Kris talks about the new podcast Can You Dig It? with narrator Chuck D of Public Enemy, along with both producers to discover the untold origins of Hip Hop. The story is told through a blend of immersive reenactments, oral history and expert discussion, Can You Dig It? is as illuminating for hip-hop fans as it is for history buffs, as one of the great American stories.
About the Can You Dig It? Podcast:
How did hip-hop happen? To understand that, we have to go back to before the âbirthâ of the culture.
It wasnât a given that the Bronx of the late 1960s and early 1970s would be the birthplace of an American art form. Urban renewal had left the borough neglected and in crisis. Gangs policed the streets, and winding up in the wrong territory could have serious consequences. But things were about to change.
Can You Dig It? is an in-depth history of how positive community influences helped inspire the troubled youth to end the cycle of gang violence, as told by people who were there at the time. Itâs the inspiring true story of how local gang the Ghetto Brothers rejected calls for war in the aftermath of the murder of Black Benjieâa member who was trying to find common groundâand how gang leaders Yellow Benjy and Karate Charlie worked to broker a peace with rivals. The end result? A place where urban artistry could flourish into a global culture fifty years strong: hip-hop.
Narrated by Public Enemyâs Chuck D and told through a blend of immersive reenactments, oral history and expert discussion, Can You Dig It? is as illuminating for hip-hop fans as it is for history buffs, as one of the great American stories. Itâs a tribute not just to community action but to the unsung heroes who paved the way for greatness.

As Kris & Producer Char prepare for the next round of new TPR Tracks, they've decided to share some of their favorites that newer listeners might not had a chance to listen to yet... on this first encore, they look back to when they first piloted the podcast, just as the pandemic was about to begin.
Liner Notes:
Kris is honored to welcome her first guest, longtime friend and former co-worker, Matt Pinfield!
If you watched MTV in the mid 90's you know Matt Pinfield as the host of the seminal alternative music series, 120 Minutes.
Matt knew everything about music because to hear him tell it - he's a music fan first and foremost. That hasn't changed. Matt is as genuine today as he was when Kris met him 25 years ago.
So when it came time to choose the first guest for this podcast, Matt was the obvious choice. The night this podcast was recorded, it had been a long time since Kris & Matt had seen each other. They had so much to cover and little time to do it... what became of the Track was an honest and frank conversation about Matt's life in music, which he recently chronicled in his book, All These Things That I've Done: My Insane, Improbable Rock Life.
Check out Matt's book, now available on paperback!

For more on Richard Hell, you can visit his official website.
More about Richard Hell:
Richard Hell is an American singer, songwriter, bass guitarist and writer.
Hell was in several important, early punk bands, including Neon Boys, Television and The Heartbreakers, after which he formed Richard Hell & the Voidoids. Their 1977 album Blank Generation influenced many other punk bands. LINER NOTES:
Kris sits down with filmmakers Paul Sng & Celeste Bell to talk about their film Poly Styrene: I Am A Cliche, a documentary about Celeste's Mom, Poly Styrene.
Poly Styrene: I Am A Cliche releases in theaters this week, then will be available on demand beginning February 4!
For more on the film and to keep up to date on Celest and Paul, visit the website.
Follow the film on Social Media: @PolyStyreneFilm on Twitter & Instagram.
About the film:
Poly Styrene was the first woman of color in the UK to front a successful rock band. She introduced the world to a new sound of rebellion, using her unconventional voice to sing about identity, consumerism, postmodernism, and everything she saw unfolding in late 1970s Britain, with a rare prescience. As the frontwoman of X-Ray Spex, the Anglo-Somali punk musician was also a key inspiration for the riot grrrl and Afropunk movements. But the late punk maverick didnât just leave behind an immense cultural footprint.
Poly was survived by a daughter, Celeste Bell. Celeste became the unwitting guardian of her motherâs legacy and her motherâs demons. Misogyny, racism, and mental illness plagued Polyâs life, while their lasting trauma scarred Celesteâs childhood and the pairâs relationship.
Featuring unseen archive material and rare diary entries narrated by Oscar-nominee Ruth Negga, this documentary follows Celeste as she examines her mother's unopened artistic archive and traverses three continents to better understand Poly the icon and Poly the mother.

