  • Welcome back to Justice Matters! We are thrilled to have Phil Hyldgaard, the Global COO of A21, back on the podcast. This has been in the works for some time now, and I finally got the chance to jump on a video call with my long-time friend and social impact leader!

In this episode, we delve deep into A21's mission to eradicate slavery globally and their innovative approaches, covering the following topics:

The Crucial Next Phase: Giving It All AwayPhil shares how A21 is entering a pivotal phase after 15 years of dedicated work. Their mission now involves giving away resources and knowledge to empower communities, organizations, and individuals in the fight against slavery. Embedding sustainable models of anti-trafficking work is central to their strategy.

Mutually Beneficial and Mutually Sacrificial PartnershipsPhil discusses the key to A21's success: partnerships that are both mutually beneficial and mutually sacrificial, and also action-focused.

Legislation and Law Enforcement ChallengesPhil emphasizes that laws and enforcement mechanisms are often lagging behind, and addressing this gap is crucial. A21 works collaboratively with governments and businesses to tackle this issue.

"Sound of Freedom": Success and ControversyWe reflect on the success and controversy surrounding the film "Sound of Freedom," which addresses the horrors of human trafficking.

Survivors as Heroes and LeadersPhil acknowledges the essential role of survivors of human trafficking as the real heroes and leaders in the fight against slavery. Their resilience and courage inspire and drive the work of A21.

"Walk for Freedom" CampaignWe talk about A21's annual awareness campaign, "Walk for Freedom," which amplifies the message against slavery on a global scale. The campaign was held on October 14 in over 70 countries around the world.

Organic Cultural Shifts and MovementsPhil shares insights on how real change and transformation occur organically through cultural shifts from the ground up. Movements are observed, not declared, and lasting impact emerges from grassroots efforts.

A21: Making a DifferenceA21 is one of the most effective and trustworthy organizations in the anti-human trafficking space. They are worthy of your support in the critical mission to eradicate slavery everywhere.

  • Amanda is the founder of DISTRACTD, a brand new Gold Coast organisation connecting communities, delivering information, education, panel discussions, mingles and advocacy, all about ADHD.

Diagnosed with ADHD as an adult, she became hyper-focused on ensuring that there was a local organisation where people could come together and support one another, learn and break down some of the stigma around this hugely misunderstood disorder.

An eternal optimist, Amanda is the epitome of the term a ‘people person’. Driven by a passion to connect, promote, inspire and elevate those around her, Amanda has been nurturing partnerships for the Gold Coast Music Awards for the past decade.

As a passionate creative, Amanda has also spent many years working behind the scenes in stage productions, where she learned from an early age that side of stage and not centre stage was where her heart lay. She is the Co-founder and Business Development Director of the Gold Coast Music Network, as well as Blank Street Press.

Amanda has always been endlessly creative and draws inspiration constantly from the world around her. She creates works from contemporary ink pieces, along with children's illustrations to fine art sketches.

Amanda loves sharing a pot of Earl Grey or a cheeky G & T with the city’s bustling businesses who share a love of our unique and dynamic region’s ever growing creative scene.

In this episode, Amanda and I — in true ADHD fashion — bounce all over the place talking about our own personal challenges living with ADHD. Some of the topics we discuss include:

    - ADHD in the workplace and how we can create a culture of belonging and equality for those with ADHD.
    - The education system and how ADHD affects children and how we can create environments for everyone to learn.
    - Insights into the brain of someone with ADHD.
    - Starting DISTRACTD and the community and empowerment that is forming.
    - Her TEDx Talk "Unleashing the artist within" — https://youtu.be/2AB0NBeTIjY

  • The tables are turned in this episode of Justice Matters. The lovely Monique Gaudion and host of the Boffola Podcast came into the studio to interview yours truly, after meeting me at Tedx Currumbin in October.

  • Tim sits down with the Producers and Directors of the Scattered People Film, John & Lizzi Swatland to discuss the inspiration behind their moving documentary about two young musicians who flee their homeland and seek asylum in Australia where in immigration detention they discover the Scattered People band and find community, hope and a voice.

  • In this episode with former El Salvador refugee and lawyer, Eduardo Cruz, we talk about his passion for redemptive justice, his tattoos — which include patron saint of El Salvador — Oscar Romero, and even his reluctance in pursuing a career in law.
