  • Have you ever felt hurt by someone, and found yourself still holding onto feelings of resentment, sadness, or anger many years later? While it’s common to blame our pain on what others have said or done to us, the true roots of our suffering often lie in our own thoughts or beliefs.

In 1986, at the bottom of a 10-year spiral into depression and self-loathing, Byron Katie woke up one morning in a state of joy. She realized that when she believed her stressful thoughts, she suffered – and when she questioned them, she didn't suffer. Her simple yet powerful process of self-inquiry, called “The Work,” consists of four questions and a turnaround, which is a way of experiencing the opposite of what you believe. Byron Katie has been bringing The Work to millions of people for over 30 years. Her books include the best-selling book, “Loving What Is: Four Questions that Can Change Your Life.” As our guest in Episode 220 of The Mindset Game® podcast, Byron Katie shares the following:

An overview of The Work and how its four questions – Is this thought true? Can you absolutely know that it’s true? How do you react when you believe the thought? Who would you be without that thought? – can help you identify and reverse the thoughts that may be keeping you feeling confused, afraid, or lesser than How the ego can sometimes unintentionally keep us feeling hurt by focusing on the wrongs of others, and how the self-inquiry process can help soothe the ego Other gifts of self-inquiry, such as a more open mind, a greater sense of compassion, and an enhanced ability to understand and connect with others

Every Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday at 9 a.m. PT, Byron Katie hosts “At Home with BK,” a virtual session in which she masterfully guides others in doing The Work. To learn more or register for upcoming sessions, visit https://thework.com.

  • We are constantly surrounded by polarities, from those found in the natural world – such as light and darkness or birth and death – to those in our professional lives, such as the decision to grow your business or keep it small. While it may sometimes seem that opposite ends of a polarity cannot coexist in harmony, the reality is that they both need each other, and navigating them effectively is essential for living a happy, balanced life.

In Episode 219 of The Mindset Game® podcast, we welcome back Jason Campbell, who joined us previously to talk about breath mastery. His unique perspective on music, health, wellness, and spiritual growth comes from his lifelong study of both music and the ancient arts of Eastern health, medicine, meditation, and enlightenment. He is a seventh-degree black belt and co-founder of Zen wellness, teaching meditation, Eastern medicine, tai chi, qigong, sword and enlightenment at a 400-acre ranch in the mountains of Arizona. After guiding us through a powerful breathing exercise, Jason discusses the following:

The importance of understanding the concept of yin and yang and the role of different polarities in our lives, as well as tips for managing them effectively Why your perception of a “problem” is often a greater obstacle than the problem itself, and two self-mastery keys that can help alleviate stress and conflict: preparation and emotional regulation The three different types of karma (or cause and effect) – your own, that of other people, and universal karma – and how managing your own personal karma can help create greater harmony in your life and the world around you

  • While it may often seem that conflict and hate are all around us, humans are inherently social beings with a rich capacity for love, kindness, and cooperation. However, the potential for a more harmonious world must begin at the individual level – by striving to cultivate unconditional love for ourselves and in our personal relationships, we each have the power to bring more love and connection the world.

  • In our complex world, it often seems that we are surrounded by polarities – opposing views, values, goals, or approaches, such as centralization vs. decentralization, introversion vs. extroversion, or autonomy vs. control. While we may feel compelled to choose one side of a polarity or another, striving to connect the opposing sides may offer a more effective, sustainable approach.

Ivo Brughmans has been doing practice-based research on paradoxical thinking and leading for the last 15 years, and has written four books on the topic. His latest book is “Paradoxical Leadership: How to Make Complexity an Advantage.” In his work, Ivo develops a “both/and” perspective as a radical alternative to our current way of living, managing, governing, and coaching. He has a deep conviction that this perspective helps create more sustainable solutions to the challenges of the 21st century, providing the fundamentals for a fulfilled and balanced life, for better-performing and more innovative organizations, and for a better world. He gives keynotes, leads workshops and training programs on paradoxical leadership, and works with public and private organizations throughout Europe and around the globe. In Episode 215 of The Mindset Game® podcast, Ivo shares the following:

Why “either/or” thinking may be particularly risky in today’s world, where polarization often leads to more extreme, disruptive measures and countermeasures Why digging deeper and asking questions is often more important than finding answers, particularly when a group collectively engages in a dialogue that involves exploring the different energies underlying polarities Tips for leaders on how to effectively navigate change and other situations where members of their teams may hold opposing views

  • Have you ever had a goal that seemed so ambitious that you weren’t sure it was achievable? When our minds conceive a dream, we typically try to determine whether it is possible before taking steps to pursue it. However, this may lead to prematurely letting go of dreams that not only make you feel alive and inspired, but that also may in fact be possible with sufficient courage, clarity, and determination.

