We've all been there, and we do mean all of us, falling for a friend is, at this point a rite of passage, but unlike a lot of our hetero-counterparts, it doesn't have to end friendships and it doesn't have to end up as a relationship either.

  • Hey y'all!

This week we have an extra special guest episode: this time with the one and only ECHO!! Echo (they/them) is a nonbinary, queer student who is navigating the world as a young Gen Z and trying their best to be their self and get through high school. But we wanted to hear all about that journey, and about what makes them tick!

We met Echo through the Arts Jam program that safeword (you remember Brandon from episode 40?) put on in summer of 2022. While we were there, we met Echo and thought it would be so cool to talk to them about their experience and their art and what they have to say and share. And here we finally are! Long time in the making, a queer convo with Echo!!!

We hope you enjoy the episode! Let us know what you think: drop us a line on our Insta, or email us at

  • Hey y'all, welcome back for the mid-season finale of season 4!

A panel of three, and it's all your fave hosts!! We have come together for one last podcast episode of 2022 to send you off into the holigays with some gorgeous tips on how to get through and thrive!! :)

For our last episode, Sam, Chris, and Kellum decided they wanted to discuss what they are doing for the holigays, what the season looks like for them, and how they survive the difficult times. Queerness and holidays don't always mix, and some of us at HTBQ know that better than others. But regardless, it is a time to celebrate you and your family, whatever family looks like to you. So whether you are with birthed or adoptive or foster family, or with chosen or circumstantial family, celebrate and know that we are with you every step of the way! We love you so much!!

  • Hey y'all, welcome back for episode five of season 4!

This week we have a panel of two because of food poisoning. But it's totally alright!! Because now you get to experience the joys of listening to the incredible amazing voices of Kellum and Sam!! You still get an episode because we still have hosts in the event of illness :)

Recently, while Sam was just minding her own business, she heard someone say "if my child is queer, I will need some time as a parent" and she was like I KNOW HTBQ NEEDS TO DISCUSS!!! So she brought it to the table this week! Kellum and Sam dive in and discuss the thoughts behind what it means to come out to given family, and the grace or grieving that some talk about needing. They also look at how they represent their queerness in daily life, and compare it with their past, look at how many times and how they have come out, and also look at how their queer journey has evolved and continues to evolve to this very day!

We hope you enjoy the episode! Let us know what you think: drop us a line on our Insta, or email us at

This week we have a panel of four - Sam, Chris, Kellum, and our special guest, Old Hollywood Correspondent, Max Mosher!

We get into some sp00ky territory this week, discussing all things horror! We ask Max some important questions, like 'why is horror queer?' and 'why do we love it so much?' and 'what's ur fave movies?'. We also talk about camp (no, not the outdoors kind, the gay kind) and its place in the horror genre. You are in for a treat with this one y'all. It's simply sp00ktacular!!

    ..........

Hey y'all, welcome back for episode three of season 4!

This week we have a panel of two because of scheduling conflicts, but this may happen with three of us. But it's totally alright!! Because if it does, you still get an episode because we still have hosts :)

Tomorrow (October 19th) is Pronoun Day, a day to celebrate the fact that people are in charge of their own pronouns. Pronouns are part of gender expression and tell the world how you feel you fit into the giant human social construct that is gender. Pronouns rock because they allow us to feel seen, especially when people use the pronouns that fit our truth. And that's what Kellum and Chris talk about today - how did they come to understand their pronouns, what is their relationship to pronoun usage, and some tips for everyone. Also, some other random gender stuff is discussed.

  • Hey y'all, welcome back for episode two!

This week, we went interview style, but looked for our guest from within the inner HTBQ circle - Chris! Yes, that's right, Chris takes the hot seat and answers questions from Kellum and Sam, with the conversation orbiting around Chris' experience with and intimate knowledge of education! For context, Chris currently works in a secondary school in Ontario and is the department head of social sciences. Chris is also currently working toward a Master in Social Justice Education, so a lot of equity is discussed. Other topics include: How does Chris run their classroom? How did the pandemic change things? What is going on with teens these days?

Let us know how you like us interviewing from within - wanna hear more about us? Drop us a line on our Insta, or email us at

  • Hey y'all, welcome to our grand opening!

