Jim Jones was an American cult leader who proclaimed to be the messiah of the Peoples Temple, a San Fransico based evangelist group. He promised his followers a utopia living in the Jungles of South America by way of an agricultural commune in Guyana known as Jonestown. Jones ultimately led his followers into a mass suicide on November 18, 1978, which left more than 900 dead and came to be known as the Jonestown Massacre. So, why did Jim Jones lead his flock to their untimely deaths?

Edward Gein also known as “The Butcher of Plainfield” or “The Plainfield Goul”, was an American murderer, suspected serial killer and body snatcher. He admitted to the murders of two women, Mary Hogan in 1954 and Bernice Worden in 1957, but was believed to be connected to several unsolved cases. Following Bernice Worden’s disappearance, police investigated Gein’s home and made a gruesome discovery. Inside his home police found he was keeping human organs inside of jars and had fashioned clothing and furniture out of human bones and body parts. But not only that, Gein readily admitted to digging up corpses to practice necrophilia and to make masks and suits out of human skin. His horrifying crimes inspired several fictional characters in horror movies like that of Norman Bates in Psycho, Leatherface in Texas Chain Saw Massacre and Buffalo Bill in The Silence of the Lambs. So, was Edward Gein’s born with a sinister mind or was he created into having one?

In 1996 the teen slasher film Scream hit the big screen and would later become a mega franchise. But did you know that the highly popular movie was inspired by actual events? Screenwriter Kevin Williamson was inspired to write the movie script about a knife-wielding killer after he had watched a documentary about the Gainesville Murders, in which Danny Rolling a.k.a. the Gainesville Ripper, murdered five University of Florida students over the course of four days. The victims had been fatally stabbed, and, in some cases, raped and mutilated, their bodies posed in sexual positions, and one was even found decapitated So, why did Danny Rolling go on a killing spree that would terrify the whole nation and was he born a sinister killer or made into one?

Hollywood has been terrifying audiences for decades with horror and thriller films ranging from Alfred Hitchcock’s The Birds to the 2013 paranormal movie The Conjuring. But what’s even more frightening than these Hollywood movies is that a variety of real-life crimes and events were the actual inspiration for many filmmakers and screenwriters of this genre. One such film was Bryan Bertino’s 2008 film The Strangers, which starred Scott Speedman and Liv Tyler, that recounted a story of a terrifying home invasion. The film was inspired by real-life crimes, which included the murders committed by the Mason Family and the 1981 Keddie Cabin Murders, in which four people were killed by unknown assailants in a Northern California resort town. What occurred in Cabin 28 instantly became one of the most morbid scenes in modern American crime history — and has come to be known as the Keddie Murders. To this day the crime remains unsolved. So, what really happened and who were the killers.

One of Japan’s most disturbing and sinister killers was a man named Tsutomu Miyazaki, who earned the nickname "Human Dracula" because he was born with deformed fingers and hands, like that that of the fictional character. Between 1988 and 1989 Miyazaki terrorized the city of Tokyo by committing horrific crimes against four young girls which included kidnapping, assault, murder, mutilation, necrophile and cannibalism becoming known as "The Little Girl Murders." Miyazaki also brutally taunted the families of his victims. So, what would cause someone to take such a sinister turn and commit such unspeakable acts against children.

Utah mother of three, Kouri Richins wrote a children’s book about grief almost a year after her husband Eric Richins passed away in March of 2022. She wrote the book as she wanted to help kids struggling with the loss of a loved one like her own children had. However, a month after her book was published and receiving praise from the local media for helping children deal with their grief, Kouri’s story took a sinister turn, and she was charged with the murder of her husband by poisoning him with a lethal dose of fentanyl. So, what makes one kill their spouse?
