Mundon Mandeville runs a thoroughly disliked repertoire theater company and is murdered inside a windowless room in the building although everyone involved has an alibi.
Father Brown is a fictional Roman Catholic priest and amateur detective. He is featured in 53 short stories by English author G. K. Chesterton, published between 1910 and 1936. Father Brown solves mysteries and crimes using his intuition and keen understanding of human nature. Chesterton loosely based him on the Rt Rev. Msgr John O'Connor (1870â1952), a parish priest in Bradford, who was involved in Chesterton's conversion to Catholicism in 1922.[ Since 2013, the character has been portrayed by Mark Williams in the ongoing BBC television series Father Brown.
Character
Father Brown on a case, illustrated by Sydney Seymour Lucas for The Innocence of Father Brown
Father Brown is a short, plain Roman Catholic priest, with shapeless clothes, a large umbrella, and an uncanny insight into human behaviour. His unremarkable, seemingly naĂŻve appearance hides an unexpectedly sharp intelligence and keen powers of observation. Brown uses his unimposing demeanour to his advantage when studying criminals, to whom he seems to pose no danger, making him a precursor, in some ways, to Agatha Christie's later detective character Miss Marple. His job as a priest allows him to blend into the background of a crime scene, as others can easily assume he is merely there on spiritual business.Catch all our Father Brown stories in one place at www.bestof1001stories.com- see "episodes-categories-Father Brown

The story was written as a sequel to âThe Ice Palace,â and Clark Darrow appears in both. The omniscient narrator, who ensures that close observation is paid to Powellâs story, draws in the reader. The opening line â âJim Powell was a Jelly-beanâ- labels the protagonist immediately, and as a character he remains within the stereotype Fitzgerald indicates, though he almost manages to break free.
The history of Powellâs life presents a tale of a family fallen on hard times. Powell is humiliated by the whisperings of the social set and chooses notoriety over civility. He fights for his country aged eighteen and returns at twenty-one with ill-fitting, unfashionable clothes which symbolize how he does not âfitâ in society.
Powell contrasts with the attractive and dynamic Clark Darrow. He is unsure of whether to go to the party Darrow invites him to, but Nancy Lamar, with her âmouth like a remembered kiss,â entrances him. The simile is a romantic one, as although Powell has always known Nancy, she has never been attainable to him.
Its a small town story with all its class divides and Fitzgerald builds some very believable caracters around which his story evolves.

Yes- Poirot is BACK!...despite the terrible review we received a couple years ago complaining that my French sounds like its been infusd with Russian.. I was moved by that, and left for a year to study at the Sarbonne, at which time I was reminded that Poirot's character was born in lived as a child in in Portugal, and often took trips with his father to Moscowbefore the fall of the Romanovs-so I had to spend some time there as well. then it was back to the states to study the shows on PBS with David Suchet who does a tolerable job with Poirot- whats a few Emmy's anyway? Someday I will win the equivalent of an Emmy- what's that in podcasting- a Poddy?...for my interpretation of a (in this story) flu-weakened Poirot who hasn't lost his crime solving ability yet, Hastings. So there. Now on with the show.
The Mystery of Hunter's Lodge is a short story written by Agatha Christie, which was first published in The Sketch in May 1923 in the U.K. The story was published in the U.S. in The Blue Book Magazine in June 1924 as "The Hunter's Lodge Case". In 1924 also, the story appeared as part of the collection Poirot Investigates. -
Frank Stockton was best known for his humurous children's stories and later "fairy tales for adults" in which he pokes fun at our human capacity for misundesrstanding while building a very credible love story. He wrote the story in the mid 19th century and didnt live long enough to enjoy seeing it beceome a movie in 1936 starring Carole Lombard and Caesar Romero.

A young girl meets a stranger riding near her parent's ranch, does him a favor, and later comes to believe he may be a Mexican horse thief.