LINER NOTES:
This week, Kris chats with Andy Murnane & Brotha D, and they discuss their untold story of acclaimed New Zealand music label Dawn Raid Entertainment.
About the film:
Dawn Raid is the story of two Manukau Polytechnic students, Andy Murane and Tanielu Leaosavai'i (aka Brotha D) who turned a bootleg t-shirt business and Hip-Hop night at a local bar in Otara into the influential Dawn Raid Entertainment empire. From humble beginnings to fame and fortune, Andy, Brotha D and the Dawn Raid artists gave voice to a disenfranchised Pacific community, for which the violence of the dawn raids, twenty years previously, was still raw. But the bravado and contempt for the status quo that drove Andy and Brotha D to the top, was also the unravelling of their empire. Unpaid tax debts, rifts between artists, and a feeling of betrayal and failure underpinned the downfall of Dawn Raid Entertainment, though not before they had created an immeasurable musical legacy that would pave the way for future New Zealand artists to reach international audiences.

LINER NOTES:
Happy New Year!
Welcome as we kick off another year of tracks of TPR... This week, Kris debuts 2022 with a conversation with author Dan Ozzi to talk about punk rock and his book, Sellout: The Major-Label Feeding Frenzy That Swept Punk, Emo, and Hardcore (1994â2007)
About the book:
A raucous history of punk, emo, and hardcoreâs growing pains during the commercial boom of the early 90s and mid-aughts, following eleven bands as they âsell outâ and find mainstream fame, or break beneath the weight of it all
Punk rock found itself at a crossroads in the mid-90âs. After indie favorite Nirvana catapulted into the mainstream with its unexpected phenomenon, Nevermind, rebellion was suddenly en vogue. Looking to replicate the bandâs success, major record labels set their sights on the underground, and began courting punkâs rising stars. But the DIY punk scene, which had long prided itself on its trademark authenticity and anti-establishment ethos, wasnât quite ready to let their homegrown acts go without a fight. The result was a schism: those who accepted the cash flow of the majors, and those who defiantly clung to their indie cred.
In Sellout, seasoned music writer Dan Ozzi chronicles this embattled era in punk. Focusing on eleven prominent bands who made the jump from indie to major, Sellout charts the twists and turns of the last âgold rushâ of the music industry, where some groups âsold outâ and rose to surprise super stardom, while others buckled under mounting pressures. Sellout is both a gripping history of the music industryâs evolution, and a punk rock loverâs guide to the chaotic darlings of the post-grunge era, featuring original interviews and personal stories from members of modern punkâs most (in)famous bandsFor more from Dan and SELLOUT - visit his website.

LINER NOTES:
On this track, Kris sits down with classic, 70's LA based punk band, Backstage Pass, to discuss a new documentary short brought to you by Dr. Martens, Women in Punk LA.
Check the documentary HERE.
More about Backstage Pass:
Backstage Pass was a mostly-female American punk-pop band from Los Angeles. The band was formed in 1976, and is known as one of the cityâs earliest punk bands. They are also recognized for helping to build and launch Hollywoodâs most iconic punk venue, The Masque.
Marina Del Rey (Marina Muhlfriedel) started the band on a whim with bassist Joanna Spock Dean. Before they ever played a note, Backstage Pass was announced in Britainâs âMelody Makerâ and âSoundsâ music newspapers, and in Rodney Bingenheimerâs âPhonograph Record Magazineâ column. Genny Body (Genny Schorr), ChĂ© Zuro, and Barrakuda Majors (Holly Beth Vincent) were other key members of the group. There were several incarnations of the band, all comprised of female musicians, except for an assortment of male drummers. Drummer Rod âThe Perveâ Mitchell played with Backstage Pass longer than any other drummer. Mike Ruiz from Milk nâ Cookies also performed in various lineups.
The band spent its first months rehearsing at Cherokee Studios in a room with a one-way mirror, through which Alice Cooper, David Bowie and others would watch them try to figure out their instruments. Their relationship to Stiff Records founder Jake Riviera, Elvis Costello, and British punk band The Damned coaxed them out of the rehearsal room and onto the stage. They played extensively in Southern and Northern California on bills with Devo, The Mumps, Wall of Voodoo, The Nuns, Elvis Costello (opening his first US tour!), The Screamers, The Weirdos and others. Backstage Pass was often featured in seminal punk publications including âBackdoor Man,â âSlash Magazine,â âFlipsideâ and others, photographed by notable rock photographers including Jenny Lens, Brad Elterman, Donna Santisi and James Stark.
