  • The Devils may have started out slow, but they ended up dispatching a badly outmatched BC team with ease to win their 5th road game on the season against zero road losses. The Duke Basketball Roundup was in Boston (in the person of longtime collaborator Sam Klein) to witness the closest thing to a homecoming that Cooper Flagg is gonna get this season. Is it somehow possible that the Blue Devils played a bad game and still won by 25 points?
Oh, and the episode includes a couple shoutouts to beloved former Dukie Jaylen Blakes, who stuck a dagger in UNC's heart and twisted it with his buzzer beater. The Crazies better give him plenty of love when he returns to Cameron in a few weeks.

  • Duke takes every opponent seriously and so the Duke Basketball Roundup Podcast does too. Still, it is hard to find much that is very good to say about Boston College, the worst team in the ACC according to KenPom. In the DBR Pod preview, Jason and Donald look at how the BC program has fallen on hard times and what the current players are doing well (and poorly) as they try to get the program back to what it once was.

  • The Duke Blue Devils absolutely took the wind out of the Miami Hurricanes in a 89-54 beatdown on Tuesday night. Scott Rich joins us to discuss it all on Episode 683!

It’s Jason’s birthday (happy birthday Jason!) so he’s only on for a few minutes at the beginning to discuss Caleb Foster’s really good game as well as how bad the Miami defense was in letting Duke get any shot it wanted. After he departs, Donald and Scott go through the rest of the good, from Kon Knueppel’s career day in points to Khaman Maluach’s 15 rebounds to the great games from Mason Gillis, Patrick Ngongba, and the rest of the bench. The defense was there, the shooting was there, and Bill Courtney and the Canes just didn’t have the pace to keep up with the Blue Devils.

After the break, it was as close to a full 40 minute performance as we’ve seen from Duke, but there were still some details to clean up from this game. Scott and Donald get into it and then they go to Play of the Game, where they both take different perspectives of the same thunderous alley oop from Maluach.

  • A flurry of Duke news to cover in this episode of the Duke Basketball Roundup. First on our list is the status of Maliq Brown and how Duke will deal with not having our defensive savant available for a few weeks (we hope not longer than that). Next, Jason and Donald talk about the genius that is Cooper Flagg on offense and how Jon Scheyer constructed what is almost a perfect roster to fit around him. After that, the guys dive into Duke's next opponent, the Miami Hurricanes. Donald is a longtime follower of that team and he breaks down how their season has turned into such a nightmare. Lastly, the podcast crew dives into an idea Coach K is pushing... some kind of partnership between the ACC and the Big East.

  • The Duke Blue Devils won their game against the Notre Dame Fighting Irish yesterday in a game that got close at the end. However, Cooper Flagg’s record 42 points was the difference, and we recap it all on Episode 681.
Cooper Flagg’s 42 points was an ACC freshman record, the most points for Duke in over 35 years, and was incredible to watch. But, Notre Dame made it a test at the end, and Jason and Donald begin by discussing that test that the Blue Devils received. They then get into the headlines and all the good from the game, including Khaman Maluach’s career day. Cooper Flagg’s stat line is nothing short of mesmerizing, and there were other things that Duke did successfully on the afternoon.

After the break, we focus on what was not successful for Duke, from our defense late in the game to the bench production. Maliq Brown leaving the game after a minute due to injury is very concerning, and we hope that it’s not too serious. But, Duke got a bit of a pop quiz from the Fighting Irish, and while it wasn’t perfect, they were able to pass it and remain undefeated in the ACC. We of course end with our Play of the Game and our Player of the Week, which should come as no surprise.

  • What the DBR Podcast promises, it delivers. A month ago Jason and Donald were joined by journalist Jordan Brenner of The Athletic and DraftKings in a deep dive conversation about the Duke team that was filled with expert insight. And they promised they would bring Jordan back every month to assess what he sees from the team. So, with the calendar going from December to Janaury, it is time to have Jodan back on the Duke Basketball Roundup.
Needless to say, he is even more impressed with the way the team is playing now than he was a few weeks ago. The wide-ranging conversation goes from Duke's use of depth to the roles of deep bench guys to expectations for how the season will go during March Madness. This is an episode not to miss with someone who knows the Duke program inside and out.

  • The Duke Blue Devils are back in action on Saturday afternoon against the Notre Dame Fighting Irish. We preview that game on DBR Bites Episode 81!

Duke is 5-0 in the ACC and they have been rolling lately, and the Fighting Irish enters with a 7-7 record and reeling. But, they recently had Markus Burton return to the lineup and he is the heart and soul of the team. Together with Tae Harris and Braeden Shrewsberry, they post the biggest issues for Duke’s defense. Jason and Donald go through what Notre Dame does successfully and where Duke can take advantage. We’re hoping the defensive pressure continues against Notre Dame to keep them frustrated. We close this episode by sending some love and strength to one of our listeners who is going though some tough times.

  • The Duke Blue Devils won in fun fashion against the Pitt Panthers, and we recap everything on Episode 679!