We have returned for a healthy season 4, with lots of tasty morsels for you to enjoy! This week, we went roundtable style for a Styles-centred conversation, because there are few hotter queer icons right now. Harry Styles certainly has been making headlines recently, and caught the attention of the gays a long time ago while he was still in 1D with some of his first mentions he might be into guys too. But now he's notable Hollywood celebrity Harry Styles, of a different calibre and applicable to all. So, due to this, and due to Harry being once again asked "r u gAy?" by the media, this week we get into the nitty-gritty with our focus question of the episode: why won't Harry just come out already?!?!?!!!?

Our format for this episode is different than before, but we enjoyed the roundtable style of our conversation for this episode. If it so pleases the court, we would like to continue with this kind of rich conversation into future episodes. But otherwise, what can you expect from this season of HTBQ? Well, honestly all the same GOQS (good ol queer stuff). We have a few guests lined up already, we have some side episodes/series that we will be launching this season, and we will continue to educate you and keep you abreast (or achest) of the hottest topics in queer culture at any given moment.

We love you, thank you so much for listening, and we hope you enjoy episode 1 of this beautiful season!!

  • Well, beautiful family, that's a wrap on both our Pride Series and Season 3 of How To Be Queer!

This series has been very well-received from our mighty audience. This is why we are doing this - to produce some cool queer content that you can learn from and feel more connected to the queer community. We love you and we are very glad you are here! Thank you for coming on this journey with us.

We would also like to thank everyone who participated in the Pride series, including:

Martin Boyce, Stonewall Uprising Activist, courtesy of International Day of Pink (episode 31)

MJ and Tianna from Glad Day (episode 32)

Raegan from the ArQuives (episode 33)

Taryn (episode 13/14), Michael (episode 27), Shelly (episode 28), and Sara (episode 29)

Thank you for a great season to everyone involved! Stay tuned for when we launch season 4, with a release date of episode 35 in talks right now. For now though, HTBQ is going on hiatus. We will return for season 4 in the fall. In the meantime, we will be replaying 4 episodes: 1 chosen by us, and 3 chosen by you. Check out our Instagram stories on the release date of this episode to vote for your faves to replay! We are also returning to biweekly episodes... for now.

Alright, that is likely not all the updates we wanted to give you but it's all the ones we can currently remember lol. Have an absolutely spectacular summer, babes.

  • Instalment 3 of our Pride series!
In this week's episode we are talking to Raegan Swanson (she/her) about queer Canadian history. We talk about many significant events from the 60s, 70s, and 80s, and give you some more of the Canadian context! The events in the queer rights movement in Canada did not happen simultaneously to the US, and thus our histories are quite different. Listen to find out more!
The ArQuives is open to the public! If you are in Toronto check out their enormous catalogue of queer Canadian history by first booking an appointment and then visiting them at 34 Isabella Street in Toronto, or check out their website or Instagram!
A huge thank you to The ArQuives for sponsoring this episode.
    ...
Next week is our last episode in our Pride series - and with it, the end of season 3. It has been a beautiful season, and we cannot wait to see what season 4 has in store! Until that time, we will be going back to a biweekly schedule. During the hiatus we will be re-releasing some of our old episodes we want you to hear again!
Hope everyone is having a safe and happy Pride! As always, C U Next Time on How To Be Queer!

  • Wanna get the story of the Stonewall Uprising right from someone who was actually there??
Well look no further!! HTBQ has got you covered!
This week, in the first episode of our Pride Month series, we are in conversation with Martin Boyce, who was there irl on that infamous day that Stonewall was raided and kick started what we know today as Pride!
"Martin Boyce is a Stonewall Riot (Uprising) activist, sharing the story of one of the most pivotal queer/trans action in history.
The Stonewall Riots (also known as the Stonewall Uprising or the Stonewall Rebellion) were a series of spontaneous demonstrations by members of the gay community in response to a police raid that began in the early morning hours of June 28, 1969, at the Stonewall Inn in the Greenwich Village neighbourhood of New York City. Patrons of the Stonewall, other Village 2SLGBTQIA+ bars, and neighbourhood street people fought back when the police became violent. The riots are widely considered a watershed event that transformed the gay liberation movement and the twentieth-century fight for LGBT rights in Canada and the United States."
Visit International Day of Pink's Stonewall page for more!
Quick content warning: some descriptions of violence and slurs used.
An immense thank you to the International Day of Pink for arranging this conversation and sponsoring this episode alongside the Embassy of the United States!
