I sat down to pick Nathan Stephens-Griffin brain about the Martha song Mini Was A Preteen Arsonist.
Nathan's band Martha released this song on their record Love Keeps Kicking in 2019. One of my favourite songs from the record, I was further intrigued by the song when a friend text me one day to see if I'd watched the documentary on Mini. Upon watching the documentary I thought it was time to speak to Nathan about the song.
For me the song, Mini and Nathan all have the perfect combination of beauty, vulnerability and defiance. After the loss of a good friend, The story behind the song has evolved in to something of a love story of friendship, rebelliousness, the north east.

Finally I built up the courage to ask Ellie and Louise Macnamara to be guests on Culture Fear.
I got to ask about the evolution of Heathers as a band, which I'm sure if you're a fan of any of their releases you'll understand both in terms of the music they were putting out as well as the way they functioned as a 'band'. I asked about their relationship with music growing up and whether their family holidays really included stop offs at DIY punk festivals and Heathers first shows and Dublin mixed bill punk shows. We went on to talk about how things have looked since Heathers have wound down a bit, and why that was too. And of course loads more too.
This was a great time, so I hope you enjoy listening to.

'DIY Music and the Politics of Social Media'. That is the name of Ellis Jones' first book. It's a great read on... well the clue is in the title of the book.
Ellis plays music in Podcasts and was most prolific under the name Trust Fund, where he released a few albums, a split or two and a bunch of ep's. We talk about Ellis' time playing music as well as being part of DIY and music communities as well as going in deep about ideas of what DIY is to him, and us, and others? I ask why there has been less music over the last few years, what it means to write academically and loads more.
I loved this chat. I hope you do too!
Enjoy xo

OK this was absolutely brilliant!
I love all these podcasts, but this one.. wow! So Mary is a champion Muay Thai fighter. Late last year she won the title fight.. the champion of the America's in her weight. I am so overawed and interested in that. We talk about what it means to fight and dedicate your life to fighting. We also talk about the importance of the team around you, as well as the culture around fighting. It was super interesting and eye opening for me.
We also talk about Mary's love for Self Defense Family, the band she has played in for a long while and her dreams of the future making music with them. Her solo-ish project Mary and the Small Omission, as well as old bands like Troubled Sleep.
We also talk about the podcast Worth It that she edit's. Check out that podcast if you enjoyed this conversation in any way. It's a brilliant podcast. Search it in your podcast app or find all the info on instagram @worth_it_podcast
Thanks for stopping by. Catch you soon xo

Steven Hill started Struggletown Records in 2011 and has released records for a number of bands from his city of Glasgow as well as for bands from around the world such as Shook Ones, Into It. Over It and Death Is Not Glamourous. He'd stopped the label for a few years, but as soon as I saw he was starting it back up I knew I wanted to get him on the podcast to hear about it. The label has changed, and we talk about that. We talk about the record by Flinch. that compelled him to start the label back up. We talk about his thoughts on DIY, how thats reflected throughout live music in Glasgow and how it might look post-pandemic.
We talk about the new podcast he has started, Struggletown Community Council. He actually had me on this podcast, so if you wanna hear more from me get on that. Just search it in your app.
Thanks for your time,
Xo

I had a lovely conversation with Lande, just a few weeks before her solo record comes out. We spoke about the songwriting processes she has with both her solo records and Muncie Girls, Muncie Girls' fanbase and the loudest parts of it, 2020's buzzwords and loads loads more. This chat had me laughing loads! I hope you enjoy it as much as I did.

Ok I could have reeled off so many bands Evan has been in and is in in the title of the podcast... so i'll do it here. Pet Symmetry, Their / They're / There, Stay Ahead of the Weather, The Progress and of course Into It. Over It. Evan's main project, that he has been soooo prolific with over the last decade plus. It was so great catching up with Evan and it's so exciting hearing about how his record Figure came together last year, as well as all the projects he is releasing records with over on his patreon. Check that out, it is wild!

This year has been brilliant for music. So many records have brought joy to myself and my friends over such a strange time.
I chatted to my friend T (who I also play in the band Consolation with) and we went through our ten favourite albums of the year, our favourite banger, the record we listened to most over the year that didn't come out this year as well as those records we found nostalgic comfort in.
There is also an accompanying radio show I have put together on our mixcloud where you can hear a song from each of my favourite records, you can find that here: https://www.mixcloud.com/culturefear/
If you can't remember the name of a record we talk about or just want to see what our lists are without listening head over to our instagram page @culturefear
Take care, have a great festive period.
Love Sean x

Last week I sat down and had a brilliant conversation with siblings Maeve and Matt Devine.
Maeve and Matt have both played in bands like Abandon Ship, Daskinsey4 & Burning Times together. There is also a plethora of other bands that they played in separately, like The Querelles & Turn Cold. It was really interesting talking through so many of the experiences they shared together, and how their perspectives may have varied. we talk about how they grew up playing and learning their instruments together, playing in bands and navigating different punk scenes and so so much more too of course.
I hope you all enjoy this.

