For most SLAYER fans, Tuesday, September 11, 2001, began as every other new music release day would: we all anxiously anticipated stopping by the record store after work to pick up a copy of their brand-new album, GOD HATES US ALL.
Words cannot describe the eerily psychotic synchronicity that seemingly linked the atrocities of that day with the timing of the release of SLAYER’s 9th studio album. Still, after twenty-three years (and counting), one thing remains unchanged: GOD HATES US ALL may have been the lone moment of redemption during America’s darkest hour, chock full of brutally scorching riffs, hostile vocal vitriol, and a creepier sonic signature that makes this one of the landmark albums of the band’s career.

TITLE TRACKS are not always the ultra-obvious, one trick pony they’d seem to be.
Sometimes it IS ultra-obvious and is smack dab in the middle of the chorus where it belongs, sometimes only one of the words might be included in the chorus, and still other times “the chorus is not explicitly mentioned” anywhere within the title track at all.
As you can tell, the rules regarding TITLE TRACKS are often “unburdened by what has been” particularly when factoring in all the confusing rules and conditions that seem to be a part of the burdensome phenomenon known as TITLE TRACKS. But while everything that preceded this sentence may not make any logical sense to a logical person with a logically functioning mind, it’s nothing that we can’t power through and figure out by working together.

Hopefully by now, everyone is familiar with those first three notes from the first Black Sabbath album. During The Middle Ages, this was referred to as DIABOLOUS IN MUSICA (which is Latin, meaning “The Devil In Music”). While also known as “The Devil’s Interval”, or in musical parlance simply as the tritone, SLAYER fans recognize DIABOLOUS IN MUSICA as the band’s 8th album of sonic evilocity and darkness, and the 2nd with Paul Bostaph on the drums.
Even though it was released on June 9, 1998, as the nu-metal era was peaking, DIABOLOUS IN MUSICA is most definitely NOT Slayer’s “nu-metal” album. It still possesses all the sinister signature sounds and the dark, macabre subject matter, but there’s an unusual, experimental quality present on this album which defies definition and is unlike anything found on their previous albums. The overall production quality is much more aggressive and grittier, with the vocal performances utilizing some never-before used darker nuances, ensuring that DIABOLOUS IN MUSICA is an almost gratifyingly uncomfortable listening experience.

Imagine being in a record store, just flipping through the LED ZEPPELIN section of albums on November 8, 1971, and finding an album that appeared unfamiliar, mysterious, and perhaps even a bit out of place. The album cover gave no reference as to the band’s name or any discernible album title, the back cover had no track listing, there were no pictures of the band.
There was nothing.
On the front cover, there is nothing more than a framed picture showing an old, bearded man standing with a cane and carrying a large bundle of sticks on his back, hanging on the weathered wall of a semi-demolished home once belonging to someone who has long since passed away. On the back cover, a high-rise apartment building jutting into the bleak, grey sky, surrounded by smaller apartment homes and lush greenery in the foreground. On the spine of the album, where one would expect to see the name of the band and the name of the album, there were only four distinct, unusual symbols. In time, it would come to be known by many names: RUNES, ZOSO, UNTITLED, and the most common name of them all, LED ZEPPELIN IV, which would go on to become the biggest selling album in the band’s catalog and one of the top 10 biggest selling albums in the history of ALL music.
Get ready to “have a good August” and remember that “sometimes words have 12 meanings” because it’s time to take “Dry July” a step further and step up your “pause game” while we share some kind words regarding our neighbors that were likely caused by a case of “Alabama jet lag”. Often in life you have to “strike while the iron is hot” because more often than not, the “First Strike Is Deadly” and not striking may result in lost opportunity and success. And while TESTAMENT were riding the wave of success from their first three albums and the subsequent tours that followed, their fourth album within three and a half years, SOULS OF BLACK, might have been a step too far.
Granted, the October 9, 1990 release of SOULS OF BLACK was a prerequisite for the band’s inclusion on the European leg of the Clash of the Titans tour, and while it’s chock full of riffs, incredible guitar solos, and “eerie harmonies” that are all essential elements of the TESTAMENT sound, overall “the chugs are lacking”, and understandably so, because after 3 albums and 3 tours in less than 3 years’ time, the boys from Berkeley could have used a much-needed break before going back into the studio after such an intensive writing, recording, and touring cycle, back to back to back.
It’s time to indulge in some “debaucracy” as we accidentally included the latest episode of “The Triangle” within this episode (“because everybody’s offended by everything now”). May 17, 2024, marks the day that KERRY KING released the diabolically brutal debut, FROM HELL I RISE, forging a new chapter in thrash metal. And before you get all “skeptical” about it and start in with some snide remark like “Oh, this is just diet Slayer…”, understand that this is definitely NOT Slayer (although, it kinda is…even though it’s “allegedly” not).
Make no mistake, KERRY KING is not just that bald, tattooed dude from Slayer with some random backup band. In fact, KERRY KING is a legitimate thrash super group with an all-star line-up featuring members of Death Angel, Vio-Lence, and (of course) Slayer. And for a debut solo album, FROM HELL I RISE is an absolute scorcher. In short, “it’s huge and big…it’s bigger than huge”, and if you like Slayer and/or Vio-Lence and/or Death Angel on ANY level, you are really going to enjoy this album.

