Episode 82 - How to tell your Boss about Challenges with Working Memory
In this penultimate episode in the series of 'Working Memory' at work, we go through how communicate with your boss about the challenges of working memory.
Working memory affects everyone and people with dyslexia have a slightly reduce working memory capacity.
What does this mean?
But simply, working memory is that part of your brain which is supposed to hold multiple parts of information temporarily and re-call it when needed. An example of this in the work place might be, in a meeting with your team, or when in a training course.
We call it our brain's post-it note.
What does a reduced capacity look like in working memory?
A neurotypical brain would receive multiple parts of information, process it, organise is of where to store the information (long term memory, short term memory) and then re-call it when needed.
A dyslexic brain would receive parts of information, miss other parts of information as you're still trying to process the last bits, store it in short term memory, start to process new information, and forget the last price which has been stored temporarily.
Sound like you?
Well, in this episode, we give you some tips to help navigate this challenge, and most critically advice and suggestions on how to communicate these challenges to your boss in a way which packages it in productive and positive manner.
We even provide you with a full scrip of what to say below...**Asking for Help Via Email 1:**
Hello XX
I wanted to quickly discuss with you some options for approaching the team meeting that will help me complete my work faster and create more efficiency.
At the moment, our meetings are more like brainstorming sessions, where we often jump from topic to topic. How I process information means this unstructured approach can be overwhelming and does not allow me to contribute as fully as the team deserves.
Next week, would you mind if I created an agenda (with your approval) and we went topic by topic? This approach would allow the whole team to better prepare for our meetings, make note-taking easier, and create clearer, better follow-up after the meeting.
While our team meetings are not a big problem, I think this small shift might benefit the team and ensure we get the most out of our meetings.
Let me know what you think, and I’ll send a draft agenda.

Episode 80 - What Dyslexia is Actually Like
One of the ways in which Dyslexia in Adults helps people navigate the challenges and specifically in the work place, is though my 1:1 coaching.
With coaching its not easy for some people to understand what it is and how it can help. Which is why in this episode I am speaking with one of my past client who has kindly agreed to share their story and experience of 1:1 coaching, and how the coaching has helped to shape her life and career because of dyslexia!
Laura find out later in life that she had dyslexia and was ready through school education and well in to work. After her diagnosis, it was clear that some of the challenges with dyslexia were holding her back from career progression.
When Laura discovered Dyslexia in Adults she joined the Membership 'Hive' and instantly saw the kind of benefits she could gain from more !:! dedicated specific support in her challenges and so set-up a call with Natalie to explore some more.
Laura's change from starting her coaching session with very little understanding of her dyslexia and very low confidence, to clearer picture of what dyslexia is, and how she can build confidence in learning new strategies of navigating the challenges and thrive with dyslexia.

Episode 79 - Dyslexia Survival Guide to Work Meetings
Through the our membership 'the Hive' and social media, the most often question I get when referring to workplace challenges with dyslexia is about meetings.
This is not a surprise!
Meetings have so many challenges for people with dyslexia; taking notes, processing what is being said, loosing your train of thought, remembering actions the list goes on.
Furthermore, people with dyslexia has to navigate all of these challenges at the same time, which as we know makes it worse.
Don't fear, for Natalie is here!
The next few episodes of the podcast cover all things navigating meetings and slow processing, and in this episode I share with you what are the challenges so that we can understand better what is going on.*** Free Guide "Decode Dyslexia at Work" ***

Episode 70 - Dyslexia Success Story with CMO of Samsung Europe, Benjamin Braun.
This episode is a little different. In this episode I am joined by the brilliant Benjamin Braun, the CMO of Samsung Europe!
My aim with these ocasional guest interviews is to share and demonstarte real world examples of people who are scuessful BECAUSE of their dyslexia, not despite it.
This also proves that of the things we talk about on this podcast really do work in the real world, and they will work for everyone. It helps to contextualise the concepts we talk about on this podcast into real world examples.
Benjamin joined Samsung as their Chief Marketing Officer for Europe. Prior to Samsung, Benjamin led Audi’s marketing in the United Kingdom. His campaigns were used worldwide and recognised with a Cannes Lions Gold Award and an IPA Grand Prix for marketing efficiency. Before joining Audi, Benjamin was part of the comparethemarket.com’s executive team and worked across the UK, France and Holland. At British Gas he launched a nifty little app that lets you control your home from your phone. And before that he worked for American Express in New York.
Benjamin’s personal achievements include his photography exhibition at the Tate Gallery in London and receiving the Royal Swedish Glass design award. Benjamin also volunteers as a Special Police Constable in London where he responds to emergencies.

Episode 69 - What Navigating Dyslexia Looks Like
Ever been told "You just need to do things differently" or "do what works for you!"
Ever noticed that these phrases never come with any actual advice or suggestions of what this looks like!?
Well, at Dyslexia in Adults we DO do things differently. We actually share stories and advice of what navigating dyslexia's challenegs really looks like so that you can see that you're not alone, and contextualise practical tips so that you too can start to find what works for you by seeing what works for other people with Dyslexia.
In this episode I share with you a real life example from my own experience where I put in to practice 'doing things differently' in a way which works with my brain instead of against it.
It's important to me to open and vulnerable with you on this podcast so that, while others will talk about Dyslexia being a 'super power' we talk about the reality of dyslexia.

Episode 68 - Dyslexia and Reading Long E-mails
That feeling you get when you get one heck of a loooong e-mail!
This is a question that came up in our membership The Hive and ther person seeking help was desperate for that hack that would solve their problem.
Often, with dyslexia, the reading is not the problem, its the comprehension.
Comprehension is the understanding of teh whole text, not just the words. This usually comes about when you notice that you have re-read the same text multple times, and when you get to the end and relaise that you took none of that in.
Ofcourse there are loads of things which we could recomend. Theres a ton of assivtive technology and coloured filters you could use which might help. But I am sorry to say that, when we want real sucess with managing our dyslexia, the reality is that there is no one hack that will solve everything for you. And, though we could recommend loads of really helpful things, it is usually down to the individual needs as some things just won't work for you and the way your brain works.
In this episode I share with you some suggestions which we believe could help with thsi specific dyslexia challenge and what we think you should do to get ever lasting sucess.

Episode 66 - Understanding Working Memory with Dyslexia
What is working memory? How does it affect my day-to-day work, and how can I better understand working memory so that I can navigate the challenges and thrive?
These are just some of the questions my 1:1 coaching clients ask me and one that I am all too familiar with myself!
Working memory can purhapes be one of the hardest things to understand about dyslexia for ourselves and to explain to other people. And it is often the most maskes challenge.
When we understand dyslexia and working memory, we can start to impliment strategies to navigate the challenge, better explain it to others, and build confidence.
In this episode I share with you real stories from my own experience which demonstrates how working memory affects my day-to-day work, and how understanding it better allows me to create straegies that really work and help me to thrive.

Episode 64 - Finding Strategies to Support Your Dyslexia
In this week's episode I share with you how I work with my 1:1 clients to help spot patterns and create stratgeies which work with your brain to better navigate challenges of your dyslexia.
The first step is to... you guessed it... undertsnad dyslexia. Because when you understand what is going on you can understand how it affects you and teh task you're trying to work (Reports, Time Management, or even just claening your house).
Second step is to identify what's going on when things do go well and you find it a breeze navigating the same challenge. WHen we've identidied these little triggers, we can developp strategies to work around them to build something taht will work around how your brain naturally thinks.
I also share the key take-aways from my weekend at the Dyslexia Show.
