10 Strategies to help kids develop resilience.

Resilience is the ability to ā€˜bounce backā€™ from lifeā€™s difficulties. For many young people it is vital to help them develop resilience strategies that promote well-being and develop coping mechanisms. Many resilient teenagers are seen as resourceful and are emotionally and mentally balanced.

Andrew Fuller is a clinical psychologist and Generation Next speaker, he describes resilience as ā€œthe happy knack of being able to bungy jump through the pitfalls of life ā€“ to rise above adversity and obstacles.ā€

Tips for building resilience in children*
    1. Make connections
Teach children how to make friends and develop empathy. Encourage them to be a friend in order to get friends. At school, watch to make sure that one child is not being isolated. Connecting with people provides social support and strengthens resilience.
    2. Teach children to help others
Children who may feel helpless can be empowered by helping others. Ask for help with a task they can master. At school, brainstorm with children about ways they can help others.
    3. Daily routine
Following a routine can be comforting to children, especially younger children who crave structure in their lives. Encourage children to develop their own routines.
    4. Take a break
Although it is important to stick to routines, endlessly worrying can be counter-productive. Show children how to focus on something besides whatā€™s worrying them.
    5. Self-care for children
Teach child the importance of making time to eat properly, groom themselves, exercise and rest. Children need ā€˜down timeā€™ to relax, so make sure that not all free time is filled with a scheduled activity.
    6. Goals
Teach children to set reasonable goals and move toward them one step at a time. Moving toward that goal and receiving praise for doing so will focus children on what they have accomplished.
    7. Nurture a positive self-view
Help children remember ways that they have successfully handled hardships in the past and how this can help them handle future challenges. Help children learn to trust themselves to solve problems and make appropriate decisions.
    8. Be optimistic
Even when children are facing very painful events, help them look at the situation in a broader context. A positive outlook enables children to see the good things in life and keep going even in the hardest times.
    9. Self-discovery
Change and tough times are often when children learn the most about themselves. Help children to see that this is a good time to find out ā€œwhat they are made of.ā€ Change can be scary for young people, help them to see that change is part of life.
    10. Make home a safe haven
In high school, taunting and bullying can intensify ā€“ home should be a haven, especially as your teen encounters more freedom and choices and looks to home to be a constant, safe and emotionally secure place in his or her life.

    The Resilience Doughnut
Developed in Australia, The Resilience Doughnut builds resilience by considering both the internal qualities of a resilient person as well as the factors in the personā€™s environment which support and interact with those internal qualities. It is simple and practical and can be taught in a workshop format to school students.

  • In this episode, we delve into how Introvert & Extrovert personality traits and how this affect marriages.

ā€œThe meeting of two personalities is like the contact of two chemical substances; if there is any reaction, both are transformedā€

The terms "introvert" and "extrovert" were devised by Dr Carl Jung in the 1920s. The common misconception around these terms is that people think that "introverts" are shy, while "extroverts" are "outgoing" -- there are outgoing introverts and shy extroverts. The main difference between these two temperaments comes down to how energy is gained. Extroverts gain energy by surrounding themselves with others, while Introverts gain energy and recharge by spending time alone.

Thereā€™s a 3rd category, called Ambiverts, which are smack in the middle between the two.

Introverts are more aware of & sensitive to external stimulation ā€“ too much and it overwhelms, just right and they feel comfortable

Extroverts, less sensitive to external stimulation, means they thrive on lots of activity, people, talking etc and are wired to seek external reward stimulation.

    Well-Known INTROVERTS:

Bill Gates, Warren Buffett, Steven Spielberg, Meryl Streep, Al Gore, Mark Zuckerberg, Hillary Clinton, Michael Jordan, Steve Wozniak, Elon Musk, JK Rowling, Eleanor Roosevelt, Audrey Hepburn, Albert Einstein, Rosa Parks and Mahatma Gandhi.

    Well-Known EXTROVERTS:

Bill Clinton, Oprah, Martin Luther King Jnr, Muhammad Ali, Nelson Mandela, Steve Jobs, Margaret Thatcherā€¦and everybody on TikTok.

    BIBLE EXTROVERTS?

PETER: He was often front and centre in the action:

Heā€™s first in - Matthew 4:18 ā€œAnd he (Jesus) said to them, ā€˜Follow me, and I will make you fishers of men.ā€™ Immediately they (Peter and his brother Andrew) left their nets and followed him. ā€ Peter is fast to jump in the water in Matthew 14:29 ā€œā€¦ So Peter got out of the boat and walked on the water and came to Jesusā€ Peter doesnā€™t ponder ā€“ heā€™s fast to ask questions, to understand Jesusā€™ teaching ā€œBut Peter said to him (Jesus), ā€˜Explain the parable to us.ā€™ā€ Matthew 15:15 Peter is not going to hold back, rebuking even Jesus. Matthew 16:22 Then Peter took him, and began to rebuke him, saying, Be it far from thee, Lord: this shall not be unto theeā€. Peter goes to extremes John 13:8 Peter saith unto him, Thou shalt never wash my feet. Jesus answered him, If I wash thee not, thou hast no part with me. 9 Simon Peter saith unto him, Lord, not my feet only, but also [my] hands and [my] head!ā€™ā€ Peter takes up the fight John 18:10 Then Simon Peter having a sword drew it, and smote the high priest's servant, and cut off his right earā€

DAVID: He was often front and centre, and never one to back down from a fight. He was a natural leader and became the King.

2 Samuel 6:13 And it was [so], that when they that bare the ark of the LORD had gone six paces, he sacrificed oxen and fatlings. 14 And David danced before the LORD with all [his] might; and David [was] girded with a linen ephod. 15 So David and all the house of Israel brought up the ark of the LORD with shouting, and with the sound of the trumpet.

