  • Real estate investing is a topic that we don’t spend nearly as much time discussing compared to the early days of the podcast. And even then we were both less enthusiastic about it compared to a decade ago! Back before we started the podcast it was pretty much all that we talked about but does it make sense to continue investing in real estate today? Well our guest thinks so! We’re joined by long-time real estate investor Dave Meyer. Dave is the Head of Real Estate at BiggerPockets which is a site and online community that provides resources and education for investing in real estate. We discuss the current state of the housing market, where Dave thinks it’s headed, a breakdown of his portfolio, why he thinks there's opportunity to be had with value-add real estate, and much more!

  • Here on the podcast we don’t shy away from the fact that we’re big fans of having kids- Joel has three, Matt has four. But that is not typical here in the United States where the average is 1.6 births per woman… but why? We think the costly nature of having kids is one of the reasons. Depending on which study you’re looking at and the cost of living cited, we’ve seen upwards of $400,000 per kid! But even still, should it be all about the numbers? Should that data drive all of our decisions? Luckily we’re joined by someone who is a parent and knows all about the data- Emily Oster. Emily is a professor of economics at Brown University, the author of books like Expecting Better, Cribsheet, and Family Firm, and now host of the new podcast Raising Parents. And while you might know her as the lady who says it’s ok to have wine and coffee in moderation while pregnant, or as the health economist who shared unpopular opinions on Covid policies during the pandemic, we’re excited to share our conversation that’s all about our money and kids: making career breaks and staying home with the kids, why we need to approach family decisions the way a business would, Emily’s take on allowances, and more!

  • “Broke is temporary, but an unexamined poor mindset can be permanent.” As we discuss with our guests today, your mindset makes all the difference and your finances are no exception. And speaking of guests, one is a CFP financial psychologist and the other is a former professional dancer for T-Pain, an unlikely pairing! Dr. Brad Klontz and Adrian Brambila are the co-authors of the new book “Start Thinking Rich: 21 Harsh Truths to Take You from Broke to Financial Freedom”. This book is all about delivering actionable solutions to increase and diversify income, to help you save what you make, and to discover ways to grow your money in your sleep. Externalizing your problems, taking a victim mentality, and constantly looking to others to provide for you are the exact wrong behaviors and the embodiment of an unhealthy mindset that will keep you from attaining your goals. Listen as we discuss some of their harsh truths like getting rid of poor friends, blaming yourself if you’re poor as an adult, and plenty more!

  • “Humankind finds itself at a strange crossroads; we know intuitively that true wealth – real wealth, soulful wealth – is about far more than mere money. Yet, far too often, we act as though money is an end unto itself, sacrificing some of the richest parts of our lives in its pursuit.” Quoted directly from Dr. Daniel Crosby’s new book, The Soul of Wealth. Daniel is making a rare, second appearance here on the podcast because when you write multiple fantastic books on investing and personal finance, we’re going to want to have you back on! He’s a psychologist, the Chief Behavioral Officer at Orion Advisor Solutions, and author of many thought-provoking books that are more than just “investing guides.” Listen as we have a great conversation about finding balance between financial wealth and true wealth, all in pursuit of living a good life!

  • The reason there are so many hard seltzers on the market, the type of car you’re looking to buy, even why women wear children’s clothing – our guest today is going to share why it is in fact TAXES that are behind nearly every aspect of our lives. We’re doing a deep dive as to how taxes tend to direct our behavior and decision making in ways that most folks don’t realize, and those are just a few of the examples that we discuss today. We’re joined today by Scott Hodge who has over 35 years of tax policy experience. More recently he led the Tax Foundation, a Washington DC based think-tank, for over two decades. And today we’re going to discuss his recently published book, Taxocracy which is full of examples of how misguided tax policy has led to the world we live in today. Most people think of taxes as an annoying aspect of life, but our conversation today reframes it as another powerful invisible hand at work in the market!

  • Ok, here us out: retirement is a topic that we talk about all the time here at How To Money, but simultaneously we probably don’t talk about it nearly enough! How is that possible you might ask? Well, we are oftentimes discussing retirement through the lens of investing – spending less and cutting costs so you can invest more… for retirement, maxing out your Roth IRA… for retirement! We’re typically approaching retirement from our personal perspective and it’s no surprise to anyone that we’re not actually retired. We still *think* we’re young bucks even though we’re arguably in mid-life, but because of that we might not cover the nuts and bolts that go into actually retiring, as often as maybe we should. We definitely don’t do it as well as Christine Benz which is just one of the reasons we’re pumped to have her join us today. Christine is a long-time contributor to Morningstar, the fantastic investment research site that we often reference here on the pod. Specifically, she’s the director of personal finance for Morningstar as well as author of the new book, “How to Retire: 20 lessons for a happy, successful, and wealthy retirement.” We get into Chrinstine’s investing shortcomings, how the Morningstar rating system has evolved over the years, how the definition of retirement is also evolving, the value of work, the impact of retirement on relationships, and more!
