New Year's EveSilently, the day passes over - taking the year with the setting sun.Dark clouds push pains away;tears aren't needed this time.Muddy sponge fields splashwith every step. The new year only hours away, lays the old one to rest, cherishes surprises, learnings, insights.Healing ships sailed to better lands, lush nature throve forward, again and again like the sun rising each morning.Sailing rough seas on our raftswe float down the river of life, the fire slowly fadingbeneath that endless spacefilled with stars ready to be -discovered.Maybe, it will be youwho catches my eye.

Poetic Edge: Flash Fiction Fun with Aisling Edge was an enjoyable session. Aisling provided the group with words to be used in either a 100-word drabble flash fiction or a 50-word dribble flash fiction. I wrote four pieces. ‘Still Alive’ is one of them.
Prompt: Write a 100-word drabble flash fiction piece using the following words: Tree, Brick, Cold, Glue, and Bark.
Give it a try and share it in the comments if you like. I would love to read your piece.
Here is mine:

Initial reflections after reading Anton Chekhov's short story 'The Lottery Ticket'
Reading is one of the greatest portals into the writing world. I only recently started reading stories more than once and reflect on them more thoroughly. This and reading from a writer’s point of view have made me find gems in so many stories and poems. There are certainly many gems in this short story by Anton Chekhov. But I leave it to you to find the ones that resonate with you. Why don’t you read ‘The Lottery Ticket’ and let share what gems you have found?

This offspring came from a writing prompt by a fellow writer after discussing Claire Keegan’s Short Story 'So Late in the Day' in our writing group. The homework was to write a short prose from Cynthia's perspective.
The Short Story has been published in The New Yorker in the February 28, 2022 Issue and is available here.
