  • In today's episode, we get to speak with 3rd Degree JKD Black Belt, Entrepreneur, Stunt Performer, Stunt Choreographer, Actor, Instructor, Personal Trainer, and a good friend, Jénel Stevens-Thompson! Jénel is most globally known for her role in movies such as Black Panther, Avengers: Infinity War, Woman King, and several other movies and television series that you can find on her IMDb. Jénel is also the founder of Prowess Private training!

    In this episode we discuss:

Understanding that entrepreneurship and success is a “numbers game.” You have to follow up and try as many time and ways as you can with a specific focus and aim. “You can’t hit a target you can’t see [or that you don’t try to hit]”Continuity is important even if you have ups and downs with consistency. Returning to your goals and focus is what counts. Try to limit the inconsistency with time and practiceResearching what type of business you should have, and how to determine that (LLC, Corporation, Incorporation, S-CORP, etc.)Understanding the importance of saving for taxes and having someone who can help you if you don’t fully understand them (DON’T WAIT)!Knowing that in business and in life, you will get knocked down figuratively (and sometimes physically- especially if you are in martial arts), the important part to make sure you always get back up and keep pushing, and keep tryingYour timeline of profit v. loss might not be what you hoped and plan for, but be sure to adjust, adapt, and reevaluate along the way as well as just KEEP ON GOING!

  • In this episode, we had the honor of being able to speak with Olympic weightlifter, gymnast, personal trainer, and Founder of Semper Stronger, Rebecca Rouse! She shares her history in growing up doing gymnastics and how that helped her develop the discipline, strength and power within fitness and within her life and business to be better and every single day. She takes us through her life of moving from coast to coast and then finally to Texas and how that affected her business for the better or worse. We further discuss how although the pandemic was tragic for many and a terrible experience, we were able to grow and self-actualize from it in regards to trusting ourselves to create and build our own businesses. Sometimes it takes something big for us to be able to believe in ourselves wholly and understand that we should enjoy life each and every day while building, still preparing, and working towards the future of our dreams. Most importantly we realized how possible it all is.

“Don’t let fear guide your decisions… Growth doesn’t happen in the comfort zone.” -Rebecca Rouse

  • In today’s episode, we get to chat with, former Director of wine special projects at the renowned Momofuku and Eleven Madison Park restaurants, Founder of Bellus Wines and RAMONA, Jordan Salcito! Jordan delves into her journey in creating her now very successful business RAMONA and what it took to get there. She sheds light on the many changes and challenges she and her team faced along the way, to better help us navigate this world of entrepreneurship and give us perspective and understanding of how we too can make it happen for ourselves. But note, entrepreneurship is not for the faint of heart, but it certainly helps to build a strong and resilient one!

    We further discuss:

Understanding the “why” in every business and personal decisionImportance of having problems to solve (not to necessarily create them, plenty make their appearance on their own)Rebranding in the course of your business buildingThe importance of holding your ground on your company’s values and morals. Knowing what you are putting in your body (that includes what it’s packaged in). Winning strategies in businessHow motherhood may not always be planned, but can certainly be a motivatorThat what you set out to do might not always be what you end up doing, or rather in the way you initially envisionThat growth is all about progress, process, re-evaluation, learning, understanding, and changing the way we see the world and thinkThat we have to do better with understanding our health and what we put in our bodies especially concerning products we consume and ingestThat not only ingredients of products themselves that we are consuming can contain dangerous carcinogens among other hazardous waste, but also the containers they are stored inThat companies don’t have to legally let you know that they used a small form of what would be poison when creating their productsDo what you love because YOU love it. The product, service, or goods you offer will be better for it as will the demand thereafterBe clear on the “problems” you are solving and WHY you are doing what you are doingDo what you are doing in service to something bigger and that is the winning strategy

  • In today’s episode, we get to chat with American Author, Kristen Britain, about what it takes to become a full-time author in an industry primarily dominated by men. Kristen is the Author of the epic fantasy novel series, the Green Rider, and today we discuss the realities of transitioning your passion as your part time job, to your full-time career. This takes planning, understanding, sacrifice, and learning to budgeting accordingly, especially once you begin making money from your craft/ business.

