"I am a teacher of people and the subject is dog training" - Michael Ellis. This is a quote that sums up the job of a dog trainer perfectly! The issue sometimes is that dog trainers have so much to learn and master with dogs that we have to struggle to find time to learn how to improve our skills as educators and communicators. In this episode, Brent and Mariano discuss tips and lessons that have helped them improve their abilities to communicate with their clients.

How do I establish authority with my dogs? Brent and Mariano get into what authentic authority looks like in dog training. They discuss ideas on how to establish authority with your dog. They also discuss common issues or misconceptions that can hinder people from developing a healthy sense of authority.

Method K9 is a wildly popular and successful dog training and rehabilitation program in Post Falls Idaho. We've had a chance to interview Stephanie Vichinsky, co-owner and head trainer in a previous interview (S2. Ep. 25) during which, she couldn't say enough good things about her husband and co-owner of Method K9 Julius Vichinsky. Julius is credited and the talent behind the scenes which perfectly complements Stephanie as the talent on screen. With such high praise, naturally, we had to interview him and get his thoughts on what dog trainers should focus on when starting and scaling their dog training business. thanks for listening!

Dog trainers all across the globe typically adhere to a particular training system. This could be due to the way they were taught to train. This could be due to the type of dogs or clientele they regularly encounter, etc. Now, here's the pro/con scenario: Pro - Different systems allow for trainers to learn new techniques from each other and evolve their own methods. Con - In the age of social media, many trainers can begin to argue why their system is superior to another. DTP has decided to wade into this topic in the form of discussing what training systems are. We take an analytical view of what a complete training system consists of and where to begin learning a new one. The hope is that with a better understanding of what a system is, we can all take a good look at the systems we employ regularly and improve our training! Thanks for listening!

It's funny to think there are so many ways to go about something as simple as walking down the street with your dog. Dr. Temple Grandin is a professor at Colorado State University. She is a published author, a highly respected animal behaviorist, and an all-around highly respected and influential voice in the humane treatment of animals. DTP co-hosts, Brent and Mariano were lucky enough to speak with her. The topic of why the use of tools in dog training came up. Her latest book "Visual Thinking" was discussed briefly as well. More than anything, though, you can really feel Dr. Grandin's passion and level of insight into understanding how animals view the world as well as themselves. This indeed was one unique and insightful conversation. We are confident that you will find it as beneficial as we did! Thank you for listening!

E-collars are very controversial tools. Many think that they should be banned and outlawed. Many others work with them to transform the lives of dogs and their relationships with their families. Much of this divide seems to be centered around people's experience levels with these tools. As with most things in life, knowledge, and experience are required in order to be able to make informed decisions on these tools. Dogtra has been doing more to help expand the availability of accurate information than most. They sent over Lorraine and Pete to chat with us. In this episode, we discuss the ways in which they've been doing that. We discuss what Dogtra is doing to help push against proposed e-collar sales bans in New York and San Fransisco. As well as answering FAQs and dispelling some myths surrounding the tools. Thanks for listening!

Behavioral Euthanasia is such a significant and important topic. Last episode we had an insightful conversation with Michael Ellis and Denise Fenzi. But it seemed that we needed to ensure this topic got the air time it deserved. This is why we've decided to have another conversation regarding behavioral euthanasia. This time, we've enlisted the help of a few of our good friends! We were able to enlist the help of Vinnie Somma from Say It Once, John Gotta of Gotta Train, and Samantha Johnson of Packlife_LA. We hope you enjoy it! Thanks for listening!
