The finalists for the New Zealand Book Awards for Children and Young Adults have been announced today. While the winners won't announced until August, it serves as a reminder of the incredible plethora of authors that spring from our shores. The books are spread across six categories: Picture Books, Junior Fiction, Young Adult Fiction, Non-Fiction, Illustration, and te reo Maori. Then there's the big one, the Margaret Mahy Book of the Year, where the winner will take home an $8,500. Taking us through the list of finalists books editor and our own book critic Claire Mabey.

On this day 80 years ago, in 1944, thousands of troops stormed five beaches in northern France - known forever as Utah, Omaha, Gold, Juno and Sword. Troops from across the world took part in the mission - codename Overlord - to combat Nazi Germany who controlled much of Europe at the time. Five of those troops - all New Zealanders - are featured in an Air Force Museum of New Zealand exhibtion which opens today in Christchurch. The stories highlight the role and experiences the men had in the event which changed the course of history Simon Moody is the Airforce Museum research creator, he speaks to Jesse.

International World Turtle Day was celebrated recently, a day to shellerbrate the magnificent turtles of the world and call attention to the many threats they face in our oceans. Turtles are threatened by plastic and chemical pollution in our oceans and human activity on land and water. You might not think we have turtles in Aotearoa, but five species frequent our waters. The honu, or leatherback sea turtle, is found worldwide and has been spotted as far south as Rakiura Stewart Island. Leatherbacks are impressive creatures, growing up to 2.7 m long and weighing about 500 kg.