    BIBLE INTROVERTS?

MOSES presents as a clear introvert

Numbers 12:3 Now the man Moses [was] very meek Exodus 3:1 Now Moses kept the flock of Jethro his father in law, the priest of Midian: and he led the flock to the backside of the desert, and came to the mountain of God, [even] to Horeb. Exodus 4:10 And Moses said unto the LORD, O my Lord, I [am] not eloquent, neither heretofore, nor since thou hast spoken unto thy servant: but I [am] slow of speech, and of a slow tongue. 11 And the LORD said unto him, Who hath made man's mouth? or who maketh the dumb, or deaf, or the seeing, or the blind? have not I the LORD? 12 Now therefore go, and I will be with thy mouth, and teach thee what thou shalt say. God also goes on to partner him with Aaron, who is likely an Extrovert, in fact tells that Aaron will speak to the people Exodus 4:16 And he shall be thy spokesman unto the people: and he shall be, [even] he shall be to thee instead of a mouth, and thou shalt be to him instead of God.

    JESUS? More likely an Ambivert

He was clearly involved in any kind of group situation: speaking to crowds of thousands, teaching and leading His small group of disciples, initiating tough one-on-one conversations.

He was sociable, as well as having a calming, peaceful nature ā€“ all while being able to front up to leadership of His day

The key here is ā€“ where did Jesus go to recharge?

Luke 6:12 And it came to pass in those days, that he went out into a mountain to pray, and continued all night in prayer to God. Matthew 14:13 When Jesus heard [of it], he departed thence by ship into a desert place apart: and when the people had heard [thereof], they followed him on foot out of the cities. Matthew 14:23 And when he had sent the multitudes away, he went up into a mountain apart to pray: and when the evening was come, he was there alone. Matthew 4:1 Then was Jesus led up of the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted of the devil. 2 And when he had fasted forty days and forty nights, he was afterward an hungred. Whether he spend time alone to recharge, or to spend time with his Father, what we do see in Jesus is the best traits, the absolute strengths, of both introverts and extroverts.

10 Who can find a virtuous woman? for her priceis far above rubies.

11 The heart of her husband doth safely trust in her, so that he shall have no need of spoil.

12 She will do him good and not evil all the days of her life.

13 She seeketh wool, and flax, and worketh willingly with her hands.

14 She is like the merchants' ships; she bringeth her food from afar.

15 She riseth also while it is yet night, and giveth meat to her household, and a portion to her maidens.

16 She considereth a field, and buyeth it: with the fruit of her hands she planteth a vineyard.

17 She girdeth her loins with strength, and strengtheneth her arms.

18 She perceiveth that her merchandise is good: her candle goeth not out by night.

19 She layeth her hands to the spindle, and her hands hold the distaff.

20 She stretcheth out her hand to the poor; yea, she reacheth forth her hands to the needy.

21 She is not afraid of the snow for her household: for all her household are clothed with scarlet.

22 She maketh herself coverings of tapestry; her clothing is silk and purple.

23 Her husband is known in the gates, when he sitteth among the elders of the land.

24 She maketh fine linen, and selleth it; and delivereth girdles unto the merchant.

25 Strength and honour are her clothing; and she shall rejoice in time to come.

26 She openeth her mouth with wisdom; and in her tongue is the law of kindness.

27 She looketh well to the ways of her household, and eateth not the bread of idleness.

28 Her children arise up, and call her blessed; her husband also, and he praiseth her.

29 Many daughters have done virtuously, but thou excellest them all.

30 Favour is deceitful, and beauty is vain: but a woman that feareth the LORD, she shall be praised.

Submitting yourselves one to another in the fear of God.21 Wives, submit yourselves unto your own husbands, as unto the Lord.22 For the husband is the head of the wife, even as Christ is the head of the church: and he is the saviour of the body.23 Therefore as the church is subject unto Christ, so the wives to their own husbands in every thing.24 Husbands, love your wives, even as Christ also loved the church, and gave himself for it;25 That he might sanctify and cleanse it with the washing of water by the word,26 That he might present it to himself a glorious church, not having spot, or wrinkle, or any such thing; but that it should be holy and without blemish.27 So ought men to love their wives as their own bodies. He that loveth his wife loveth himself.28 For no man ever yet hated his own flesh; but nourisheth and cherisheth it, even as the Lord the church:29 For we are members of his body, of his flesh, and of his bones.30 For this cause shall a man leave his father and mother, and shall be joined unto his wife, and they two shall be one flesh.31 This is a great mystery: but I speak concerning Christ and the church.32 Nevertheless let every one of you in particular so love his wife even as himself; and the wife that she reverence husband.

  • Welcome to He Says She Says God Says, the Podcast about Marriages & Relationships where God is at the centre.

Hosted by Ben & Emily Campbell, and several other married couples, this is a show all about relationships and married life for Christian couples.

We are hoping to cover every aspect of married life, regardless of whether you are looking for a husband/wife, are newly married, halfway through your married life or are enjoying retirement and your twilight years...we will have topics that are important to everyone.

God has been at the foundation of Christian Marriage since the beginning, but God is often not a central part of people's marriages today. Here's some information from the Australian Bureau of Statistics

The proportion of marriage ceremonies overseen by a civil celebrant increased to 78.0 per cent of all marriages in 2017 Depending on the year, somewhere between 43-50% of marriages end in divorce The average length of a marriage before divorce is 12 years

We will also be looking to the bible for inspiration, concepts and principles that God has designed for our marriages.

You may have some ideas and suggestions and we would LOVE to hear them. Feel free to drop us an email [email protected].

Thanks for listening! Don't forget to subscribe on your favourite podcast app so you don't miss any episodes.