There’s no way we can get into the recap without starting with the Dunk of the Season so far, when Cooper Flagg absolutely caught a body (and the foul) against Pitt center Guillermo Diaz Graham. We get into the rest of the good from the game, most notably the defense. The defense is performing at historic levels, and it’s incredible to watch. It’s fueled how Duke takes these games over and shuts an opponent down.

We also deal with the stuff to improve from this game, from the turnovers to Jason and Donald’s ability to make an opponent sound dangerous! There was a lot to discuss from this one, so it’s a longer episode. But, it’s one you’ll want to listen to from start to finish!

  • The Duke Blue Devils return home tomorrow to take on the Pitt Panthers, and we preview the Quad 1 game on DBR Bites Episode 80.
Duke and Pitt both enter with 12-2 records overall and undefeated in the ACC, and this is a strong Pitt team led by a beloved member of The Brotherhood in Jeff Capel. Capel has a team that has quite a bit of continuity, which makes their elevation to one of the best teams in the ACC. They have some length and some toughness, and they have some guys who can put the biscuit in the basket. Donald and Jason go through what Pitt brings to Cameron and how Duke can continue their unbeaten start to the ACC schedule. Before the break, we also do a little word on The Duke Effect and how many people tuned into Duke Basketball in 2024.
After the break, we switch to football, where Duke lost to Ole Miss last week in the Gator Bowl. Despite the 52-20 scoreline, there was some things to be proud of from Duke on both sides of the ball. We discuss how Henry Belin IV did throwing the football and how Duke is set up to be a contender for the ACC title next year with their schedule and many of the players coming back, including All-American Chandler Rivers.

  • A game at upstart SMU was supposed to be one of the biggest challenges left on Duke's schedule and most folks expected a close contest that would likely no be decided until the final minutes. It didn't take long for Duke to dispel that notion. The DBR Podcast crew cannot gush enough about this game where Duke jumped all over SMU and never let up for a second. Tyrese Proctor, Manman, Caleb Foster, and several guys get shout-outs but it is the performance of Cooper Flagg that really stands out as he impacts every aspect of the contest on both ends of the floor. A word of warning -- be careful as you listen or you might get caught up in a wee bit of irrational exuberance... the guys even calculate Duke's chances of winning out the rest of the regular season.

  • Having, hopefully, knocked the holiday rust off against Virginia Tech, the Blue Devils hit the road to Dallas for a big matchup with the SMU Mustangs. SMU may be new to the ACC, but they are looking to make a real splash in hoops the same way they did in football. And step one in that process would be a victory over Duke. The DBR Podcast gets things started by talking about how important this game will be for Duke's quest for a top tournament seed. This is a Quad 1 game and there just aren't many of those left on Duke's schedule, so the Devils need to take advantage of a chance to impress with a road win. Jason and Donald talk about what SMU does well (elite offense) and the matchups Duke will need to take advantage of to get a victory (wait until you hear about SMU's freshman big man). If you want to know what to expect on Saturday, this episode is the place to find out.

  • Welcome to 2025! The Duke Blue Devils closed out 2024 yesterday with a win over Virginia Tech, so we ring in the new year with Episode 677!
Donald and Jason break down the win over the Hokies by first talking about the vibes inside the building. Donald was in the building and ran into some listeners in what was a great time for all. We get into the good that happened, led by Cooper Flagg’s 24 points and Tyrese Proctor playing the game with some spunk. There was a lot to discuss, including Duke going 100% from the free throw line!
After the break, we get into some of the things that can be improved upon and there’s a major theme: rust was butter flavored yesterday. We then discuss our play of the game, which was a fun one.

  • Duke Basketball ends 2024 with a game against the Virginia Tech Hokies and Duke Football begins 2025 with the Gator Bowl against the Ole Miss Rebels. We preview both games on DBR Bites Episode 78.
Duke Basketball has a New Year’s Eve matchup with the Hokies, with Jaden Schutt returning to Cameron for the first time since he transferred to Blacksburg. He’s coming back as the Schutter we knew he could be and he’s likely coming with some extra motivation. Virginia Tech hasn’t played well this season, but they still have some guys to watch as Donald and Jason give you an in depth look at what they do on both sides of the ball.
After the break, we switch to football as Duke has a huge test against Ole Miss in the Gator Bowl on Thursday. Ole Miss is scary good, with most of their stars expected to play in the bowl game. We take you through what they do best and set the scene for what is a big test for the Duke program.

  • The DBR Podcast welcomes you back from the (brief) Christmas break with a flurry of some news stories. First up is the report that Duke is paying its new QB $4 million per season for the next two years. That's a big number that some say is the biggest contract in college football NIL history (for the moment). Jason and Donald break down what all this portal madness means for the football team. After the break, the guys have plenty to say about Jim Larranaga's decision to step down at Miami and what it says about the state of college sports. Oh, and this latest edition of the pod also includes a few words about how bad the back half of the ACC is this season and how it leaves Duke with almost no margin for error when it comes to showing up EVERY SINGLE GAME in ACC play.

