Andrew Bailey, CEO of the Mineral Exploration Cooperative Research Centre (MinEx CRC) joins us to discuss the objectives and projects. MinEx CRC is the world´s largest mineral exploration collaboration bringing together industry, government and research organizations backed by a total of $218M in funding. Andrew tells us about the organization and discusses MinEx CRC´s current initiatives and Education & Training program.
Project 1 Drilling Optimization:âWhat are we getting out of the ground in current drilling and what is the future of drilling?â This research program is built on a simple premise: that cheaper, more productive, safer and environmentally friendly drilling will lead to more meters drilled, which will deliver more discoveries and reduce the cost of developing those discoveries.
https://minexcrc.com.au/program-one-drilling-technologies/
Project 2 Data from DrillingThis program will develop technologies for capturing geochemical, petrophysical and seismic data either during drilling or within the drilling workflow. The program will also deliver software that will enable drilling data to be integrated into 3D geological models in real-time, delivering timely data to inform decisions on drill holes during drilling.
https://minexcrc.com.au/program-two-data-from-drilling/
Project 3 National Drilling InitiativeThe National Drilling Initiative (NDI) will manage and deliver drilling programs in multiple case study areas proposed by MinEx CRCâs partner geological survey organizations. The NDI vision is to drill multiple holes in a region to map the regional geology and architecture and define the potential for mineral systems in 3D.
https://minexcrc.com.au/program-three-national-drilling-initiative/
MinEx CRCâs Education & Training (E&T) program will have a critical role in the development of next-generation mineral exploration skills in PGR (postgraduate research) and Vocational Education and Training (VET) students.

On today´s Episode 6 we have Edine Bakker of the La Palma Research Centre in Spain talking about project VAMOS, the Viable Alternative Mine Operating System. VAMOS will enable access to mineral deposits and reserves in greater depths using a robotics system for clean, low visibility underwater mining with limited environmental impact. Currently unreachable mineral deposits will soon be accessible.
VAMOS is an EU-funded project that is developing equipment for underwater mining of inland deposits. It is a new method for safe, clean, and low-impact mining and has the potential to reopen abandoned mines, extend existing open-pit mines and open new mines, with the ultimate aim of reducing the EUâs reliance on mineral raw material imports.
Economical benefits:
Lower stripping ratio achievable: less waste materialNo need for dewateringPrimary crushing costs removed: material already crushed to <50 mmReadily road transportable modular systemCheaper alternative to underground conversionEnvironmental benefits:
No mine dustNo blasting vibrationsNo fleet operation noiseLower safety risksLower risk of spillageLower surface footprintNo aquifer draw-down and associated risks for adjacent wetlands or pastureLower energy usage:

Episode 3 – Mar. 6, 2018 PDAC 2018 Edition
Guest: Dr. Rolf Fandrich, CSIRO Reflexivity Group
From the CSIRO stand at PDAC 2018 Convention South Tradeshow floor in Toronto, Dr Fandrich shares CSIRO´s approach to innovation and the CSIRO Trust Model that characterizes the relationship between a community and the mining operation they live alongside. Using community surveys, the Reflexivity Group can deliver the top 5 things most important to a community and hence significantly improve understanding between company and community.
Dr. Fandrich also tells us about their experience of ON, CSIROâs (Australia´s national research provider) science and technology accelerator ( http://oninnovation.com.au ) and the Lean Launch Program, a tool to help researchers turn their discoveries into sustainable products and services that solve real world problems.
CSIRO´s Reflexivity Group developed a data service, called Reflexivity to provide community members with a way to be heard by the resource companies that work alongside them. It also helps companies understand what their communities think about them and why, providing tangible opportunities for building greater trust in those relationships.
Innovation: CSR
âCSIRO has developed a way to give communities a direct voice into companies that operate alongside them. Our approach enables a dynamic interaction between company and community that aims to increase understanding on all sides, build trust, and strengthen relationships. It builds upon knowledge gained from tens of thousands of community interactions in 9 countries and associated research over the past decade.
In 2017, Rio Tinto Iron Ore engaged CSIRO for a three-year project to apply the Reflexivity approach with communities in the Pilbara region in North Western Australia. The project is called Local Voices. Local Voices will provide the communities neighbouring Rio Tintoâs operations in the Pilbara a direct voice inside the company, and help the company engage with the issues that matter most to these communitiesâ.
