Miniaturisation of the hair follicles ~ Can this be reversed?
Sergio Cardona is a second generation Trichologist, following in the footsteps of his Father, who he worked alongside as well as being his mentor.
We discuss hair miniaturisation, how it happens, how to recognise it, and whether the process is reversible, along with the differences between telogen effluvium and androgenic alopecia.
Sergio shares how hair shedding can have an effect on the hair follicle, and the exact point that the hair reduces where it can no longer be reversed. He also shares how telogen effluvium may show signs of hair miniaturisation but that it doesnt compromise the hair follicle in the same way that genetic hair loss might.
He describes how to detect why the hair is thinning and what is causing it, along with the importance of creating a specific time line.

Is there inequality when it come to treating hairloss?
Dr Rex is from Arizona. He grew up in Nigeria and returned to the US at 18, where he studied medicine in New York. After learning that it was rare to find an African American dermatologist, he decided to specialise in this area.
We discuss how important it is to have representation within medicine, and how all practitioners should have a cultural understanding and empathy for their patients' backgrounds, traditions & beliefs.
It was after a mission trip to Ethiopia that he decided to become a Physician so that he could help people in rural underserved communities. He believes that there is an inequality within healthcare, particularly around the socially & economically challenged.
He works hard to encourage the future generation of dermatologists to use their skillset to increase access to dermatology in less desirable localities.

Combining medical science and herbal remedies to create safer products
Dr Ellana Stinson is from Boston, Massachusetts. She is an award winning ER physician, and has battled health issues which has led to hair loss and poor hair condition.
Dr Ellana shares that after her issues with her health, having thyroid cancer and surgery, medication and dealing with fertility issues, she found that she began to develop a greater awareness of the ingredients in the products she was using.
Many products on the market contain harmful chemicals, such as endocrine disruptors, and she was keen to move away from this. As a natural problem solver who is inquisitive and has a degree in chemistry, she decided to create her own product brand.
We discuss the health equity & disparity in medicine, and also in haircare, and Dr Stinson describes how there is still a lot of work to be done to accurately assess how safe the products and chemicals used in salons are, and regulations around safe usage practices such as ventilation etc.
She shares how education is key, as some products have hidden chemicals or confusing labelling, and how you can find healthier alternatives.

How important is nutrition when it comes to hair health?
Charlotte Lucas was a Pharmacist with the NHS for 25 years, and she became a little disillusioned with the general lack of preventative action in medicine. She has now completed a master's in nutrition.
She believes that many chronic health conditions could be managed and treated in a better way, and our body is an ecosystem.
Charlotte shares that nutrition plays a huge part in relation to health, and having experienced hair loss twice herself, once as a teenager during her GCSE's, and then later during menopause too.
She uses a combination of functional medicine, nutritional medicine and pharmaceutical medicine.
We look at how inflammation can affect hair loss and autoimmune conditions, as she states that 75-80% of the immune system is located in the gut, and our microbiome impacts so many aspects of our health.

It's not just about the hair!
Dr Pornima Mhatray has been a medical Doctor for over 30 years, and specialises in hair & skin treatments as she believes that hair or skin problems are a mirror of your overall health, and could be a sign of many possible concerns in the body.
We discuss taking a holistic approach to hair health, looking at many contributing factors, such as diet, stress & cortisol levels, hormones and fitness levels. She recommends nutrition, counselling, even meditation alongside some more conventional treatment options, and more recent innovations such as PRP.
She says she is seeing more patients in her clinic in Mumbai who are younger who are suffering from hair loss, and how this can affect their mental health. For some people, treatments like hair transplants can have a life changing effect, but this needs to be supported by an overall health plan.
Dr Pornima advises that if you are thinking of trying a certain product or medication, it is important to consult a professional to support and guide you.

Hair transplantation ~ Navigating the industry from a patient's perspective
Spencer Stevenson is an advocate who approaches hair transplantation from the unique perspective of a patient, having had multiple hair transplant surgeries himself.
Through his own mistakes he has learned a great deal, and works hard to help prevent others from being conned or suffering from unethical practices. He knows first hand that the hair transplant industry is not always ethical, and it is important to carry out due diligence and research well before any transplant or procedure.
When spencer was young, he had tons of hair, and this was part of his identity. By the time he was 21, he had began to recede, and by the time he was 24, he had become so self-conscious that he began to become reclusive & depressed. He avoided social situations & missed out on important events.
He tried a hair system, and minoxidil but still wasn't happy. He saw an advert and thought all his prayers had been answered, but this was the start of a long and arduous journey to regain more hair.
Spencer now helps to advise others on what is best for them, helping them to avoid the pitfalls and negatives of the industry.

The challenges of wearing wigs when you have sensory issues
Meg has autism & ADHD. She is a hairstylist and makes wigs in all colours.
She used to have long hair, but after shaving it off in 2018 to support a friend who was having chemotherapy treatment, she found she loved short!

Meg creates amazing rainbow wigs, but also has an extensive knowledge of what makes a wig more comfortable for someone who may be on the spectrum and have sensory issues. She has done a lot of research & trial & error into what works and what doesn't.
We discuss the density, fittings, materials, including where the hair is sourced from, and how it is made.
Meg has a mission to make wig making more popular and normalised, as well as making the hair space more welcoming for neurodivergent stylists & clients.

Supporting hair growth through chemical burns, scarring alopecia and menopause.
Angela Fields is from Florida. She first experienced issues with her hair when she suffered from chemical burns, following the use of relaxer to straighten her hair.
She then began to experience thinning in perimenopause, and discovered that she had a deficiency in Vitamin D.
After these issues were resolved, she then developed a scarring condition, central centrifugal cicatricial alopecia, known as CCCA, and has had to undergo scalp injections and biopsies to help to identify and treat this .
Hair health at this point became extremely important to Angela, but, as she has an allergy to fragrances, she found that she was unable to use 96- 98% of haircare on the market that contains fragrance. She decided to make something for herself in her kitchen, but after being laid off from her job in the corporate world she was pushed to take the product range to market.
She now works to help & support those with hair health concerns, particularly leading up to the menopause, and has created a supportive community where she offers education and advice.
