  • Governments, the economy and civil society depend on the publicโ€™s trust to work effectively โ€“ but this trust is declining in an age of polarisation and misinformation. The UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has warned that this โ€œmalady of mistrustโ€ is as damaging as COVID or climate change.

We donโ€™t talk much about trust โ€“ but we certainly notice when it breaks down, in corporate scandals or political coups. But in a time when many are losing faith in our most vital institutions, how can the bonds of trust be rebuilt?

In Time for Trust, Terry Flew will explore these themes with leading experts on trust, from academics and journalists to community leaders, both from Australia and around the world.

Professor Flew holds a prestigious Laureate Fellowship from the Australian Research Council. Heโ€™s particularly interested in โ€œmediated trustโ€ โ€“ that is, forms of trust and mistrust as they are expressed in and through the digital media technologies we use to make sense of the world.

From trust in news to trust in digital platforms, from trust in corporations and governments to trust in AI, โ€œTime for Trustโ€  will ask โ€“ who, and what, do we trust, have we lost that trust, and can we get it back? And are technologies bringing us together or driving us apart?

Join us for a fascinating journey through one of the most important issues facing people and societies everywhere. Because Billy Joel was right โ€“ it is a matter of trust.

Time for Trust is brought to you by the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences at the University of Sydney, and the Australian Research Council. It's produced by Dominic Knight, and recorded on unceded Gadigal Land.

  • We're living through a moment in time that's difficult to comprehend and impossible to ignore.

AI is reshaping our work, our decisions, the way we imagine what comes next. Underneath that, something quieter is fraying. Our sense of connection, our trust, our capacity to make meaning together. It's never been easier to access information, and never harder to make sense of it together.

This series begins in that tension.

Ten chapters. Ten roundtables. Voices across disciplines, gathered not to perform certainty, but to meet what this moment is asking of us. What's breaking, what's at stake, and what it means to remain human in the midst of it all.

Convened by Eleanor Gammell, each conversation moves into the forces reshaping our minds, our relationships and our systems, and the quieter ways we might still find each other.

Eleanor is a convenor focused on systems dynamics and human futures. Her work spans Small Giants Academy, TEDxSydney, MONA and The School of Life, where she co-creates immersive experiences to engage with the pressing ideas and emergent dynamics of this moment.
