In this unit we shall look more closely at the evidence available to assess the truth of this argument. Were the working people, as opposed to the political leaders, interested in the issue of expansion? Was such interest evident only among certain sections of the community? Was it predominantly an enthusiasm for empire or not? We shall also try to identify some of the reasons underlying the nature of the response. And we shall be interested in how far politicians found it worth their while to ‘play to the gallery’ and to manipulate popular opinion. Through it all, we shall be facing some acute problems of evidence: is it possible to discover what ‘ordinary’ people thought about expansionism? This study unit is just one of many that can be found on LearningSpace, part of OpenLearn, a collection of open educational resources from The Open University. Published in ePub 2.0.1 format, some feature such as audio, video and linked PDF are not supported by all ePub readers.

Dive into a case of domestic terrorism from the past that’s really a warning about the future.
Back in 1995, there was a disaster that should have prepared us for January 6th and the political violence that we’re seeing today: the Oklahoma City Bombing.
Journalist Jeffrey Toobin reveals the story behind Timothy McVeigh, the Oklahoma City Bombing, and right-wing extremism in America - how a decorated army veteran became consumed with rage, how he somehow went underground and built a bomb that damaged fifty blocks in a modern city, and how everything that led to the horror of April 19th, 1995 is still very present in America.
Homegrown: OKC is a USG Audio podcast produced by Western Sound and Esmail Corp. Based on the book “Homegrown: Timothy McVeigh and the Rise of Rightwing Extremism” by Jeffrey Toobin.

Set in the heady days of 1970's Italy, before the internet shrank the world, 'Italia 77' tells a compelling story of two Lancastrian friends, fresh from the UK, one a failed dental student, the other, an ageing rugby star, who find themselves landed in Rome with the bold intention of taking the Italian sporting scene by storm, but this is far from being a sporting memoir. Join us on a journey of enlightenment, adventure, enduring friendship and discovery on a five-year trail from Rome to Florence taking in a kaleidoscope of sights, sounds and tastes along the way.

How will the church maintain its identity in the face of religious decline in the modern world? This is addressed in Building On History, a collaborative project between The Open University, King’s College London, the Diocese of London and Lambeth Palace Library. The project aims to give participants within the diocese an archived insight to historical research in order to understand how the church has responded to societal change in the last two centuries and to create space for fresh historical enquires in order to spread the message to the wider multi-cultured society we live in today. Featuring Dr Rowan Williams, The Archbishop of Canterbury.

When Labour won by a landslide in 1945, Britain was bankrupted by the war, cities & towns had suffered German bombing, and the country was still at war with Japan.
How on Earth then did Aneurin (Nye) Bevan & his team create the NHS when he couldn’t even tell his chancellor how much it would cost? And why did the Tories, doctors, and even Nye’s own party battle against him?
To celebrate 75 years of the NHS, all is explained in this 4-part documentary series of how a ‘no-good boyo’ from the Welsh Valleys came to create one of Britain’s greatest institutions.
Narrated by Sian Harries.
Featuring excerpts from the original Nye Bevan 1959 Election Speech and the original Dr Charles Hill ‘The Radio Doctor advises on Christmas Day over-indulgence’ recording (1942).
An Idea Hat Production.
Written by Ian Haig, Kenton Hall, Mark Hayhurst & Dr Carole Reeves.
