. Beer is brewed from rice, so it also has a lot of calories.

Tīng shuō zuótiān wǒmen zhè'er yǒu yīgè míngrén yǎnjiǎng. Nǐ qù tīngle ma?)
Hey I heard a well-known speaker came here to give a speech yesterday. Did you go?

Vicky: 哎。。。 (Āi... Wǒ qùle. Biétíle. Nǐ shénme yě méi cuòguò. Dōu shì yīxiē chéncílàndiào. Méishénme yìsi.)
Ah...I went. Don't ask. You didn't miss anything. It was just the usual cliche BS. Totally meaningless.

(A a OK. Gēn wǒ cāi de yīyàng, suǒyǐ wǒ cái méi qù. )
Oh OK, that's what I thought so I didn't go.

    Vicky: 啊。。 Nǐ hěn cōngmíng!)
    Ah..that was smart!
