Jeff Rinehart, now a partner at venture capital impact firm City Light Capital, is a self-proclaimed linear thinker with a nonlinear career. From his 11-year tenure at Capital One, where he started as a statistician and ultimately oversaw the company's marketing strategy for the U.S. consumer credit card function. He then went on to join early-stage ed technology startup 2U as their chief marketing officer, and, two years after taking the company public, became a full-time professor at American University's business school. From there, he started advising companies and angel investing, which led him to City Light Capital—the lead investor on Teal's recent $6.3 million round of funding.
In this episode, Jeff touches on overcoming impostor syndrome, the power of lateral moves, how his background as a drummer led him to study economics, and why he's always been drawn to opportunities that challenge him and force him to grow.

Amanda Natividad, now the VP of Marketing at SparkToro, has always been a content creator of some kind, whether that meant writing short stories in kindergarten or setting out to be a journalist. After graduating from UCLA, Amanda’s career took an unexpected pivot in her mid-20s: she chose to attend culinary school—which then led her to become a test-kitchen cook and, ultimately, a content marketer. In this episode, Amanda opens up about feeling like college wasn’t for her at first; the quarter-life crisis that so many people struggle with; how to find work that’s energizing; how she leveraged her transferable skills to job search through cold outreach to companies; and how rejection really can be redirection.

Kristi Kennebrew's greatest mission in life is to help people land the dream jobs that they’ve always wanted—and now, as a talent sourcer at Microsoft and the founder of Get Me Hired Kristi, she's doing exactly that. A high school love of sports led Kristi to study sports management at the University of Texas, but after struggling with economics classes, she pivoted and went into health (kinesiology, specifically!) before taking a risk and applying for a post-graduation role in sales. After 2.5 years working in sales at Oracle, Kristi tapped into her transferable skills and, after persistently interviewing with Google, landed a contract role as a technical talent sourcer, which served as a springboard for her current role at Microsoft. In this episode, Kristi dives into the many lessons she's learned about career pivots, transferable skills, finding your passion, and reverse-engineering job descriptions to leverage your strengths.

In Jessi Sanfilippo’s life, the most important thing hasn't been worrying about a big, flashy award for her work, but rather, being herself through the process and learning from each new experience. In this episode, Jessi opens up about her first job in radio (inspired by her love of pop culture icons like the Backstreet Boys); balancing a career with raising a child; how being at home with her son enabled her to tap into her creativity; her “no regrets” mentality when it comes to her career; her “aha” moment while toasting a PopTart; and how forming a creative agency led to a role in event marketing, which then helped guide her to where she is today, working at the intersection of three of the things she's most passionate about: tech, connecting people, and live music.

Dayle Zielentino, Managing Director at Penny Deer, grew up in Newcastle, UK, intending to be an architect, but after graduating at the tail end of a recession, doubled down on his technical skills to land a job and found himself moving away from the future he'd imagined. From a transformational move to London to a series of career pivots that led him to where he is now in real estate development, Dayle's tapped into the power of networking (both in-person and virtually through Twitter), the growth that happens when you aren't afraid to ask questions and admit what you don't know, and the knowledge that it's never too late to switch gears.

Her next few years were a whirlwind, as she also worked with the New York Times and Facebook and transitioned from design to the tech world; she later started working as a design manager in a small design studio called Godfrey Dadich Partners. Originally from Minnesota, Jessica Peltz Zatulove moved to New York post-college and began her career doing media strategy for large brands like Gucci, Puma, 20th Century Fox, H&M, and Verizon. From 2014 to 2020, she worked at a corporate VC practice, investing in companies addressing the needs of a modern CMO, and then in 2020, using the professional experiences and connections she’d gathered up to that point, she and her business partner Kate Beardsley founded Hannah Grey VC, where they invest in pre-seed founders redefining everyday experiences. Follow along as Jessica recounts her career journey, all the way back to her entrepreneurial roots selling friendship bracelets and origami to her classmates in elementary school.

Lia Zneimer, now Head of Brand & Content Marketing at Teal, began her professional career in a totally different field. In college, she double majored in English and theater, then post-college she worked professionally in theater in New York. Through a great deal of self-reflection, she ended up stepping away from theater and moving toward something new—a complete 180° career shift. She found her way into public relations with Scholastic, and later stepped into a role assisting with social media responsibilities, due to the burgeoning new form of marketing social media was becoming at the time.