Not only is BILLY MILANO a blessing and “a bold, courageous man”, he’s also the mastermind behind M.O.D. (METHOD OF DESTRUCTION), the crossover thrash patriots that emerged following the end of S.O.D. with a similar sense of politically incorrect humor, biting social commentary, and a more hardcore infused thrash sound than S.O.D. May 3, 1988, may just be the biggest, red-letter, landmark date in all of progressive metal, as it marks the release of QUEENSRYCHE’s 3rd studio album OPERATION: MINDCRIME, one of the finest concept albums in all of metal. It’s very much a “Pink Floyd meets heavy metal” style and vibe, and is quite a departure from their two previous albums (The Warning & Rage For Order), with a very “in your face” mix, some power metal overtones, and perhaps the most aggressive bass sound on a metal album EVER, which is weirdly ironic considering that QUEENSRYCHE was the weirdest opening band choice to open for the biggest thrash metal band on the planet (at the time) who had just released an album that, conversely, had the most absent bass sound on a metal album EVER. (Sometimes life is just way too weird…)
Remember that $25 was a small price to pay in 1988 to become “a happy man” even though “only YOU can make YOU happy” (because “you rent ‘em, you don’t buy ‘em”). Prepare to find out the answer to “which would be worse?”, discover where to go for any “gift ideas”, learn the identify of Matt’s doppelganger and hear about Russell’s “Mr. Miyagi moment”, including the resulting “truck trim” prior to making his transition from guitar player to bass player. Summary:
AC/DC’s follow-up to Back In Black, 1981’s FOR THOSE ABOUT TO ROCK (WE SALUTE YOU), seems to have a heavier, darker, and doomier vibe than its legendary, multi-platinum predecessor. FTATR (WSY) is all about dynamics, as Robert John “Mutt” Lange’s production masterfully blends the sounds of Highway To Hell & Back In Black with just a touch of the old school Bon era, resulting in an album that’s louder, crispier, crunchier, and overall, pure FIRE! (Not to mention, it’s got frickin’ cannons on it!). And similarly, as with Back In Black, there is almost an interchangeable quality to it, as you could just as easily listen to Side 2 first and then listen to Side 1 (though, to be fair, Side 2 might actually be better than Side 1).
Always remember that there’s no such thing as “fat vampires” and “you can’t change your name once people are used to calling you what they’re used to calling you”. Get ready to do some “binge listening”, try to avoid doing “all that weird flippity stuff”, be sure to “have a nice June” while you’re “rubbing the canyon” and JOIN US as we dive into what may just be the finest album of the Brian Johnson era of AC/DC with FOR THOSE ABOUT TO ROCK (WE SALUTE YOU).

For those who haven’t been following the bouncing ball(s), we’ve been discussing the ’86 DEATH MATCH since we did our ’88 Death Match a few episodes back (which was a complete bloodbath all on its own!) so we decided “What better way to commemorate our 5th anniversary as ‘The Number 2 Podcast Ever’ (behind Rogan) than to pit the two finest albums in the totality of thrash metal history against each other…to the death!?”

“Is this the GOOD Sabbath or the BAD Sabbath?”
We know what you’re thinking: “Wait, didn’t they skip a few albums in there somewhere? Did they put them all on Patreon or…what happened?” Rest assured, nothing has been skipped, however, we did jump ahead a little bit because “some of us” have been jonesing to fast forward through the BLACK SABBATH catalog by 3 albums or so and time travel straight to 1981 and the release of MOB RULES, the final studio album (at the time) from the legendary Ronnie James Dio era of the band.
There’s a certain distinctive sonic difference between Heaven And Hell and MOB RULES, primarily with regard to production. While Heaven And Hell tends to have a more “Rainbow meets Ozzy Sabbath” sound to it, MOB RULES sounds much more like the first three Dio solo albums from the early 80’s, so much so that it almost sounds like it could pass as a Rainbow, BLACK SABBATH, or even Dio record. But, at the end of the day, if you had to say, “THIS album sounds like BLACK SABBATH with Dio”, the only correct answer would be MOB RULES.
Always remember that the difference between “hot ranch and ‘the smell of’ hot ranch” is as vast as the difference between a “frenulum piercing” and a “frenum piercing”. It’s high time we “right the wrongs” from a few episodes back and get “up close, pretty front” in order to understand that “the gravy’s got no giblets in it” when you JOIN US as we celebrate the most Ronnie James Dio sounding BLACK SABBATH album in heavy metal history as we dive into MOB RULES.