Entrepreneurship is ever present in the Green Rider series, if you know how to look. Kristen has captured the heart of an entrepreneur and independent woman through the story telling of her characters and the resilience they demonstrate through times of unknown; through the feelings of frustration and loneliness when they commit to a journey alone that they have no idea how the outcome will play out; through the feelings of honor and pride from being independent but understanding you are part of a team that will have your back if you surround yourself with a good support system and learn to empathize with one another; and finally, through the development of who the characters once were and how they actively grow as a result of all they have been through (good, bad, and unexpected). As Warrior Women in the World of Entrepreneurship, we can all relate to these feelings and realities though they may look different to each of us.

Important aspects that helped shaped Kristen’s journey to becoming a full-time author include:

Being one of the few women that studied film production at Ithaca college during her time thereFeeling lost after college not knowing exactly which direction in life to takeLearning about women’s rights history pointed her to becoming a park ranger Understanding that writing has always been part of her life and creative processHow practice within your craft/ business is essential to the growth and development of your business. That we are never too big or too experienced to improve in what we doUnderstanding that perseverance and practice will pay off if you have patience, persistence, and a planLearning to not give up in the face of rejection, or sometimes in repeated rejectionKnowing your brand and to not sell out to a company that won’t represent you or the integrity of your work. *Choose the one that will value and honor your work and still pay you your worth*How messages and lessons are better received sometimes with subtlety and intelligence rather than forcefully. How to budget the advance you receive after you receive a book deal.

  • In today’s episode, we have a conversation with the Founder of The Conservationist Collective, marine conservationist, sustainability educator, and climate advocate, Carissa Cabrera.

    Within the episode we discuss:

The importance of social media in business and within business building. What constitutes as a non-profitBetter financial models for non-profits. How to use instagram and tik tok to promote your business and get information out there to reach and educate more viewers than you could through other more traditional forms of marketing. Showing up authentically online with your content sharing rather than just following trends. What hashtags to use and how. Getting young folks involved and educatedClimate crisis, regulators, and solutions. The ocean is the #1 climate regulator, so if the ocean is not healthy the environment will not be. Even if you live inland. Going from having your passion and business be a part time to a full time.Core identity of your business/ brandLoneliness of being an entrepreneur and putting your all into your business so it can survive and succeed. You have to believe in yourself and what you are building for others to do so. Perfectionism as a negative and positive. Don’t let perfectionism stop your process and ultimate growth through repetition. There is always room to grow, so start somewhere and continue to make it better as you put your work out there. Staying true to yourself and your mission. Loving what you do, be patient, preserver, and find a good support teamStaying humble and doing the work

So buckle up and enjoy the deep dive into the topics of today's day and age of creating and building brands, businesses, and non-profits!

  • In this episode, we speak with award winning bartender, mixologist, author, bar and bottle shop owner, and co-founder of Speed Rack, Ivy Mix.

We discuss the benefits and occasional downfalls of:

Having partners in various businesses Time and task prioritization “Time shaming” from fellow entrepreneursInherent competitiveness of entrepreneursQuality of life from time and task prioritizationNever having a true day off as a business owner, but know that when you check in your checking on something you’ve built.

We briefly discuss Ivy’s history as a horse trainer, and how her personality and work ethic from that helped her as a business owner and to develop her own businesses. We also discuss how important it is to keep active, prioritize your health and fitness, and to get out and get moving. Our bodies can take a beating whether from sedentary life or extremely active, so it's important to heal and train you body accordingly to allow it to recover, grow, heal, and strengthen through SPECIFIED strength training and conditioning.

Ivy further describes how being a twin has taught her the importance and benefits of working and partnering with others in business. With the right partners, you can rely on each other and on each other’s strengths.

We have extremely funny and real moments within this conversation of what it’s like living in Brooklyn when a car alarm goes off due to exuberant motorbike engine revs. At first one couldn't tell if it was the sound of subway breaks, construction outside, or the motorbikes. Living in NYC, it could be any one of those, and sometimes all at once!

  • In today’s conversation with Warrior Woman guest and entrepreneur, Jodi Barrett Founder/ Owner of Kettlebell Kickboxing Canada, we discuss her entrepreneurial roots, how they lead her to many different businesses (some she stuck with and others a grass roots beginning to help her along her journey to where she is in). She comes from farmers and ranchers in Saskatchewan, Canada and that is where she resides now and runs her business, Kettlebell Kickboxing Canada.