People note American writer Francis Bret Harte for The Luck of Roaring Camp and Other Sketches (1870), his best-known collection of his stories about California mining towns.People best remember this poet for his short-story fiction, featuring miners, gamblers, and other romantic figures of the Gold Rush. In a career, spanning more than four decades, he wrote poetry, plays, lectures, book reviews, editorials, and magazine sketches in addition to fiction. As he moved from California to the eastern United States to Europe, he incorporated new subjects and characters into his stories, but people most often reprinted, adapted, and admired his tales of the Gold Rush.
Parents named him after Francis Brett, his great-grandfather. Bernard Hart, paternal grandfather of Francis and an Orthodox Jewish immigrant, flourished as a merchant and founded the New York stock exchange. Henry, father of the young Francis, changed the spelling of the family name from Hart to Harte. Later, Francis preferred that people know his middle name, which he spelled Bret with only one t.
An avid reader as a boy, Harte at 11 years of age published his first work, a satirical poem, titled "Autumn Musings", now lost. Rather than attracting praise, the poem garnered ridicule from his family. As an adult, he recalled to a friend, "Such a shock was their ridicule to me that I wonder that I ever wrote another line of verse". His formal schooling ended at 13 years of age in 1849.

Tobin's Palm
From O' Henry's 'The Four Million': Two young sons of Ireland , John and Daniel (Tobin) head for Coney Island Amusement Park in order that good palm John can relieve Daniel of his worries over his girlfriend's not having arrived yet from County Sligo with his money. It's been three moneths and no sign of her. He consults a fortune teller who tells him things are not going his way and that he will soon see a pale girl, a dark man, and a man with a crooked nose who ( we can assume) holds the key to his future.
The Coming Out Of Maggie (also called Cinderella's Ball)
Warning : Racial slurs by today's standards, New York City as it really was by 1915 standards.
The story begins by explaining the Clover Leaf club, an Irish organization, and its exclusive dances. These dances are held at the Give-and-Take Athletic Association. To attend, you must be a part of the club or work for Rhinegold's paper-box factory. However, each member has the option to take an outsider to one dance.
Maggie Toole and Anna McCarty work together at the factory and are basically inseparable. Anna and her ''fellow,'' Jimmy Burns, would pick up Maggie every Saturday and bring her to the dance. It seems Maggie is a plain-looking girl who isn't sought after by any man.
One Saturday, the girls are leaving the factory when Anna tells Maggie to be ready, per usual, by 7pm. Instead of the usual response, Maggie says the ride will not be necessary; a gentleman is coming to get her to escort her to the dance. Anna is blown away and a little angry with Maggie's lack of information. ''You'll see to-night,'' Maggie says to Anna, and assures her she will see them at the dance.
The Secret Date
Around 8:30pm, Maggie and her gentleman friend enter the hall. Anna, whose eyes have been glued to the door since her arrival, is taken aback by how stunning the man is. Jimmy makes a few jealous comments, but Anna pulls him toward the couple.T
The Four Million is the second published collection of short stories by O. Henry originally released on April 10, 1906, by McClure, Phillips & Co. in New York. There are twenty-five stories of various lengths including several of his best known works such as "The Gift of the Magi" and "The Cop and the Anthem". The book's title refers to the then population of New York City where many of the stories are set. O. Henry was responding to a newspaper editorial by Ward McAllister, who claimed that there were only four hundred people in New York City worth knowing, by instead opining that every human being in New York is worthy of notice.[1]

Poirot canât resist a case, even when holidaying in Brighton with Hastings. When a necklace goes missing, the case is a simple matter of logic for the little Belgian.
This was only the second of Agatha Christie's short stories to appear in print. In the UK, it appeared in The Sketch magazine on the 14th March 1923 as The Curious Disappearance of the Opalsen Pearls and in the US it appeared in October 1923 as Mrs Opalsen's Pearls.
The story was first published as a book in the collection Poirot Investigates, 1924, by Bodley Head. The story was adapted for the TV series Agatha Christieâs Poirot in 1993, starring David Suchet, and like many of the other early episodes, included the characters of Hastings, Japp and Miss Lemon, regardless of whether or not they appeared in the original text. It was adapted as the first episode of the Japanese anime Agatha Christie's Great Detectives in 2004, which involved Poirot teaming up with Miss Marple's great niece.

Edgar Allan Poe wasn't just known for horror- he also had a sense of humor and a deep sense of justice for those who had been wronged. In this story, a French king who likes to play extravagent jokes on his guests decides to use his two dwarfs, which had been captured and sent to him by one of his generals, as the evenings' entertainment. The man dwarf, HopFrog, had earned that name from the King due to his crippled leg which kept him from standing up straight, and causing him to hop using his strong arms to help him move. Tripetta was also a dwarf, very pretty, and an excellent dancer. The two had become close friends since their capture. On this night the king becomes abusive- and Hop Frog includes a surprise in the evening's entertainment.