  • While the Duke Blue Devils get an earned holiday break, the DBR Podcast crew is still hard at work. On Episode 676, we welcome back Ryan Young to the show for an awesome discussion!
Ryan Young has graduated from Fuqua and is in the real world, and we figured it was a great time to catch up with the beloved former center to see what he’s been up to since he got his Fuqua degree. He’s been able to watch several games in person this season as a fan, so we naturally get his thoughts on the current team, how they’ve been doing, and how he would have fit in the squad had he possessed one final year of eligibility.
We also get into the current state of college basketball, from the transfer portal to growing NIL numbers and how teams are affected. Of course, Ryan has a unique perspective as someone whose career started at Northwestern Wildcats as a freshman with no NIL and no transfer portal and ended with a Duke career with an extra year due to Covid and in a world where the transfer portal and NIL exists. He’s very candid with his thoughts on how the game has changed from the player’s perspective as well as the coach’s perspective, and it’s great to that he took the time to provide us with that insight.

  • The Devils went down to Georgia, they were looking for a game to steal. Tech was in a bind, they were way behind, and then K2 started to deal.
Ok, sorry for the stolen lyrics. The latest episode of the Duke Basketball Roundup features a complete report on the game in Atlanta where Duke ran away from the Yellow Jackets behind the lethal combo of Kon and Khaman. The pick-n-roll mastery of those two players powered Duke to a 17-2 run early in the second half that gave Duke a comfortable ACC road win. In addition to the PnR mastery, the game featured perhaps the best shooting game of the season for Duke and yet another session of masterful in-your-face defense. As a special treat, you get to listen in as DBR Podcast co-host Jason Evans attended the post-game news conference and got to ask Coach Scheyer and K2 a couple questions about the impressive display Duke put on as they head into the Christmas break.

  • Bill Belichick’s arrival at UNC Football has brought a renewed investment in the program. But will it come at a price for UNC Basketball? Sam Klein is back to help Jason and Donald break it down on DBR Bites Episode 76.
With Belichick comes the guaranteed increased in football investments, from assistant salaries to NIL dollars. Some in UNC circles feel that boosters may sacrifice basketball for a few years for the purpose of getting UNC into either the SEC or the Big Ten. Donald, Jason, and Sam debate whether the end of UNC Basketball’s relevance is a real possibility. There’s lots to consider here: whether UNC Basketball can continue to pull in top talent, whether big boosters out there are willing to continue investing in basketball, the potential for private equity to enter the fray, and whether the SEC or Big Ten would even want them in the next decade. It’s not an easy answer and it makes for a good discussion.
After the break, we take a look at CNBC’s list of perceived college athletics valuations. While the Big Ten and SEC dominate the list, Duke is in a pretty good position. Duke Basketball helps, but it’s the overall performance of the athletics department combined with other factors that has Duke in position to be okay, no matter how conference realignment continues to map its course.

  • The Duke Blue Devils head to Atlanta this weekend to take on the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets, and we preview it on DBR Bites Episode 75.
The Yellow Jackets stung the Devils last year in Atlanta, but once again have had a really bad start to the season. Still, they have some players who are dangerous and this is a game they’ve no doubt circled as a big time win opportunity. Donald and Jason discuss their record to date and then get into the analytics and players.
After the break, Vanderbilt’s Diego Pavia got a favorable court ruling that allows him to continue to play college football next season despite playing some junior college ball. The ruling could pave the way for JUCO athletes to get a full 4 years of eligibility to pursue NIL opportunities. But some may not think it’s a great idea, and we quickly discuss the pros and cons.

  • The Duke Blue Devils once again struggled shooting, but their defense made the George Mason Patriots put up bricks all night in a 68-47 victory. We recap the victory on Episode 674.
Duke actually had a good start this time, but they still saw a first half where they had a large stretch with bad shooting. After reviewing the headlines, Donald and Jason review the good from the game, which was highlighted by the stellar defense. Cooper Flagg led all scorers with 24 points and another near 10-5-5 game, and there were some standout moments from other players as well. Isaiah Evans once again proved to be a microwave off the bench.
After the break, we get to the bad, led by the first half shooting woes. There were also some details that need to be worked out and we discuss how to get a couple of key contributors their confidence back. We end with our Play of the Game as Duke moves to 9-2 on the season.

  • As they always do, the DBR Podcast brings you a preview of Duke's next opponent. This time it is the George Mason Patriots. But, unlike other smaller conference teams, Duke has bitten off a serious challenge this time around. George Mason is good -- they'd probably be a middle of the pack ACC team if they were in the conference-- and they have a bunch of guys who used to play in power conferences who are just itching to put a major notch in their belt. This is a preview worth listening to as Duke could be in for a real challenge in this contest.
After the break, the podcast gets into the major recruiting news out of... UTAH? AJ Dybantsa, the top player in high school and one of the most effective scorers ever at the high school level, has picked BYU for his one year college career. On the one hand it is a surprising choice, but on the other hand $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$. Dybantsa is set to be the highest paid college basketball player of all time. The DBR Pod breaks down what this will mean for next season and for the future of NIL-driven recruiting.
