Canada will not bend the knee to Orange Jesus. Thatâs one reading of our recent federal election. The ballots were barely tallied before headline writers around the world were posing the question: âWill Canada lead the global opposition to Trumpism?
Do we have the muscle for the fight? Are we internally coherent enough to pull it off? Can we stay focused long enough on what Canada is and could be? These and many other questions need answers before we can address the notion of whether or not Canada is fit to lead an international rebel alliance against an increasingly unhinged and aggressive United States.
Stephen Marche, author of The Next Civil War joins us to tackle the idea.

Jesse Brown is an ideological slut. Well, so he says. His past votes have jumped, in no particular order, from the Conservatives to the NDP â....maybe there was a fringe party or Parti QuĂ©bĂ©cois vote in there somewhere, I canât even remember who Iâve thrown in with over the years â I have no loyalty, Iâm politically promiscuous.â
Given that this is supposed to be the most consequential vote of our lifetimes, and with the polls closing in just a few hours, youâd think even the âpolitically promiscuousâ Jesse Brown would have settled on a party by now. Nope.
So on todayâs show heâs gathered the best minds, or at least the most available of his colleagues at Canadaland, to argue the merits of each party.

While most Canadians are gearing up to head to the polls, some are looking for an escape plan. This week, weâre examining the deep roots of Western alienation, Danielle Smithâs separatist flirtations, and what could erupt if Mark Carneyâs Liberals sweep to power. To do that, producer Sam Konnert heads out to Alberta to talk to some voters, and calls up Preston Manning, the man behind the conversation. Later, host Noor Azrieh sits down with Dr. Lisa Young for a serious reality check.
And the latest on the utter sidelining of Indigenous issues, a polling update, and why you should get your arse out to the polls on April 28th.

The north is a hot topic. Trump, China, Russia, everyone suddenly has eyes on the Arctic. The Canadian government is promising everything from submarines to ice breakers to show the world we really are a nation stretching from sea to sea to sea.
Todayâs headlines might feel like weâre now in uncharted waters but Canada has been here before. In the 1950s Cold War tensions roiled round the north. The Canadian government at that time decided we needed not just boots on the ground, but that we must have civilians living on the land, and the further north that land was the better. One of the people they sent to the High Arctic in 1953 is still there. So Canadaland called him up to get his take on the current round of Arctic sabre rattling.