As a pioneering, combat-proven leader, inspiring speaker, and celebrated author, Colonel Martha McSally is a compelling example of overcoming adversity and fear to achieve extraordinary feats, including becoming the first woman in U.S. history to fly an Air Force fighter jet and command a fighter squadron in combat. Martha deployed six times to the Middle East and Afghanistan, flying 325 combat hours in the A-10 attack plane, for which she earned the Bronze Star and six Air Medals. In Episode 213 of The Mindset Game® podcast, Martha shares incredible stories from her life experiences, as well as the following insights:

The importance of getting clear on the vision you have for your future self, embodying it in the present, and taking inspired action toward that vision, rather than getting stuck on how you will achieve it Specific tips for connecting with the true essence of who you are, which can help you identify expansive opportunities that align with your higher calling How to differentiate between the types of goals will enable you to truly expand and grow, versus those that may be rooted in less empowering motivations

  • According to industry leaders such as Forbes, LinkedIn, and the World Economic Forum, the ability to influence and persuade others is among the top three essential soft skills in today’s business world. However, it’s crucial that persuasion is conducted in an ethical manner, ensuring that a favorable outcome is likely for all parties involved.

Known as the “godfather of influence,” Dr. Robert Cialdini has spent over 40 years conducting scientific research on how to ethically persuade others. He's the author of several New York Times bestsellers, including “Influence: The Psychology of Persuasion,” which has sold over 8 million copies, and “Pre-Suasion: A Revolutionary Way to Influence and Persuade.” In addition to his groundbreaking research, Dr. Cialdini has built his reputation by going undercover at used car dealerships, fundraising organizations, and telemarketing firms to observe persuasion in the wild. Numerous leading enterprises have sought his expertise, including Microsoft, Google, and Berkshire Hathaway. Through the Cialdini Institute, the world's most trusted educational institute in ethical persuasion, he has combined his knowledge into seven principles of persuasion, offering a systematic approach that anyone can use to get a “yes” more often. In Episode 212 of The Mindset Game® podcast, Dr. Cialdini discusses the following:

Why ethical influence is more effective than non-ethical influence, as well as surprising results from Dr. Cialdini’s research demonstrating the effects that an ethical vs. unethical culture can have on an organization’s employees and bottom line Why it’s crucial for leaders to develop a mindset aimed at developing a culture of ethical persuasion within their organizations A detailed description of the 7 principles of influence: reciprocation; likability; authority; social proof; commitment and consistency; scarcity; and unity

  • When seeking to reach new levels of greatness in your personal life, your organization, or the world at large, one of the most important steps is to get clear on what you want to achieve and why, in addition to ensuring that you are truly ready to pursue your goals. This requires having an in-depth understanding of where you currently are, where you want to go, and being able to draw a straight line between the two points.

At just 11 years old, Dr. Jeff Spencer wrote a contract with himself to participate in the 1972 Olympic Games, a goal he accomplished when he competed in two separate cycling events – and in the process, solidified his fascination with goal achievement as a human performance. Now, with five decades of experience creating champions, Jeff has helped athletes win over 40 gold medals and cycling teams to eight Tour de France victories. He has also authored three books, been awarded International Sports Chiropractor of the Year, and is the creator of the Champion’s Blueprint methodology. With notable clients that include Tiger Woods, Sir Richard Branson, the band U2, Lance Armstrong, and many others, Jeff is most renowned as a mentor to thought leaders and businesses who want to exponentially grow and catapult to iconic status. In Episode 210 of The Mindset Game® podcast, Jeff discusses the following:

Why our state of readiness – which is informed by the time and resources we have available, our experiences, and how we think and interpret the world – is crucial when beginning to pursue goals The importance of setting goals that are RIGHT, which stands for resonance, impact, growth, humanity, and time How tapping into your intuition can be even more powerful than the guidance you glean from your conscious awareness Why soothing your hardwired survival instincts is essential for unlocking your “seeker self” and developing a champion’s mind

  • From the messages we receive from our families growing up to fad diets trending on social media, we are constantly bombarded with ideas about how we should or should not eat and what our bodies should look like. Unfortunately, for many of us, these messages may lead to disordered eating, harmful emotions surrounding food, or body image issues.