See how her business mind and spirit never gave up, and kept thinking and innovating business plans, ventures, and ideas until she found one that worked best for her. We can’t wait to see how Jodi’s progress and mission progresses and what other ventures she might create or get into. It’s inspiring and a reminder to us all that things aren’t necessarily always as dire or “all or nothing” mentality as we think. Just keep moving forward, learning, and understanding that we are not STUCK. If you don’t feel comfortable in a situation, with a partnership, with a business you created, you do not need to continue on in the same line of thought. Figure out an honorable, intelligent and truthful way to change it for the better- for yourself and others. Keep innovating and discovering warriors! We are in this together and here to help you along the way.

  • In this episode of Warrior Women in the World of Entrepreneurship we speak with artist and photographer, Madeline Shayne. We go over how burn out can happen even with something you absolutely love, and how to avoid that in the future. We also discuss how moving can affect your business and how to make sure that you create and sustain passive income to be able to have a buffer when you do have a life change of any kind that may take away from your main work and income.

Madeline's journey as an artist, photographer and entrepreneur began first with the influence, support, love, and lessons from her Grandmother and mother who supported and instilled in her the need to create and tell her own stories. At 17 years old Madeline's family moved from Arkansas, USA to New Delhi, India (talk about a change of culture and scenery), where she received her first hand-me-down camera that began her journey as a photographer. Although photography still remains and integral part of her creative process and business, she uses all she has learned from her love of fantasy novels, the natural world, and couture fashion to create fantastical imagery to photo prints, fabrics and wallpapers, bags, pouches, pillows, candles, mugs, towels, journals, stickers, towels, curtains, puzzles, gift wrap, and much more.

Madeline has also created a Companion Art Book for the Green Rider book series by Author: Kristen Britain. She partnered with Kristina A. Bishoff Composer & Arranger (our Warrior Woman Guest from Episodes 2 & 3) to create the artwork while Kristina composed and produced the book soundtrack, all while working along with Kristen Britain to ensure the integrity of the book series with the artwork and soundtrack.

We hope you enjoy listening to this episode with Madeline and all the experiences, lessons, stories and advice she has to offer.

  • Today's episode is finally here! Our second part of our conversation with Musical composer & arranger, Kristina A. Bishoff.

Kristina "composed and produced the original book soundtrack to the New York Times Best Selling Series, Green Rider, by Kristen Britain. This idea expanded into the Green Rider Book Soundtrack & Art Book project, which raised almost $100,000 through the combined efforts of crowdfunding and eBay bidding. The Green Rider fans rallied around the idea of music for their favorite series and we expanded the project to include artwork, accessories, cosplays, events, and other unique items that brought this beloved fantasy world to life."

Kristina graduated from BYU earning a B.A. in Commercial Music. She was the youngest of six students accepted into the Utah Valley University's Film Scoring Internship. There, she observed the music process for huge blockbuster films and received life-changing insight and advice from prolific composers Hans Zimmer, James Newton Howard, and Chris P. Bacon. Kristina also wrote music for another book soundtrack, Kaladin, a book soundtrack that raised over $100,000 on Kickstarter to create music inspired by Brandon Sanderson's famous novel The Way of Kings. She has also written music for Salt Lake Pops, Pretty Darn Funny web-series, commercials for businesses, and alternative pop artists including Robyn Cage (under the alias of Kristin Royal).

  • In the Fashion Industry for over 20 years, Founder & Designer, Jessica Krupa shares her first-hand experience with life in the corporate world and that of creating her own businesses to become full time entrepreneur.

While working as a Panty Designer for a leading company for nearly a decade, she discovered all the chemicals, cheap materials, and synthetic fibers that were applied to women’s panties and knew that these couldn’t be good for feminine health and hygiene, which lead her to create her own entirely organic panty brand, Panty Promise.

Jessica goes into many different facets and important information all entrepreneurs should know when creating their businesses. She shares how to organize time and priorities for your business, as well as some very helpful resources (some of which that are completely free to use) that can help you understand and better the growth of your business no matter what stage in building you are.