Hello! This summer I had a great chat with my old buddy Sean Morris.
Sean plays music in bands like Synergy Corp and Wild Flowers of America, he ran Runner Up Records (Spraynard, Shook Ones, End Of A Year) and volunteered his time at Asian Man records for a while. We talk about all of that. We talk about him getting into punk at a super young age and starting his first band at 12! We speak about a whole lot. Sean is the antithesis of Posi-Punk, something I adopted massively as a teenager. Through his actions and his words he taught me a whole lot and it was super super fun sitting down with him to chat.
If you enjoy this episode then please tell your buddies. HMU on @culturefear wherever too
Peace and love

OK OK! CF is back.LOU!!!!!!! I loved this chat so much. Lou is an incredible multi instrumentalist punk musician. She has played in ALL the bands at this point. She is also one of the greatest people you could meet. We start at the beginner here, and it is definitely a part 1 episode. We don't even get to Caves. Which should indicate how great the conversation was.On the Culture Fear front, apologies this episode has taken so long to surface. We've been quiet on the podcast front for a few months. But the poddy is back. And I've been doing a fortnightly radio show that you can listen back to here: https://www.mixcloud.com/culturefear/Hope you enjoyed the episode. I was so excited to have a chat with Andy. I hit him up out of the blue and he was the most welcoming and excited person I think I have asked to do a podcast with! Which was nice as he is the first guest I don't know personally or am at least a good friend of a good friend!Anyway. Speaking to Andy about his perspective of being an anarchism whilst navigating the huge juggernaut of the music industry was interesting. Especially in the middle of this pandemic we find ourselves in. I hope you all enjoy this. If you do, recommend the podcast to a friend or something.Find us on the socials @culturefear x

Cassie is someone that wears her heart on her sleeve in a way I don't think I know anyone else does. A constant inspiration to myself and I am sure so many others. I learnt so much during this conversations. We spoke about getting into alternative culture, the coming together of radical politics and punk music for her, body positivity, trade unionism and of course so much more. I could have carried on picking her brain all day. Hopefully you get out as much from listening to this conversation as much as I did.Find us on the socials @culturefearTake care of yourselves xoxo

two twos naaaaah!Eddie Kenrick. You know him from rocking the 6 strings and crooning in the greatest power pop band of the millennium, The Number Ones. You know him from playing bass in the best hardcore band of the millennium. You know him from the best ~ insert sexual innuendo referencing Bang Bros ~ of the millennium. Ultimately though, Eddie is a really really nice bloke that cares about the history and future of the culture around him. From punk to the drearyness of what may become of Dublin. An amazing musician as well as photographer, and a funny fucker to boot! This episode is brilliant, thanks Eddie! If you enjoyed it please tell ya pals.find me on the socials @culturefearpeace and love in these strange times x

Episode 20 sees Culture Fear step into new territory, with the first distance conversation recorded. I chat with Kathryn about her bands Fresh, cheerbleederz and Me Rex (oh and she even teases a new band!), growing up in London, getting to tour with her favourite bands, her relationship with her Irishness and like LOADS more. It was great. I hope you enjoy it too.I have decided to push my productivity during these strange times into recording episodes with people who I admire and who's lives seem interesting to me who I normally wouldn't be able to talk to in person due to geography, so there will be lots of episodes coming up over the next couple of weeks. If you like the podcast, please tell a pal or share it or sommat. If you'd like to get in contact with me please feel free to, i'm on most of the socials @culturefearx

Jonah Falco, who you may know from bands such as Fucked Up, Career Suicide, Game and the deeper cuts of Smartboys, Mad Men and the new Jade Hairpins, sat down with me for a chat. This is the first episode I have done with someone I hadn't met before. Thankfully Jonah's charisma and brilliant stories put me at ease straight away and this was brilliant! We spoke about a lot, including how he got Urban Blight's More Reality sounding "less weak", Fucked Up moving through different aspects of and at times outside the punk subculture and what brought him to live in London.Find me @culturefear Tell ya friends if you enjoy this!

Culture Fear is BACK!And what a guest to have for the first episode back. I sat down and chatted with Erica Freas, who plays in bands such as RVIVR and Somnia. What a life she's had so far.
