  • Jake Elliott Glibbery spent most of his life in unusual relationship with circadian rhythm, light and wake/sleep cycle. Having previously worked in finance for over 10 years, that exacerbated sleep issues, burning the candle at both ends and struggling to adapt body to a “9-5” schedule.

  • Welcome back to Tackling Minds, Series 2 called “Sup, Man”.

    This series is dedicated to advocating mental muscle and emotional intelligence FOR men.

    For those of you who are new to Tackling Minds and wondering why am I, as woman, doing this FOR men. Well, if you already think that I have manipulating, insincere motives other than the work for humanity, then, this podcast is MOST CERTAINLY, for you.

    I believe we are more than our gender-based issues, that we, as humans are more similar than we are different in emotional needs like care, safety, desire, respect and also in feeling safe to SHOW love, to SHOW care, without the worry of being labelled as “intense” “too much” or the big one for guys, labelled as “sensitive” in a negative tone.

    Until we’re able to whole heartedly move forward and build forward as a unit of amazing humans, there ARE gender-biased issues to address.

    Personally, men’s work goes beyond altruism. It pains me to see the men in my life struggle with long-standing patriarchal practices - yes, blind patriarchy is crushing for men too. When I really thought about it, I realised that it is equal opportunities and equal choices that many of us really appreciate, regardless of gender.

    You’re a woman and CHOOSE to want to raise your kids full time without the distraction of thinking you need to keep up a career and without being condemned by other people who think you’re a "JUST A STAY AT HOME MOM"? YES!

    You’re a man and CHOOSE to want to raise your kids full time without the distraction of thinking you need to keep up a career and without being condemned by other people who think you’re a "JUST A STAY AT HOME DAD"? YES!

    That is just one example of how it’s having the CHOICE that matters, and for us, within the social circles, to be supportive of our friends and families. Too many people are doing things that feel wrong to them purely because they think they would be disappointing parents, partners or anyone else they feel pressured to be a certain way that isn’t true to them being their full selves.

    There are definitely more significant ways to push forward in this kind of work, I only hope that my small contribution here on this podcast is enough to spark conversations. Conversations that are catalysts for shifting perspectives that lead to change, no matter how small those changes are. It’s the small changes that amount to a big impact.

    So, enjoy this series where I invite men on the show for potentially uncomfortable but important topics. The men on the show are already coaches themselves who work with other men in the mental health space, in health and wellness, in education and/or are in leadership roles at work and at home.

  • Today’s conversation is with Kay Kay Keung.

    Kay Kay is a director for the Hong Kong Powerlifting Federation (HKPF). This Lululemon Hong Kong ambassador coaches powerlifting and weightlifting, as well as competes in the two sports. As a competitive athlete who swims, runs and plays lacrosse, Kay Kay emphasizes the strength to size ratio as the quality of body performance in relation to physical size. A mission she has been successfully carrying out through her endeavors such as co-founding Trybe in Hong Kong.

    In an interview with South China Morning Post, Kay Kay said “Before it was hard for me to convince women it’s possible to work towards a pull-up [an exercise in which you hold onto a bar above your head and pull your body up until your chin is above the bar]. Now I’m teaching women to do a muscle-up [an exercise to strengthen the arms and upper body, lifting one’s own weight while hanging from a bar to a position above the bar]. I am seeing more goals like that, rather than just wanting to lose weight. That’s a change I really enjoy seeing,”

    In this episode, Kay Kay shares how she manages rotating between coaching her competitive athletes and competing herself, managing different physical skills all at the same time, organized and competed at the hardest event in her competing experience, women in weightlifting and powerlifting, and the interesting dynamic between her and her fiancé (now husband) where she’s his coach.

  • Today’s conversation is with Bruninho Barbosa. Bruno is a household name within the Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu community in Malaysia and made his mark in Asia through coaching and competing as a black belt. To name a few accolades: 1st Place Masters International Asia IBJJF 2019, 1st Place Copa De Malaysia XIII, 1st Place in the Tokyo Open IBJJF 2 years running & The Manila Open 3 years running. Growing up in the favelas in Brazil, Bruno was a big fan of martial arts and sports in general, with the first few disciplines being kung-fu and aikido before BJJ in 1999.

    In this episode, Bruno shares a little about his family history and appreciation for life at a young age, what BJJ was associated with back in the day, developing the ability to shift mental states while reframing perspectives, dealing with the constant struggle of confidence and finding ways to develop a powerful mind, learning English only upon moving to Malaysia, how being a coach helps him evolve and connect with different types of people and his belief in using his influence to spread positive thinking.

    一开始学习 中华民族传统舞蹈,也曾代表马来西亚到中国参加 民族舞世界公开赛,也多次跟海外舞蹈团交流。直到25岁的时候,她开始接触更多的舞种,参演了各种各样的舞展,以致在五年后遇到了Viva Vertical,开启了另一种为艺术献身的使命。

    她退居幕后,开始投入到舞展的创作与导演的工作上,之后与多位资深舞蹈家一起打造了Cre Arts Asia,成功实现马来西亚首个马戏团舞展。

    身为Cre Arts Asia的监制,她永远都不满于现状,因此在MCO期间,她还考获了Bungee Workout 的教练执照,目前在Viva Vertical有开班授课,

    真是一个累不死的嫁给了艺术的女人。

He has traveled the world learning from industry leaders in personal training, exercise biomechanics, stretch therapy, and a lot more - and is currently the Education Manager at ATP Fitness, between Hong Kong and Singapore.

    Having been diagnosed with Type-1 diabetes at age fourteen, this BJJ athlete has had his share of health challenges. The experiences of trial and error in managing that further drives his pursuit of quality education. In recent years, he found that the carnivore diet drastically improved his health conditions, including mental wellness.

    In this episode, Jay shares in detail about his health journey before leading a carnivore diet life and how that helps him manage his diabetes, how mental health is related to how the body feels, his perspective on men’s mental health, dating, and sex, a deeper dive into inflammation, sustainable change and recovery as part of a successful transformation project, modalities for education and his mission to elevate the standards of coaching.
