Welcome to 24 Minutes of UX. In this latest installment of our new Ask the Author series, we're joined by Sheryl Cababa as giver and Peter Horvath as seeker.
Sheryl is from Seattle, Washington, USA, where she leads a human-centered design practice that is focused on Systems Thinking and evidence-based design. She is the author of a new book entitled Closing the Loop: Systems Thinking for Designers, published by Rosenfeld Media.
One aspect of Systems Thinking is understanding the relationships and flows between the key actors and structural elements in a system. From a design perspective, this helps us appreciate the wider context of the work we do, and Sheryl does a great job of bringing Systems Thinking out of academic silos and into the light of our everyday design practices.
Our seeker is Peter Horvath, a Strategy and Service Design Lead at Whitespace in Geneva, Switzerland. Peter is keen on applying Systems Thinking in his advisory work with multinational clients, and he devoured Sheryl's book as soon as it came out. He had plenty of questions for Sheryl, and as you'll hear, her answers will be helpful to any designer interested in this topic.
If listeners want to get a hold of Closing the Loop at a discount, they should attend the upcoming 24 Hours of UX event, where Sheryl’s publisher, Rosenfeld Media, will be giving away a number of free books and sharing a discount code. You can find out more about this podcast series and the annual event, 24 Hours of UX, at https://24hoursofux.com.

In a few episodes this season, we are connecting the Author of a book with one of its Readers. In our previous episode, you heard the first installment of this approach for the book ‘Customers Know You Suck’ by Debbie Levitt. You can get your hands on the book at https://cxcc.to/ckys.
The conversation was really interesting, so we are releasing a 2nd episode to cover the material we didn’t have time for in the 1st episode. The Author is Debbie Levitt, founder and principal of Delta CX and author of multiple books. The Reader is Jan Wardecki, a Service Designer at BNP Paribas Bank in Poland. In this episode, the Author and Reader are focusing on how to build a team and create a strategy to move your organization toward customer centricity.

Today’s topic is ethics in UX. Whose responsibility is it to create an ethical organization? What does it even mean to be ethical? And what does artificial intelligence have to do with any of this? Stay tuned, and you’ll find out.
Our seeker for this episode is Rebecca Parlin, based out of Maine in the United States. Rebecca has over 10 years experience in graphic design, but she is a recent graduate of General Assembly’s User Experience Design program. During her studies she was fascinated with ethics, and how design decisions can change the world for the better - or worse. In her quest for even more information on the topic, she turned to our podcast for answers.
We also welcome our Giver of advice, Sibylle Peuker, Ph.D. Sibylle is a Partner and UX Architect at Zeix, a user-centered design agency in Zurich, Switzerland. What makes her particularly well-suited for today’s topic is that she’s also a university lecturer for Digital Ethics. Sibylle is convinced that good design can make people healthier, happier, and even save lives, and has been the user’s champion for over 15 years. Testament to the varied background of UXers, Sibylle is a mathematician and computer scientist by training, and this knowledge comes in handy during her current work at the intersection of UX of Artificial Intelligence. You can find out more about this podcast series and the annual event, 24 Hours of UX, at https://24hoursofux.com.

Here's part 2 of our two-part episode on the topic of breaking into the field of UX. The truth is, most of us have come to the UX field by way of other career paths. Jesse was once a product manager, and Peter worked in marketing. Others have arrived via the paths of psychology, anthropology, market research, and even library sciences. The truth is that you don’t need to be a graphic designer or a human computer interface specialist to work in UX. So can you start your career working in bars and at ski shops and still become a UXer? Find out in this two-part episode featuring our seeker, Matthew Bradley, and our giver, Andrew Astleford. Matthew works as a digital transformation and design thinking coach for a large FMCG company based in Switzerland. Andrew hails from Atlanta, Georgia, where he works as a UX writer for a SaaS company.

Today our guests will talk about Object Oriented UX, or OOUX for short. The idea is rooted in practice, starting from a project for CNN in 2012. Since then the idea has evolved into a repeatable approach, helping UXers tackle any type of app, site or software. Grooming this OOUX approach since beginning is today’s Giver of advice, Sophia Prater. As a practitioner and trainer, she has worked with companies like CNN, Delta airlines, AT&T, Coca Cola, and many others. We also welcome our Seeker of advice, Joseph Duteil. He is UX Design Lead at Whitespace in Geneva, Switzerland, and has worked with clients in banking, such as EFG and Pictet, as well as the pharmaceutical giant, GSK.
