    Kristin Archambault

    Kristin Archambault is a veteran French and Spanish teacher. Although most of her experience is at the high school level, she currently teaches middle school French in Storrs, Connecticut. She is also President of RIFLA (th Professional organization for Rhode Island language teachers), a former world language student teacher supervisor at the University of Connecticut, and a frequent presenter at state, regional, and national world language conferences in the US.

    Amy Marshall is a dynamic and energetic Spanish teacher who teaches with a variety of techniques that fall under the umbrella of comprehensible input and TPRS. Building community and relationships with her students is one of the greatest focuses of any classroom that she teaches in. To connect and to truly care, building real relationships and community among the students and herself in her classroom is a huge contributing factor in guaranteeing a sense of belonging and as such a successful experience in learning language.

  • Rachel Benson joins Language Lounge host, Michelle Olah to discuss her journey from classroom teacher to district language coordinator, supporting teachers during online teaching. Rachel made the decision to return to the classroom for the 23-24 school year and shares her unique perspective on life in the modern day classroom and resuming her role as a teacher leader in the upcoming school year.

    Bio

    Rachel began her teacher career as a Graduate Teaching Assistant at the University of Missouri-Columbia before teaching in a Berlin high school on a Fulbright Fellowship. Over the last 14 years, she has split her time teaching high school and middle school German as well as serving as the World Language Coordinator and Chinese Immersion Coordinator for the Blue Valley School district in Overland Park, Kansas. Rachel has returned to the classroom full time and is currently teaching middle school German. In addition, she is wrapping up her final year on the executive board of the Kansas World Language Association. Having spent some years in a leadership role, Rachel decided last year to work toward an administrator license, but for now, she is enjoying the humbling experience of being back in the classroom.

  • Restorative circles can be a powerful tool for setting classroom norms, building community, addressing behaviors that are impeding teaching and learning or a way to gather feedback about how students are feeling about learning. In this episode of the Language Lounge, guest Mike Farkas discusses the importance of restorative circles in his teaching and gives tips on how you can get started.

    Michael Farkas is a Spanish teacher at Canton High School in Canton, MA. Since 2019, Mike has been a member of the MAFLA Board of Directors. Most recently during his tenure, Mike has co-designed and co-implemented an additional MAFLA offering called MAFLA Meets, which aims to connect MAFLA members and create a social space for fellow world language educators to connect and collaborate. In addition, Mike is an ACTFL LILL (Leadership Initiative for Language Learning) Advocate from Cohort 4. Mike has presented on topics pertaining to social-emotional learning, unit design, and personalized learning in the WL classroom at MAFLA, NHWALT, and ACTFL. Mike is passionate about creating a classroom environment where all learners feel a sense of belonging, empowerment, and a capacity to communicate with others in Spanish.

    Over the years, I've enjoyed teaching intermediate and advanced Spanish classes, coaching an all-gender soccer team, and sharing my expertise in Latin dance as an evening activity. I hold a Licenciatura in Teaching Spanish as a Second Language from Universidad Internacional UNINTER in Morelos México and a Master's in Latin American Studies from Cleveland State University. As an immigrant with 20 years of experience, I proudly represent the lively city of Cuernavaca, México. My unique contributions, learnings, and unlearnings at the Putney School have invited me to present at renowned World Languages conferences, including the distinguished Massachusetts Foreign Language Association 2018's "Best Workshop of State Conference." I am a co-founder of the influential Minnesota Council on Teaching Languages and Cultures 2020 "BIPOC/Immigrant World Language Educators strand" and a sought-after featured speaker at The Northeast Conference on the Teaching of Foreign Languages 2021 in NYC.     Lisa Shepard earned her bachelor’s degree in education with a major in French and her master’s degree in curriculum and instruction. During her 29 years in the classroom she developed her knowledge of best practices in world language education by taking courses, attending conferences, reading professional publications and participating in a variety of online forums. In 2016, she was selected as the Ohio Foreign Language Association Teacher of the Year. She has provided professional development to world language teachers by presenting workshops at the local, state and regional levels as well as through her blog, Madame ‘s Musings. She is now using her experience with standards-based unit design and proficiency-based instruction and assessment to present at regional and national conferences and provide on-site workshops to teachers interested in updating their practice to reflect current standards.
