  • Addiction is often seen as an individual struggle, but what if we told you it's a family disease? In the latest episode of the Secret Life Podcast, host Brianne Davis-Gantt pulls back the curtain on the complex web of addiction, revealing how it affects not just the individual, but the entire family system. Addiction doesn't happen in a vacuum. The roles each family member plays can contribute to the creation and perpetuation of addictive behaviors. Whether it's enabling, codependency, or emotional incest, these dynamics can create a breeding ground for addiction. Brianne, with her years of experience in recovery and therapy, explains that healing must involve the entire family. It's about peeling back the layers and addressing the generational trauma that often lies at the root of addiction.

Brianne emphasizes the importance of setting boundaries and redefining roles to foster a healthier environment. It's not just about getting the addict sober; it's about rewiring the entire family system to support recovery and growth. One of the most powerful takeaways from the episode is the concept of autonomy within the family system. (30:00) The best thing with all my recovery, the 15 plus years of work, the mental health growth.

(35:00) When you look at your part and take accountability, it builds this inner strength.

(40:00) I don't get to then make people who I deal with sit in front of me and go, now it's your turn.

(45:00) The one thing we have control over is accountability for ourselves, not other people.

(50:00) When I take accountability, I feel like a stronger human being.

(55:00) Thank you for letting me record this podcast for my own journey.
