This is a preview of my upcoming review of the Lung Trainer, a familiar looking device with a heavy weight twist on how to help student musicians build proper breath support and control on their instrument. I saw this at the Midwest Clinic in December and bought one on the spot to use in my beginning band classroom.

The story of how people conceive of and create custom instruments for use by disabled musicians and students is a very inspiring one. I am working on a big story about it for an upcoming issue of Teaching Music but the interview I did today blew my mind to the point I had to talk a little bit about it right now while it was all fresh in my mind. NAfME's new standards for music education lend themselves to lots of creative projects and ways to assess student learning in the music classroom. The Model Cornerstone Assessments are NAfME's way to help guide teachers towards best practices and ways to assess that learning and serve as a guide for teachers to create their own. The MusiClock app for iOS is an easy to use way to start to learn a number of different musical scales. Switch keys quickly and improvise around those notes using the piano keyboard or the on screen dial. Check out this review to see all the features.

The Yamaha SILENT Brass system is a practice mute and belt pack combo that allows you to practice your brass instrument at full volume without disturbing those around you. At the same time though you can hear yourself playing as if the mute wasn't even there. It's a really cool piece of music technology and is available for all brass instruments from trumpet down to tuba.