As a clinical psychologist, Dr. Jeanne Catanzaro has specialized in treating eating disorders and trauma for the past 25 years. She trained in psychodynamic psychotherapy, somatic experiencing and Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR), before discovering the Internal Family Systems (IFS) model, which we discussed in last week’s episode with Dr. Richard Schwartz. As an approved IFS consultant, Dr. Catanzaro served as the director of a day treatment program for eating disorders for two years, and is the author of the book, “Unburdened Eating: Healing Your Relationships with Food and Your Body Using an Internal Family Systems Approach.” In Episode 208 of The Mindset Game® podcast, Dr. Catanzaro shares the following:

The various “burdens” we may take on over time as a result of the messages we receive from our families and society, and how these may impact our beliefs and behaviors regarding food and our bodies How the framework provided by IFS – which describes the relationships between our core, undamaged selves and our various parts that have taken on burdens throughout our lives – can be helpful in building healthier relationships with food The power of getting curious and compassionate (rather than critical) about the parts of yourself that may be driving certain beliefs or behaviors regarding food, inquiring about how they came to harbor those beliefs, and healing them if needed

Dr. Catanzaro then guides us through an exercise designed to help us better understand our protective parts, connect with them, and begin to shift them if need be.

  • As complex beings, we all encompass many different inner parts, or aspects of ourselves. Often, these parts may conflict, or we may feel ashamed or angered by those parts that we consider “bad” and therefore, try to suppress them. However, each of our parts serves a particular function that is meant to help us in some way, and by understanding where they all might have come from, how they work together, and how to foster healing and harmony among our various parts when needed, we can create space for our true, core selves to shine through.

Dr. Richard Schwartz, our guest in Episode 207 of The Mindset Game® podcast, is the creator of Internal Family Systems (IFS), a widely used, evidence-based form of psychotherapy that is particularly effective for dealing with trauma. It provides a non-pathologizing, optimistic, and empowering perspective and a practical set of techniques for working with individuals, couples, families, corporations, and classrooms. After beginning his career as a family therapist, Dr. Schwartz now serves on the faculty of Harvard Medical School, and has published five books, including “No Bad Parts: Healing Trauma and Restoring Wholeness with the Internal Family Systems Model.” In this week’s episode, Dr. Schwartz shares the following:

The 8 Cs of “Self” or Self-leadership — calm, confident, curious, compassionate, courageous, creative, clear, and connected — which represent who we truly are at our core when we allow the other parts of ourselves to step aside and create space How understanding the different parts of ourselves can help us become more effective leaders, particularly for those who may have developed an over-attachment to the inner parts that have fueled their success A framework to better understand the different parts of yourself – including the critics, protectors, managers, and inner children – and why they may behave in certain ways

Dr. Schwartz then guides us through an exercise designed to help us get in touch with those parts of ourselves that serve as protectors.

  • When seeking to create change in our own lives or within our teams and organizations, one of the biggest challenges is finding a way to ensure that the changes can be sustained over time and desired by all who are affected by them. For leaders in particular, developing an awareness of some of the psychological and neuroscience-related factors behind change – and what often triggers resistance to it – can aid in the process of building positive, lasting change.

With his well-established intentional change theory and complexity theory, Dr. Richard Boyatzis continues to research how people and organizations engage in sustainable, desired change. The theory predicts how changes occur in different groups of human organizations, including teams, communities, countries, and globally. Dr. Boyatzis has a PhD in Social Psychology from Harvard University, a bachelor's degree in aeronautics and astronautics from MIT, and is the author of more than 200 articles and nine books, including “Helping People Change: Coaching with Compassion for Lifelong Learning and Growth” and “Primal Leadership: Learning to Lead with Emotional Intelligence.” He is a frequent speaker on the international circuit, has consulted to many Fortune 500 companies, government agencies, and organizations, and his massive open online course (MOOC), titled “Inspiring Leadership through Emotional Intelligence,” has over 1.5 million unique visitors from over 215 countries. • For all of us, loss is a painful, yet inevitable, part of life – whether we’re facing the loss of a loved one, the loss of a job or a dream that didn’t come to fruition, or navigating a major change that represents the loss of a previous way of life. As difficult as it may be, the key to successfully persevering through these circumstances may be to face them head on, focusing on the factors we can control and letting go of those we cannot.

Mike Pierce, better known as “Antarctic Mike,” is an avid fan of polar exhibition history and an endurance athlete who became one of nine people to run the first-ever Antarctic ice marathon in 2006. As our guest in Episode 204 of The Mindset Game® podcast, Mike shares the following:

Stories that illustrate the power of letting go of things you can no longer control, in both the personal and professional realms Mindset shifts that can help ease the process of not only surviving loss, change, and other difficulties, but also embracing and even thriving amongst them Insights on navigating and finding new opportunities amidst organizational change

  • As companies of all sizes seek to drive valuation, they often encounter challenges that can lead to a disconnect between the steps they are taking to grow and succeed in the market and the results they are delivering for their customers, employees, shareholders, and communities. For business leaders, adopting a growth mindset and a “learn-it-all” culture (rather than a “know-it-all” culture) may be the key to overcoming these challenges and enjoying continued success.

As founder of the world-renowned Entrepreneurs’ Organization (EO), which has over 18,000 members globally, Verne Harnish has chaired EO’s premier CEO program held at MIT for 15 years, and has spent the past four decades helping companies to scale up. Verne is also the founder and CEO of Scaling Up, a global executive education and coaching company with over 293 partners on six continents. • When facing chronic health issues or other conditions that may impair your quality of life and longevity, it can be beneficial to address a range of different factors that may be affecting your health. However, conventional Western medicine often disregards some of these factors, so keeping an open mind and being willing to explore various approaches – rather than blindly following medical advice – is crucial.

As a clinical researcher, assistant clinical professor of family medicine, and founder of the Virginia Research Center and Richmond Integrative and Functional Medicine, Dr. Aaron Hartman began his journey into functional medicine when he and his wife adopted their first daughter from foster care. They went from specialist to specialist seeking treatment for her dietary issues and cerebral palsy – but even as a physician, the process caused Dr. Hartman to confront an uncomfortable realization: our current healthcare system does not have all the answers. Today, he helps patients identify leverage points in key areas of their lifestyle and health that harness their body's remarkable power to heal and begin living the vibrant life they deserve. In Episode 202 of The Mindset Game® podcast, Dr. Hartman discusses:

The triangle of health, which consists of gut health, stress, and sleep, as well as specific tips for improving each area Significant internal and external factors that may contribute to chronic disease – many of which are surprising, such as carpeting in your home or common cleaning products How your mindset and beliefs can affect your health and healing, specifically when it comes to being an active participant in your healthcare and keeping an open mind about a variety of approaches and recommendations

  • Have you ever found yourself pursuing a career or other endeavor and asking, “Is this all there is?” Many of us live our lives by default – following paths because we have found success with them, or because we’re trying to live up to the expectations that others may have for us. However, this approach often leads to feelings of burnout, dissatisfaction, or a lack of passion. A more fulfilling alternative is to start with finding your “why,” or the underlying motivation that drives everything you do.

After building a successful dentistry practice, Dr. Gary Sanchez realized that there was something bigger he was meant to be doing with his life. He is now an international speaker, author, inventor, and founder and CEO of the WHY Institute. He is best known as Dr. WHY for discovering the nine WHYs and creating the world's first why discovery tool, an online assessment that helps people accurately discover their why in under five minutes. Dr. Sanchez is the author of the book, “The Power of the 9 WHYs: How People and Teams Get Clear, Stand Out and Play Bigger,” and he is now on a mission to help one billion people unleash their true selves by discovering their WHY operating system, or what he calls WHY.os. In Episode 201 of The Mindset Game® podcast, Dr. Sanchez discusses the following:

How discovering your why can help you access greater energy, passion, and success in what you do, as well as techniques to help you find your why The 9 WHYs, all of which live inside each of us – yet we each have one why that surfaces more strongly than the others The relationship between your why (motivation), your how (process), and your what (deliverable)
